In May I discovered a new-to-me auction site, Fine Spirits Auction in France, and by lucky happenstance the first auction running had a Glenmorangie unicorn that I'd been hunting for years: Chateau de Meursault Wood Finish 12 year. It is Finished in Premier Cru White Burgundy Casks for two years after ten years in American Oak (almost certainly ex-bourbon).
I've only seen this come up on an auction site once before, in February, and bidding went to over 825GBP, before fees. That was crazy high and clearly someone really wanted it more than I did.
I was afraid I'd missed my chance, as the previous listing I found for it was in 2020, and the one before that was 2016. I wasn't sure I'd have another shot, but I made myself walk away at that price.
I'm glad I lost it, as I got this one for 208.60 EUR, including fees! That's actually less than it sold for six years ago. Even after factoring in shipping one bottle from France (which wasn't all that bad actually), it was a massive savings. Probably a quarter the total cost. Sometimes things work out in the end! 😁

Tonight's Whisk(e) Wednesday at Julio's Liquors was all about America’s 250th Anniversary Offerings. We sampled eight offerings from different bottlers, but the ones that came home with me are three special bourbons from Lost Lantern Whiskey.
First up is the United States of Bourbon 1776 Special Edition 250th Anniversary. This is a blend of straight bourbon whiskies from the first 13 states - aka the 13 colonies. It is limited to 1776 bottles and comes in at 60.7% ABV. I think this one might be my favorite.
Next is the United States of Bourbon 100 Proof, Edition 1. This is a blend of straight bourbon whiskies from all 50 states. As far as I know, that's never been done before. It's 50% ABV, of course.
Last, but not least, is the United States of Bourbon Cask Strength, Edition 1. This is also a blend of straight bourbon whiskies from all 50 states - in fact, the same blend as the previous bottle, just at Cask strength, 61.5% ABV in this case.
I'm not normally one who cares too much about proof. I mostly prefer things to be above 46% and non-chill filtered, but I find a lot of cask strength whisky has more flavor with a little water added. But this is an exception.
While they're both good, I prefer the cask strength bottling. While it is the same blend, it has a depth and complexity of flavor beyond that of the 100 Proof.
Lost Lantern includes a list of all the distilleries on the back of the bottle, but they go beyond that on their website. Not only do they list the distilleries, but they include the age, mash bill, and any other information they could, such as barrel size. They're very transparent about what they bottle.

It's something special which, to my knowledge, has never been done before. These were a multi-year labor of love by the folks at Lost Lattern, and they've created something truly unique and special. This isn't just a red, white, and blue label slapped on a standard offering.
I also picked up my pre-ordered Copper & Cask 'B.B. Queen' Straight Bourbon Whiskey Finished in a Honey Barrel. This is a Blanton's pick barrel that was used to barrel age honey after the Blanton's was bottled. After the honey was removed the barrel was refilled with MGP bourbon. Then the barrel was sent to age in the Texas heat. With six years of total age and an ABV of 58.6%, this bourbon has a strong, but not cloying or unpleasant, scent and taste of honey.
While supplies last, the B.B. Queen includes a small bottle of the honey that had been aged in the cask.
All in all, a good night.

Next is the United States of Bourbon 100 Proof, Edition 1. This is a blend of straight bourbon whiskies from all 50 states. As far as I know, that's never been done before. It's 50% ABV, of course.
Last, but not least, is the United States of Bourbon Cask Strength, Edition 1. This is also a blend of straight bourbon whiskies from all 50 states - in fact, the same blend as the previous bottle, just at Cask strength, 61.5% ABV in this case.
I'm not normally one who cares too much about proof. I mostly prefer things to be above 46% and non-chill filtered, but I find a lot of cask strength whisky has more flavor with a little water added. But this is an exception.
While they're both good, I prefer the cask strength bottling. While it is the same blend, it has a depth and complexity of flavor beyond that of the 100 Proof.
Lost Lantern includes a list of all the distilleries on the back of the bottle, but they go beyond that on their website. Not only do they list the distilleries, but they include the age, mash bill, and any other information they could, such as barrel size. They're very transparent about what they bottle.

These are selling fast and supplies are limited. Julio's has open bottles to try before you buy, but I think the set is worth picking up. It's something special which, to my knowledge, has never been done before. While they left the door open to another edition of the 50 states bottles (Edition 1), the 1776 states 'never to be repeated'.
These were a multi-year labor of love by the folks at Lost Lattern, and they've created something truly unique and special. This isn't just a red, white, and blue label slapped on a standard offering.
I also picked up my pre-ordered Copper & Cask 'B.B. Queen' Straight Bourbon Whiskey Finished in a Honey Barrel. This is a Blanton's pick barrel that was used to barrel age honey after the Blanton's was bottled. After the honey was removed the barrel was refilled with MGP bourbon. Then the barrel was sent to age in the Texas heat. With six years of total age and an ABV of 58.6%, this bourbon has a strong, but not cloying or unpleasant, scent and taste of honey.
While supplies last, the B.B. Queen includes a small bottle of the honey that had been aged in the cask.

I picked this up as my friend Marc is the distiller at our local Nashoba Valley Spirits, and creator of their own tea-infused bourbon and single malt whisky. So when I saw this I wanted to compare a tea-infused rye. I have to say, the tea influence is very faint here. It isn't a bad pour, but I don't think I'd guess there was tea if I didn't know. I prefer our local offerings.
And then yesterday another box showed up from the UK with a very special rum. Black Tot Rum Rare Old Natural Cask Strength Demerara Rum, Aged 40 Years. This is Demerara Rum distilled in Guyana in 1975, and was the heart of the blended rum served by the Royal Navy until 1970. It will be interesting to compare this with The Last Consignment.
