Cocktail: the Weathered Beekeeper
This one is a variant of the Old Fashioned. I'm calling it the Weathered Beekeeper—a nod to the honey and smoke flavors, as well as the more rugged flavor of the tequila. 3oz añejo tequila 1/4 tsp honey syrup 1/4 tsp Islay scotch 2 dashes angostura bitters Combine theingredients in a mixing glass. Stir with ice, and then strain into a rocks glass over a large ice cube. Garnish with an orange peel and brandied cherry. I'm quite pleased with how it came out. Cheers 🥃https://sam.upstate.blog/cocktails/2026/cocktail-the-weathered-beekeeper/

In May I discovered a new-to-me auction site, Fine Spirits Auction in France, and by lucky happenstance the first auction running had a Glenmorangie unicorn that I'd been hunting for years: Chateau de Meursault Wood Finish 12 year. It is Finished in Premier Cru White Burgundy Casks for two years after ten years in American Oak (almost certainly ex-bourbon).
I've only seen this come up on an auction site once before, in February, and bidding went to over 825GBP, before fees. That was crazy high and clearly someone really wanted it more than I did.
I was afraid I'd missed my chance, as the previous listing I found for it was in 2020, and the one before that was 2016. I wasn't sure I'd have another shot, but I made myself walk away at that price.
I'm glad I lost it, as I got this one for 208.60 EUR, including fees! That's actually less than it sold for six years ago. Even after factoring in shipping one bottle from France (which wasn't all that bad actually), it was a massive savings. Probably a quarter the total cost. Sometimes things work out in the end! 😁

Some new arrivals from Drammers Club / Drinqy. The recent online Kavalan Whisky tasting included a bottle of the No.1 Distillery Select. It hadn't arrived at the time, so it just shipped, and they offered free shipping on any other bottles added to the shipment, so I pulled the trigger on a few I'd been thinking about.
Compass Box Whisky Glasgow Blend Single Marrying Cask, 'Drammers Club #87'. This was married in an ex-Cameronbridge Lowland Single Grain Cask.
Tenmile Distillery Little Rest American Single Malt Whisky, Double Matured Cask Strength, Batch 002. Tenmile is doing some great things over in Wassaic, NY. And I'm always happy to support my friend Melissa.
FEW Spirits Immortal Rye - Rye Whiskey with Eight Immortals Oolong Tea. You may notice this bottle is opened, as we had a gathering on Saturday - and this shipment happened to arrive earlier that day.
I picked this up as my friend Marc is the distiller at our local Nashoba Valley Spirits, and creator of their own tea-infused bourbon and single malt whisky. So when I saw this I wanted to compare a tea-infused rye. I have to say, the tea influence is very faint here. It isn't a bad pour, but I don't think I'd guess there was tea if I didn't know. I prefer our local offerings.
And then yesterday another box showed up from the UK with a very special rum. Black Tot Rum Rare Old Natural Cask Strength Demerara Rum, Aged 40 Years. This is Demerara Rum distilled in Guyana in 1975, and was the heart of the blended rum served by the Royal Navy until 1970. It will be interesting to compare this with The Last Consignment.

I have never been as stressed about a delivery as I was with this one. These just arrived, minutes ago. I unpacked them as soon as I shut the door on the UPS guy, just to make sure they were fine.
These are three ultra-rare Compass Box Whisky expressions that I have been hunting for years. I have never seen them come up at auction or for sale. Recently, a fellow collector in Europe reached out as they were interested in selling some bottles. I'm being a little vague as I don't want to identify them, they can do so if they wish.
It seemed simple enough, we came to an agreement, I purchased the bottles, and they shipped them to me in the US. This is something I've done before without any issue, but not this time.
This time they got stopped at Customs in the US and they started asking for paperwork I've never been asked for before. Paperwork for a commercial import, which I couldn't provide as I'm an individual and not an importer. At one point I was told they could not deliver it, nor would they return it, so it would be destroyed.
Very anxiety provoking. It didn't help that I was getting conflicting answers every time I talked to UPS, and the clearance department only communicates via a web portal and would not talk to me. This was a multi-week saga of trying to sort this out.
I owe my brilliant wife, Jess, credit for pointing out that I know a few people who are commercial importers, and perhaps they could help. I reached out and a friend was able to get a COLA Waiver approved for importation of these bottles.
I've been waiting a week since providing that waiver to finally receive the bottles. I wasn't going to feel relief until I saw them with my own eyes. I was having literal nightmares about this shipment being destroyed or the like.
What we have is the original Juveniles, bottled for the 20th Anniversary of the bistro in Paris, in 2007.
The 2006 Magic Cask (not to be confused with the 2020 bottling of the same name, with a colorful label) created for LCBO in Canada - the *first* Compass Box expression to feature a wine cask finish.
And Mariage Eleuthera, bottled for the 50th Anniversary of La Maison du Whisky - LMDW, in 2006, I believe.
I'm very happy, and relieved, to have these safely in my possession. My list of CB bottles to hunt slowly shrinks:
Any Maltstock bottle
Big Block
Cabin Proof
Canto Cask 125
D is for Decadence
Décadence Edition Limitée
Delilah's XXV secret bar-only bottling
Elixir
Gagga
Mariage Asyla
Scot-Free
X LyanessAnd there and those impossible to acquire:
Fetishism
Meadows Bee Farm Blend
J+J No:1Happy hunting!

Tonight was amazing. We hosted 20+ of our friends for Pappy's Pizza Party. So much whiskey, pizza, and ice cream.
I have no patience for pretentiousness when it comes to whisky. So we thought, how should we take the piss out of the aura around Pappy Van Winkle, BTAC, and the like? The answer - pair it with pizza and ice cream!
So we ordered a number of pizzas from our favorite local joint, Blue Square Pizza, as well as several frozen pizzas from St. Louis and Chicago - Imo's, Giordano's & Lou Malnati's. We had salad which was mostly veggies from our local CSA, Small Farm.
Dessert was ice cream from the BEST place around - Erikson's Ice Cream. And chocolate from Goodnow Farms.
I put out some nice Glenmorangie, the Compass Box Whisky Hedonism 10th Anniversary, some Willett, Van Winkle from the 10 through the 23, the BTAC collection circa 2012, and a few others.
Friends brought even more pizza, a chocolate cream pie, cookies, a Four Roses Single Barrel, several bottles of Weller, a Penelope, and more I'm probably forgetting. We had a lot of whisky.
We ended up pulling out the Glenmorangie Milsean to compare with the Harrison Ford. The Middle West Spirits Pumpernickel Rye and Ported Pumpernickel for a few who hadn't yet tried them, same for the Copper & Cask Roxie and The Doctor Is In, and even more.
And we killed the Pappy 23!
Fantastic evening - good food, good whisky, and good friends.
Whisky is for sharing, not for staring.

Picked up a few things tonight at Julio's Liquors. Tonight's Whisk(e)y Wednesday at Julio's Liquors was Fettercairn Whisky, and it's cracking stuff. We sampled the 12, 16, 24, and 28 - and a bonus The Dalmore 17 year that will hit the US shelves soon.
Admission to the event included a bottle of the Fettercairn 12, but I couldn't resist picking up the 16 - and the one bottle of 24 left in the state. 😉
The 28 was good, but a lower proof and chill-filtered, unlike the younger expressions. I felt that it lost a little of the bright, orchard fruit notes that I really liked in those. I put the 24 ahead of the 28 for my palate, so I did not pick up the 28.
Definitely worth checking out, IMHO. If you like the light, floral Highland style of Glenmorangie, you might like Fettercairn as well.
I also picked up my pre-order of the new Loch & Key Whisk(e)y Society Proof and Wood Tumblin' Dice 'Dungeons & Donut' 13-year Barrel Proof Straight Rye Whiskey.
Also, as a tip, do not sleep on the next L&K pick of Middle West Spirits pumpernickel rye when it comes in. You're welcome.
