Cocktail: the Weathered Beekeeper
This one is a variant of the Old Fashioned. I'm calling it the Weathered Beekeeper—a nod to the honey and smoke flavors, as well as the more rugged flavor of the tequila. 3oz añejo tequila 1/4 tsp honey syrup 1/4 tsp Islay scotch 2 dashes angostura bitters Combine theingredients in a mixing glass. Stir with ice, and then strain into a rocks glass over a large ice cube. Garnish with an orange peel and brandied cherry. I'm quite pleased with how it came out. Cheers 🥃https://sam.upstate.blog/cocktails/2026/cocktail-the-weathered-beekeeper/

In May I discovered a new-to-me auction site, Fine Spirits Auction in France, and by lucky happenstance the first auction running had a Glenmorangie unicorn that I'd been hunting for years: Chateau de Meursault Wood Finish 12 year. It is Finished in Premier Cru White Burgundy Casks for two years after ten years in American Oak (almost certainly ex-bourbon).
I've only seen this come up on an auction site once before, in February, and bidding went to over 825GBP, before fees. That was crazy high and clearly someone really wanted it more than I did.
I was afraid I'd missed my chance, as the previous listing I found for it was in 2020, and the one before that was 2016. I wasn't sure I'd have another shot, but I made myself walk away at that price.
I'm glad I lost it, as I got this one for 208.60 EUR, including fees! That's actually less than it sold for six years ago. Even after factoring in shipping one bottle from France (which wasn't all that bad actually), it was a massive savings. Probably a quarter the total cost. Sometimes things work out in the end! 😁

Some new arrivals from Drammers Club / Drinqy. The recent online Kavalan Whisky tasting included a bottle of the No.1 Distillery Select. It hadn't arrived at the time, so it just shipped, and they offered free shipping on any other bottles added to the shipment, so I pulled the trigger on a few I'd been thinking about.
Compass Box Whisky Glasgow Blend Single Marrying Cask, 'Drammers Club #87'. This was married in an ex-Cameronbridge Lowland Single Grain Cask.
Tenmile Distillery Little Rest American Single Malt Whisky, Double Matured Cask Strength, Batch 002. Tenmile is doing some great things over in Wassaic, NY. And I'm always happy to support my friend Melissa.
FEW Spirits Immortal Rye - Rye Whiskey with Eight Immortals Oolong Tea. You may notice this bottle is opened, as we had a gathering on Saturday - and this shipment happened to arrive earlier that day.
I picked this up as my friend Marc is the distiller at our local Nashoba Valley Spirits, and creator of their own tea-infused bourbon and single malt whisky. So when I saw this I wanted to compare a tea-infused rye. I have to say, the tea influence is very faint here. It isn't a bad pour, but I don't think I'd guess there was tea if I didn't know. I prefer our local offerings.
And then yesterday another box showed up from the UK with a very special rum. Black Tot Rum Rare Old Natural Cask Strength Demerara Rum, Aged 40 Years. This is Demerara Rum distilled in Guyana in 1975, and was the heart of the blended rum served by the Royal Navy until 1970. It will be interesting to compare this with The Last Consignment.

I have never been as stressed about a delivery as I was with this one. These just arrived, minutes ago. I unpacked them as soon as I shut the door on the UPS guy, just to make sure they were fine.
These are three ultra-rare Compass Box Whisky expressions that I have been hunting for years. I have never seen them come up at auction or for sale. Recently, a fellow collector in Europe reached out as they were interested in selling some bottles. I'm being a little vague as I don't want to identify them, they can do so if they wish.
It seemed simple enough, we came to an agreement, I purchased the bottles, and they shipped them to me in the US. This is something I've done before without any issue, but not this time.
This time they got stopped at Customs in the US and they started asking for paperwork I've never been asked for before. Paperwork for a commercial import, which I couldn't provide as I'm an individual and not an importer. At one point I was told they could not deliver it, nor would they return it, so it would be destroyed.
Very anxiety provoking. It didn't help that I was getting conflicting answers every time I talked to UPS, and the clearance department only communicates via a web portal and would not talk to me. This was a multi-week saga of trying to sort this out.
I owe my brilliant wife, Jess, credit for pointing out that I know a few people who are commercial importers, and perhaps they could help. I reached out and a friend was able to get a COLA Waiver approved for importation of these bottles.
I've been waiting a week since providing that waiver to finally receive the bottles. I wasn't going to feel relief until I saw them with my own eyes. I was having literal nightmares about this shipment being destroyed or the like.
What we have is the original Juveniles, bottled for the 20th Anniversary of the bistro in Paris, in 2007.
The 2006 Magic Cask (not to be confused with the 2020 bottling of the same name, with a colorful label) created for LCBO in Canada - the *first* Compass Box expression to feature a wine cask finish.
And Mariage Eleuthera, bottled for the 50th Anniversary of La Maison du Whisky - LMDW, in 2006, I believe.
I'm very happy, and relieved, to have these safely in my possession. My list of CB bottles to hunt slowly shrinks:
Any Maltstock bottle
Big Block
Cabin Proof
Canto Cask 125
D is for Decadence
Décadence Edition Limitée
Delilah's XXV secret bar-only bottling
Elixir
Gagga
Mariage Asyla
Scot-Free
X LyanessAnd there and those impossible to acquire:
Fetishism
Meadows Bee Farm Blend
J+J No:1Happy hunting!

Tonight was amazing. We hosted 20+ of our friends for Pappy's Pizza Party. So much whiskey, pizza, and ice cream.
I have no patience for pretentiousness when it comes to whisky. So we thought, how should we take the piss out of the aura around Pappy Van Winkle, BTAC, and the like? The answer - pair it with pizza and ice cream!
So we ordered a number of pizzas from our favorite local joint, Blue Square Pizza, as well as several frozen pizzas from St. Louis and Chicago - Imo's, Giordano's & Lou Malnati's. We had salad which was mostly veggies from our local CSA, Small Farm.
Dessert was ice cream from the BEST place around - Erikson's Ice Cream. And chocolate from Goodnow Farms.
I put out some nice Glenmorangie, the Compass Box Whisky Hedonism 10th Anniversary, some Willett, Van Winkle from the 10 through the 23, the BTAC collection circa 2012, and a few others.
Friends brought even more pizza, a chocolate cream pie, cookies, a Four Roses Single Barrel, several bottles of Weller, a Penelope, and more I'm probably forgetting. We had a lot of whisky.
We ended up pulling out the Glenmorangie Milsean to compare with the Harrison Ford. The Middle West Spirits Pumpernickel Rye and Ported Pumpernickel for a few who hadn't yet tried them, same for the Copper & Cask Roxie and The Doctor Is In, and even more.
And we killed the Pappy 23!
Fantastic evening - good food, good whisky, and good friends.
Whisky is for sharing, not for staring.

Picked up a few things tonight at Julio's Liquors. Tonight's Whisk(e)y Wednesday at Julio's Liquors was Fettercairn Whisky, and it's cracking stuff. We sampled the 12, 16, 24, and 28 - and a bonus The Dalmore 17 year that will hit the US shelves soon.
Admission to the event included a bottle of the Fettercairn 12, but I couldn't resist picking up the 16 - and the one bottle of 24 left in the state. 😉
The 28 was good, but a lower proof and chill-filtered, unlike the younger expressions. I felt that it lost a little of the bright, orchard fruit notes that I really liked in those. I put the 24 ahead of the 28 for my palate, so I did not pick up the 28.
Definitely worth checking out, IMHO. If you like the light, floral Highland style of Glenmorangie, you might like Fettercairn as well.
I also picked up my pre-order of the new Loch & Key Whisk(e)y Society Proof and Wood Tumblin' Dice 'Dungeons & Donut' 13-year Barrel Proof Straight Rye Whiskey.
Also, as a tip, do not sleep on the next L&K pick of Middle West Spirits pumpernickel rye when it comes in. You're welcome.

Fresh in from Tain, Glenmorangie The Thirty. The case is similar to The Altus 25, but I'm digging the purple, orange, and gold colors.
Looking forward to cracking this one this weekend with some friends.

The penultimate post of the auction haul starts the wave of Single Grain Scotch. I've said it before, single grain is overlooked in the shadow of single malt, but there is some great stuff there. And great deals for the age.
- Sansibar bottling of a 28 year old Cambus
- William Grant & Son bottling of a 25 year old Girvan
- A Signatory 50 year old bottling of North British, distilled in 1962 - this bottling was for Taiwan.
- A Signatory 23 year old bottling of Port Dundas
- A Clan Denny 20 year old Girvan, Vintage 1990
- A Clan Denny 20 year old Invergordon, Vintage 2002

Getting near to the end of the monster auction haul, we're getting into the odds and ends.
- Indri Single Malt Whisky Trini
- Amrut Malt Gurus Greedy Angels 10 year Peated Rum Finish, which is intriguing
- Cotswolds Distillery Single Cask Collection New Vibrations
- Inchdairine Distillery RyeLaw - technically a Single Grain Scotch, but a rye, which is very unusual
- Wild Turkey Heritage Single Barrel 101 Proof
And, for a change of pace, a rum:
- Hampden Estate Rum Great House Distillery Edition 2024. This was the last one I needed to have the complete run from 2019 through 2025, so I'm all caught up.

Moving on from LVMH, the auction shipments also brought a number of Compass Box Whisky bottlings.
- Two bottles of the Hedonism 10th Anniversary, which brings me to three. Sometimes that's how things work out - couldn't find one for years, then my cup runneth over
- The Numinous Cask - this was another unicorn that took years to find
- A backup bottle of Experimental Grain Whisky, as my open bottle has been popular
- A Hedonism H29MMIXB. I had most of the core edition bottlings, but this was a whole to fill.
- Two bottles of the Peat Monster 10th Anniversary, Special Cask Strength Bottling for the Park Avenue Liquor Shop. This was actually a goof - I picked up the two bottles from two different auctions. I grabbed the serving because I plain forgot I'd just recently managed to finally grab it from the other auction.
- Another Peat Monster, this one bottled fit the Swedish Whisky Federation
- A last, but far from least, a true unicorn - Breakthru Blend. I wasn't certain I'd even obtain one of these.
There is one mystery in need to try to unravel. One of the two Hedonism 10th Anniversary bottles appears to be signed by John Glaser , and he wrote "Illegal Bottling" (quotes included). I have no idea what that could mean in this context. Maybe someone from Compass Box can clarify.

It wasn't all Glenmorangie, there were also a few bottles from their sister distillery, Ardbeg
- I finally managed to land a Lord of the Isles. That's been a unicorn I was hunting for a while.
- Seann Chreag 21 year old
- Traigh Bhan TB/07 (seventh edition) - this was actually from Royal Mile Whiskies and not an auction
- Smoketrails Napa Valley Edition
- And a backup bottle of the famous lightly peated Blasda

- Traigh Bhan TB/07 (seventh edition) - this was actually from Royal Mile Whiskies and not an auction
- Smoketrails Napa Valley Edition
- And a backup bottle of the famous lightly peated Blasda
-
There were a lot more Glenmorangie, and related, lots.
- The three bottles of the Natural Cask Strength Commemorative Bottling Distilled On 21st January 1976 are not duplicates - they're three *different* casks, as evidenced by the different ABVs - 59.2%, 60.4%, and 60.8%. I'll need to re-glue the plate on the one box.
Then there is an assortment of other expressions:
- Another bottle of the 26 Year Truffle Oak. That makes three of those I have now, which I think should be sufficient. This was actually the second one I picked up, but I picked up the other one I posted recently from Hong Kong because the price seemed like a deal. Had I known what shipping would cost I might have rethought that.
- A Midwinter Night's Dram - there were two versions of this. I had one, this is the other.
- A Cask-strength 21 year old bottling from 1980
- An old-school 18 year old bottling
- The Dornoch Firth Bridge Commemorative Bottling from 1991
- A Distillery Manager's Choice bottling from 1998
- And the Cask Masters Cask C sample. This is what won the competition and became The Taghta
And then some non-Glenmorangie Glenmorangie:
- Two The Scotch Malt Whisky Society bottlings 125.22 & 125.65
- A brand new Rare Find 18 year Westport bottling. This was just released and didn't come from an auction, but rather Royal Mile Whiskies
- Wilson & Morgan Barrel Selection 18 Year Westport distilled in 2004
- The Thompson Bros. 20 year Westport single cask
- Decadent Drams 21 year Westport
- Malts Of Scotland Westport cask 19029
- That Boutique-y Whisky Company 21 year Westport
Lastly, some non-whisky items - a Glenmorangie bottle stand, a framed advertisement sheet, and an art print of the distillery in winter.

A little while back I shared a photo of a carload of boxes. Most of those were a year's worth of lots from Whisky Auctioneer. Then a couple of days later a similar shipment arrived from Unicorn Auctions. So that was quite an unpacking.
Last year Whisky Auctioneer had one auction just loaded with Glenmorangie, so I went a little crazy and picked up every expression I was missing, and then some... Plus there were others from other auctions.
To start off, I picked up backup bottles of the Pride 1974 & 1978. The 74 is my favorite and the price was quite low, and I picked you the 78 as that's my second choice and it was also a good deal.
But the real wins were all of the Rare Casks I'd been hunting for a while.
- The 12 year Bottled In Honour Of H.S.H. Prince Albert II Of Monaco
- Specially Selected For The 10th Anniversary Of Lola Dzentelmenow
- Cask 31 Hand-Selected By Dr. Bill Lumsden
- Cask 11002 Hand Selected By Dr. Bill Lumsden For MH Private UK
- Cask 6692 Private Reserve Cask "The Millennium"
- Cask 5040 Distillery Manager's Selection
There are more to come in the next post...

This day in history, 1494. Oldest historical reference for Scotch Whiskey.
John Cor is the name of the friar referred to in the first known written reference to a batch of Scotch Whisky on June 1, 1494.
“To Friar John Cor, by order of the King, to make aqua vitae VIII bolls of malt.” — Exchequer Rolls 1494–95, Vol x, p. 487.
