I was adding details to more memorial markers (stones, crosses and plaques) on #OpenStreetMap yesterday, and wondered about a memorial cross in a pub garden not far from #Horsham, marked ‘Walter Budd.’ An unusual place for a cross, I thought. The unfortunate Walter had epilepsy and albinism, both conditions linked, bizarrely, with sexual deviancy. He committed suicide at the age of just 26. The BBC covered the story last year.

Yesterday, I went out for a (50 km) ride with the Horsham & Crawley cycle group, a relaxed Cycling UK group which often explores the quiet lanes around both towns in Surrey and West Sussex. Lovely day with two stops: at a café (Cadence Club Cafe, 50.953023° -0.306979°) and a pub for lunch (The White Horse, 51.008317° -0.305123°).

OK, I'm done with meekly accepting the arrogance of #Sussex drivers. The utter weapon that nearly wiped out my son on a narrow road in #Horsham was the final straw.
I've used some prize money from a work project to fund front and rear action cameras. Every single close pass will be reported to operation crackdown.

I had a spare day of annual leave today (March is "use it or lose it" month), so I spent the day walking in the countryside around #Horsham taking moody, misty photos.
I spotted many robins, magpies, pigeons, and crows, a couple of kites, and a gaggle of geese.
I walked a hair over 10 miles. My legs are grumbling, but it was worth it.
We're so lucky in the #uk to have an extensive network of public footpaths and bridleways.

Cycled along part of the Downs Link today. It was a grey day but not raining and relatively warm (12 or so degrees C). Mind you, it was quite windy (and it was a head wind, of course) along the coast.
I took the train to Brighton. From the rail station, I went down to the coast through the centre of town and then along the National Cycle Network route 2 through Hove and Portslade by Sea to Shoreham-by-Sea. There, I headed inland on NCN route 223, the **Downs Link**, to Christ's Hospital just outside Horsham where I took the train back home.
The Downs Link follows the river Adur for quite some while. The river is very wide at Shoreham-by-Sea as you can see in one of the photos attached. The whole route is quite lovely, with great views of the South Downs for the first part. It is almost entirely off-road and mostly suitable for gravel bikes (caveat: I was on a mountain bike) but probably not road bikes. Given the amount of rain we've had recently, it was unsurprisingly wet with lots of puddles but, luckily, very little actual muddy slippery bits.
The ride was 42 km. I took just over 3 hours with lots of stops for photos, charging phone which died halfway, talking to people (and their dogs), etc. Total time actually cycling was 1 hour and 40 minutes.
Highly recommended if you're in the area!

Dad channels his best talk radio dickhead voice and mutters "I suppose, I guess you can't say boys and girls any more." I swear he's partly addressing it to me. You had better believe I left him hanging.

Last week at KubeCon, brunching with friends and hanging out in cafés during downtime, had reminded me that getting out of the house is good occasionally.
Anyone know if there’s good coworking spaces in #Horsham, #WestSussex? Or if I should just go to a café with my laptop for a morning a week or something?
The weather’s getting nicer, the walk to town will do me good, and I like the background noise ambiance.
