  1. Just spotted this, right on my doorstep. Sunday 28 June for a trail half marathon (or 10k) taking in Mount Harry, Blackcap and Plumpton Ridge, with views down to Brighton and north over the Weald. Sounds fabulous and it actually runs most of my personal favourite half route backwards. #running #Brighton #SouthDowns

  2. As a #SouthDowns runner, I am keen on being able to describe my routes and views when I am #running to others, and that means that I occasionally focus on making sure that the landscape names are present in #OpenStreetMap. Today, my son and I went on a walk to investigate the supposed location of a trig point that isn’t at all obvious while walking the trails of the hill that it is on. Conversation turned to names of the landscape, including the meaning of ‘Wick Bottom,’ just south of our house.

  3. The mist has not yet burned off in Woodingdean, so my run around the Snake was devoid of views, though my way was brightened by the gorse bushes, enthusiastic against the grey, blurred morning. I love gorse, as long as it doesn’t crowd the trail; it seems to bloom in spite of everything, never afraid to add gaiety while neighbours are still cowed by winter. A lovely 5km with 117m EG (woo!) #running #SouthDowns

  4. The Living Coast is a UNESCO World Biosphere that encompasses the chalk block of the South Downs, stretching from the River Adur in the west to the River Ouse in the East, and with the city of Brighton & Hove at its heart.

  5. Cycled along part of the Downs Link today. It was a grey day but not raining and relatively warm (12 or so degrees C). Mind you, it was quite windy (and it was a head wind, of course) along the coast.

I took the train to Brighton. From the rail station, I went down to the coast through the centre of town and then along the National Cycle Network route 2 through Hove and Portslade by Sea to Shoreham-by-Sea. There, I headed inland on NCN route 223, the **Downs Link**, to Christ's Hospital just outside Horsham where I took the train back home.

The Downs Link follows the river Adur for quite some while. The river is very wide at Shoreham-by-Sea as you can see in one of the photos attached. The whole route is quite lovely, with great views of the South Downs for the first part. It is almost entirely off-road and mostly suitable for gravel bikes (caveat: I was on a mountain bike) but probably not road bikes. Given the amount of rain we've had recently, it was unsurprisingly wet with lots of puddles but, luckily, very little actual muddy slippery bits.

The ride was 42 km. I took just over 3 hours with lots of stops for photos, charging phone which died halfway, talking to people (and their dogs), etc. Total time actually cycling was 1 hour and 40 minutes.

Highly recommended if you're in the area!

  10. @jasonramasami running out from Woodingdean towards Kingston near Lewes. Vendetta is two sides of that little triangle, dropping 80m off the ridge and then 90m back up to the fingerpost in the photo. You can carry along the ridge SE with views over the Ouse until you reach Rodmell and from there it is a climb through Telscombe village to the cliffs past Telscombe Tye. #SouthDowns

  11. Misty Balmer Huff: Soph asked me if we could run a 10-miler, because she hadn’t run one since getting pregnant. ‘Sure!’ I said, confident that I could show her lovely views from Balmer Huff as we headed towards Blackcap and then back through the woods. The weather had other ideas, dawning misty and not burning off until we were back in the coffee shop. So a spooky trail run rather than a spectacular one, but we all enjoyed the peace, very pleasant temperature and no rain! #running #SouthDowns
