I sent a #ThoughtProvoker contrasting Opt-in vs. Opt-out for services that developers launch on our #fediverse.

Thought was that on a #Prosocial web people are fully in control of the services they want to use by opting in, thus providing #consent.

Opt-out is where in many cases de-facto a developer becomes the decider how your content and data is used. To fedizens its often unclear what services interact with their online presence, and in what way. Plus they have to discover the opt-out mechanisms themselves.

My post got an angry reaction from a #fedi developer, who misinterpreted what I said. The devs I know act with the best intentions! Yet some are exasperated with "We can't have nice things with only opt-in".

Recently a discovery service was launched with opt-out based on Indexable flag and Bio tags.
