  1. 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿🚍💷 The #Scottish Government has outlined plans to expand its £2 bus fare cap across #Scotland as part of efforts to help with the cost of living. Speaking during a debate on affordable bus fares, #Economy, #Tourism and #Transport Secretary Stephen Flynn said work is under way to extend the scheme beyond the current Highlands and Islands pilot, with an initial rollout planned in the #Strathclyde region.

The #government says its long-term aim is to introduce a nationwide £2 fare cap, making bus travel more affordable and encouraging greater use of public transport. Flynn said the measure builds on wider support, including the removal of peak rail fares and more than £530 million in funding for bus services and concessionary travel in 2026-27. He also highlighted the success of free bus travel for under-22s, which has recorded more than 300 million journeys since its introduction.

  3. 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿🚇⌚ #Strathclyde Partnership for #Transport (SPT) will consider extending #Subway operating hours following its modernisation, including new platform screen doors and unattended train operation. The proposal faces a committee meeting this week.
Under the plan, Monday–Thursday timings remain 06:30–23:30. Friday and Saturday services would run until 00:30, roughly an hour later than at present. Sunday services would see the biggest change, running 06:30–23:30—starting 3.5 hours earlier and finishing 5.5 hours later than the current timetable.
SPT states this responds to long-standing demand for better Sunday connectivity. The plan accounts for maintenance and staffing, with union discussions underway regarding revised shifts for station, driving, and engineering teams. A two-year review is proposed to monitor passenger demand and costs, ensuring the extended service remains safe and financially sustainable.spt.co.uk/about-us/news/propos

  5. The #Strathclyde Partnership for #Transport (SPT) has approved the Strathclyde Regional Bus Strategy (SRBS) and action plan, including plans to introduce bus franchising across the region. This follows strong public backing during a consultation earlier in the year, with 83% in favour. The strategy focuses on better infrastructure, affordable fares, reliability, safety, and sustainability. Respondents highlighted the need for more accessible and integrated services. SPT leaders stressed the importance of better bus links for disadvantaged communities in west #Scotland and tackling the climate emergency. A costed programme and timeline for a Franchise Framework Assessment, required by the Transport (Scotland) Act 2019, will be developed and presented in December 2025.

  6. The #Strathclyde Regional Bus Strategy aims to improve the bus network in the west of #Scotland, where bus use has been declining. Bus services connect people to essential destinations and play a role in addressing issues like climate change, inequality, and social isolation. SPT is consulting on a draft strategy to enhance bus services, focusing on better #accessibility, frequency, and coverage.

A consultation on the draft strategy is open, with reports and background assessments available for review. The process includes feedback from an Options Appraisal, which will help identify the best operational model for the region’s bus services. The consultation period will end on 29th May 2025.

  7. Switching gears, I'm a big fan of Single Grain Scotch. I think it is criminally overlooked, in favor of Single Malt. Hunter Hamilton bottles some great single grain expressions under their The Clan Denny label. Recent auction deliveries brought me three more.

A nine-year from Strathclyde, a 42-year from Lochside, and a 45-year from Cambus. Lochside is a closed distillery. It was closed in 1992 and demolished in 2004. Cambus was also mothballed in 1993 by Diageo.

  18. @pre Objection: •England• is too dysfunctional to do this. #Scotland has been reopening and electrifying railway lines near continuously since 2010 (and, in #Strathclyde, on a fairly regular basis before that). #Wales is also making good progress.

If instead we had started #HS2 from Edinburgh/Glasgow, we would probably have reached Manchester, Newcastle and Leeds by now, and on the way to Birmingham, w/ enough built momentum to make the expensive stretch to London then a certainty.

  20. #EnergyTransition #Postdoc alert! Come and work with me as part of a great team at #Strathclyde University. We are looking at storing heat in flooded abandoned mine shafts. Aqueous #Geochemistry background preferred. Closing date 19th June. Happy to chat informally about the job. Please share. tinyurl.com/STEAM-Job

  21. Today's additions.

The Casa Del Sol Tequila Angel's Reserve Anejo I blame on Friski Whiski for suggesting I try it. (BTW, cognac! I knew it had a finish.) The Xicaru Mezcal Reposado is a new barrel pick from Julio's Liquors & Firefly's BBQ. I picked up both from Julio's today after the Tequila & Rosé event.

The rest came in from Whisky Hammer. A couple of nice old Compass Box bottles from 2010 - Flaming Heart and Hedonism H39MMXB. The Clan Denny 23 year old Single Cask Single Grain Scotch Whisky distilled at the Strathclyde Distillery in 1998 - I have the 50 year and want to compare. A 17 year Westport (Glenmorangie in a clever disguise) bottled by The Creative Whisky Co.

And last, but not least, a Long Pond 2019 three year Jamaican Pure Single Rum from Habitation Velier.

  23. Spent a productive afternoon working on my #strathclyde #PGCert #coursework (due Monday, eek) and learning about the lovely #wiltshire #parish of #SteepleLangford. Really enjoying learning about new people, places and research techniques!

  24. Today is my day off from #academia, aka my day for #FamilyHistory and #LocalHistory research. Lots of projects on the go, including assignments for #strathclyde #pgcert in #genealogy and writing #HouseHistory of my 290-year-old #warwickshire village house … but am mostly mulling a #OnePlaceStudy of the lost hamlet where the house stands, which was absorbed into the larger village by end of C19. I collected this data from the 1841 tithe map and census years ago & wd love to put it to use!

  25. @ScottishGENES we should talk a little bit more about this, because it would be helpful for my #Strathclyde project on the English church in Amsterdam. #ERCAmsterdam

  26. Working on #genealogy quizzes for the #Strathclyde program. One quiz is about the 1880/1881 #census records for England/Wales, the United States and Canada. Have you ever studied the enumerator's instructions?

  27. After four days in #Glasgow, it is now time to return to the Netherlands. It has been a nice trip, visiting the city and attending the #Strathclyde student event. Home in a few hours.

  28. No pictures of today’s classes at the #Strathclyde student event. But I just want to emphasize how much I enjoyed the workshop ‘Listening Skills’ by Pam Dawson. A workshop like this (dealing with difficult situations, bringing bad news, handling emotions) is absolutely essential for everyone working (professionally) in the #genealogy field.

  29. First day of the #Strathclyde student event, with a visit to the Glasgow Archives, talks about the development of #genealogy into an academic discipline and the many avenues a genealogist can choose from. Finally got to meet @ScottishGENES !

  30. At yesterday’s meeting the directors of the Register of Qualified Genealogists announced that following recent nominations Helen Tovey and I would be student representatives for the coming year, starting now.

This is an exciting time for #RQG as there has been quite an increase in student numbers over the past few years: of the 269 RQG members, 106 are student members.

As a student myself (enrolled in the #Strathclyde program) I am pleased and excited with this new position! #genealogy
