Recently, a Glenmorangie Rare Cask that I've been hunting for came up at a Bonhams Skinner auction. The catch was, it was in Hong Kong.
Which made sense as Cask 6872 is "Hand Selected By Dr. Bill Lumsden for MH Private Hong Kong." There was another catch, which is that there were four bottles in the auction - but as two lots of two. So now I have two - I'll try to find another local Glenmo fan who would want one, and is willing to pay, as these came pretty dear.
Part of the reason for the high cost was shipping from Hong Kong to the US. Even going the less expensive route, via the UK, shipping was more than twice my high end estimate. Ouch. I won't be too casual about bidding on Hong Kong auctions in the future.
I ran the insert through Google Translate and did some manual cleanup on the obvious issues:

Single cask 6872 was distilled on October 16, 1990, under the personal supervision of distillery manager Murdoch Reid, and then aged in a first-fill bourbon cask.
Over time, this hand-selected American oak barrel begins to highlight the whisky's fruity characteristics, accompanied by rare notes of sweet vanilla, spice, and biscuit.
After 29 years of aging in barrels, its unique charm was discovered by Dr. Bill Lumsden.
With its fruity aromas, well-structured character, and rich creaminess, cask 6872 is undoubtedly a representative of Glenmorangie's signature style.

The silky, creamy texture offers flavors of malt, biscuit, orange chocolate, and sugared almonds. This is followed by ice cream soda and a touch of spiciness, finishing with a long, fruity aftertaste.

---END---I'm not so sure about that "vanilla cheese notes". If anyone can read the original and provide a better translation, please do.
Since I was already bidding on Cask 6872 and dealing with arranging shipping from Hong Kong, I also picked up another bottle of the Truffle Oak Reserve 26 year. My first bottle has become a favorite and we keep going back to it, so I figured it would be good to grab a backup while I could. Had I known what shipping was going to end up costing, I might have thought twice.
Adding to the Glenmorangie bonanza, this past Whiskey Wednesday at Julio's Liquors, I picked up two bottles of the newly arrived Harrison Ford expression. I'm not sure how long that will be in stock, so grab it while you can.

Sometimes I pick up things that are not whisky, but rather whisky-related. The recent auction hauls added to my collection of Glenmorangie paraphernalia.
Tote bag, notepad, ashtray, scarf (or pocket square), lapel pins, leather coasters, collapsible ice bag, giraffes golf club topper, a couple of flasks, a dispenser, and a picnic blanket.
The circular flask includes a collapsible cup for more civilized imbibing on the go.
There was also a wall hanging styled after a barrel end, a serving tray, more water pitchers (two large, two small), and a couple of Glencairns.
And, lastly, a bottle display stand styled after the Glenmorangie stills. I paired that with the custom bottle David Blackmore gifted me at a recent tasting we held at Julio's Liquors.

I was remiss the last time I posted recent pickups and overlooked these two bottles, from the fantastic Single Cask Nation. Back in March, Joshua Hatton was the guest for Whiskey Wednesday at Julio's Liquors and we tried a whole line of excellent bottles.
Trying to be a little more responsible, I limited myself to two - an 11 year old Fettercairn and a 21 year old Glen Grant.

I swung back into Julio's Liquors last week to pick up another couple of bottles they were holding for me.
The new Ardbeg Dolce is the latest annual Ardbeg Day special release. Finished in ex-Bourbon and Marsala dolce wine casks.
The Pinhook 10 year rye "Finish Line" is part of the ongoing Loch & Key Whisk(e)y Society vertical series. Each year a parcel of the same rye is bottled, just one year older than the last. The first release was aged 4 years and, despite the name, this isn't the end of the line yet.

Deanston 12 PX finish, NC, NCF, 58.1% ABV.
Vanilla and hints of marzipan and orange, some green apple developing. Quite hot, a bit of water quells that. Spicy clove, liquorice and orange marmalade. Nice waxy mouthfeel and a lingering spiciness.

I've gotten behind in sharing recent pick ups. I've been doing a lot of Drammers Club online tastings, and I took advantage of their Drinqy discount to pick up a few things.
Tenmile Distillery doesn't have distribution in MA yet, but my friend Melissa Giges (late of Compass Box) is repping for them now, and I was impressed by their tasting, so I had to pick up a couple. They make American Single Malt Whisky, which is a relatively small category.
I picked up Little Rest First Edition, which was one of the samples in our tasting that I quite enjoyed. And, being a rye lover, I had to pick up the Double Matured Rye Cask Finish. This wasn't one of the samples, but I'm looking forward to trying this one. I do hope they get a MA distributor soon.
I also picked up the Knob Creek Bourbon X Rye. Knob Creek is a favorite, and I've really liked other bourbon/rye blends, so I figured I'd give this a shot.
And they just got High West Distillery A Midwinter Night's Dram Act 13 in, and had it on discount, so I snapped that up. I hadn't seen it pop up in MA yet. This continues my run - I have all 14 Acts (including Encore).
I also finally corrected a long time oversight on my part and joined the The Scotch Malt Whisky Society of America. I don't know what took me so long, but they were running a promo where you got membership with the purchase of a bottle. So I picked up "The Wandering" Blended Malt Scotch - which appears to be called "Wandering Alchemy" outside the US.

Deanston 8, finished in a Banyuls cask. NC, NCF, 55.5% ABV.
This ticks all the boxes for me! On the nose, luscious dark fruit, sultanas, raisins, figs, all coated in sweet, sticky black treacle, similar to a PX finish, only more so. That familiar Deanston waxiness brings dark chocolate, coffee, sweet caramel, spice and more rich fruit. I’m getting a wee hint of Haribo Happy Cola sweeties as well. 😍
An immensely satisfying dram.

Finn Thomson Glen Garioch 12. NC, NCF, 59.3% abv finished in Tokaji.
Slight ginger spice with wave after wave of red fruit on the nose: raspberries, redcurrants and sweet strawberries, like Angel Delight 😀 (a powdered dessert mix here in the UK). Citrusy orange hits the tongue which develops into sweet candied orange peel, caramel and a lovely dry, woody spiciness. A long finish of liquorice, spice and subtle grassy notes.
It is superb 😍 I get something different with every mouthful. A bottle that is unlikely to last long.

I like to take a photograph of every #whisky I drink and I keep a note of the ones that I like and the ones that didn't quite hit the spot. This year I have tried nearly 200 whiskies and the outstanding ones for me were a 14 y/o Glen Garioch from Independent Bottlers "Tri Carragh", a Deanston 10 y/o Le Panto Butt and a Teaninich 14 y/o from IBs "Fragrant Drops". The biggest disappointment was (whilst still an OK whisky) The Hearach.

A rare bottle of whisky has broken the record for the most expensive wine or spirit sold at auction.
The Macallan 1926 single malt is one of the world's “most sought-after" bottles of Scotch whisky.

Just did one of the best #Scotch #whisky tastings I’ve ever done in my life with #Dramfool this evening. It was a bunch of stuff from their new line(s), coming out soon in a wider retail distribution than they’ve managed in the past.
Their knack as an independent bottler for finding good barrels is just unparalleled. Can’t recommend them enough.
I ordered a couple of things from their new “middle cut” line including a 12yr Tormore, and a 15yr Caol Ila finished in Bruichladdich casks. (!!)

When you open the bottle, the smell of smoke welcomes you. It's a salty welcoming smokey smell.
I poured it on my glass initially, then waited a couple of minutes for the alcohol to pour. I didn't apply any ice or other elements. Tasted directly.
Initial tastes: Woah, it's smokey and salty, I like salt and smoke, but I thought the combo would be bad, however...I'm .... loving it ?

There was a time when blended whisky was all the rage, especially in the US.
Nowadays, whisky aficionados are more keen towards single malts or single casks, if cask strength even better, but blended are still a strong part of the market: less expensive, easier to approach, great for mixology.
But with players like Compass Box or Douglas Laing things have been shaken up a bit.
