Amazon LEO D2C service is looking to put ~5,100 satellites into orbit with deployment starting in 2028.

On Sat. July 24/2026 (interesting) Amazon filed an FCC Form 312 Application for Satellite Space Station Authorizations for "Amazon Leo D2D System" described as "Mobile-Satellite Service, 1.6/2.4 GHz Mobile-Satellite Service, Fixed-Satellite Service" using the following radio frequency bands:
24c. L-Band (1-2 GHz)
24d. S-Band (2-3 GHz
24h. Ka-Band (17-30 GHz)
24i. Q/V-Band (35-75 GHz)

The #ALMA survey to Resolve exoKuiper belt Substructures (ARKS), has produced the sharpest images ever of 24 debris discs, the dusty belts left after #planets finish forming.

These discs are the cosmic equivalent of the teenage years for planetary systems – somewhat more mature than newborn, planet-forming discs, but not yet settled into adulthood.

Debris discs are representing the collision-dominated phase of the #planet formation process.

With ALMA, astronomers are able to characterise the disc structures pointing to the presence of planets. In parallel, with direct imaging and radial velocity studies, searches for young planets in these systems is possible.

Solar System’s counterpart to this phase is the #Kuiper Belt, a ring of icy debris beyond #Neptune that preserves a record of massive collisions and planetary migrations from billions of years ago.

By studying 24 exoplanetary debris belts, the ARKS team has opened a window into what our Solar System went through as the Moon was forming and as planets jostled for their final places, and sometimes trading orbits.

Ob sich die Internetanbieter via #Satelliten Gedanken um unsere #Atmosphäre machen?

Die aktuell mehr als 10.000 Satelliten, welche sich dafür in einem erdnahen Orbit bewegen, sind auf Verschleiß konzipiert. Das heißt sie haben nur eine begrenzte Lebensdauer und werden nach Ablauf dieser ersetzt. Jedes Jahr werden deshalb hunderte dieser Satelliten in der Erdatmosphäre verglühen. Sie bestehen aus seltenen Metallegierungen und viel Aluminium (ein eher reaktionsfreudiges Element). Die Anbieter wollen mit noch mehr Satelliten ihre Abdeckung verbessern, geplant seien mehr als 40.000 Satelliten im Orbit.
Untersuchungen, was die in die Atmosphäre eingebrachten Stoffe bewirken, scheint es bisher kaum zu geben. Immerhin gibt es erste Artikel, die am Rande auf das Problem eingehen.
