  9. With our focus on #HouseHistories this #OnePlaceWednesday, here's a link to a recording of one of our past #OnePlaceStudy webinars for members back in 2020, when house historian Melanie Backe-Hansen treated us to a great presentation all about UK #HouseHistory: youtube.com/watch?v=FP3_Fib1sq

  10. A number of our member-registered #OnePlaceStudies are #HouseHistories. The sources and techniques used for a #HouseHistory can be applied to a #StreetStudy or a wider #OnePlaceStudy, although it may not be feasible for the individual houses in larger studies to be researched in the same depth. #OnePlaceWednesday

  11. In the UK, interest in #HouseHistory research has been given a boost in recent years by the BBC series A House Through Time.

Clips, and episodes available on iPlayer, can be viewed on the BBC website: bbc.co.uk/programmes/b09l64y9.

There is also a book, by David Olusoga and Melanie Backe-Hansen: uk.bookshop.org/p/books/a-hous

  14. RT @2avsagas: I'm always amazed how few cars there are in all these photos from 4-5 decades ago. It's a choice to let private cars dictate city street policy and one made in the not-so-distant past.

  18. Every house in a community, regardless of size or expense, can tell us a story about its past inhabitants and their lives. This modest brick home in New Philadelphia, Ohio includes stories of a beloved community member and family tragedies.

  19. This house on North Broadway in New Philadelphia, Ohio has amazing details that give it the classic “haunted house” vibe. No ghost story, but this is the story of the family who built it over 130 years ago.

Big thank you to Kim at the Tuscarawas County Historical Society for an image!

  21. Today is my day off from #academia, aka my day for #FamilyHistory and #LocalHistory research. Lots of projects on the go, including assignments for #strathclyde #pgcert in #genealogy and writing #HouseHistory of my 290-year-old #warwickshire village house … but am mostly mulling a #OnePlaceStudy of the lost hamlet where the house stands, which was absorbed into the larger village by end of C19. I collected this data from the 1841 tithe map and census years ago & wd love to put it to use!

  22. A street of colourful houses. Did the people who lived in them lead colourful lives? A #HouseHistory or #StreetStudy project makes for an enjoyable and very manageable #OnePlaceStudy and could help you discover more about the place you live in, a place you love, or a place that was important to some of your ancestors.

    #OnePlaceStudies, where #FamilyHistory and #LocalHistory unite.

  23. A #OnePlaceStudy can be of a single building, such as a house. Other buildings can be the subjects of #OnePlaceStudies too - institutions for example, or commercial premises. If there are records available which you can use to research the history of the building and its people, it can be an OPS.

Here's a fascinating single-building OPS, conducted by our member Denise Whalley: Eton College Boathouse 20 one-place-studies.org/europe/e
