Cycled the Downs Link from Christ's Hospital to Brighton via Shoreham-by-sea. A large segment of the route goes alongside the River Adur. We were lucky with the weather for once! Lovely day and a great ride.

Cycled along part of the Downs Link today. It was a grey day but not raining and relatively warm (12 or so degrees C). Mind you, it was quite windy (and it was a head wind, of course) along the coast.
I took the train to Brighton. From the rail station, I went down to the coast through the centre of town and then along the National Cycle Network route 2 through Hove and Portslade by Sea to Shoreham-by-Sea. There, I headed inland on NCN route 223, the **Downs Link**, to Christ's Hospital just outside Horsham where I took the train back home.
The Downs Link follows the river Adur for quite some while. The river is very wide at Shoreham-by-Sea as you can see in one of the photos attached. The whole route is quite lovely, with great views of the South Downs for the first part. It is almost entirely off-road and mostly suitable for gravel bikes (caveat: I was on a mountain bike) but probably not road bikes. Given the amount of rain we've had recently, it was unsurprisingly wet with lots of puddles but, luckily, very little actual muddy slippery bits.
The ride was 42 km. I took just over 3 hours with lots of stops for photos, charging phone which died halfway, talking to people (and their dogs), etc. Total time actually cycling was 1 hour and 40 minutes.
Highly recommended if you're in the area!

The Downs Link was marvellous – especially this bit where the tight hedgerows give way to rolling views. We’ve wanted to ride this route for ages, and half term provided the perfect opportunity for a there-and-back overnighter. #BikeTooter #cycling #familycycling #Downslink

#FootpathFriday This is the track bed of the disused railway between Horsham and Guildford, #Sussex, England. It is now a bridleway for walkers, cyclists and horse riders. The railway line opened in 1865 and closed in 1965. Now known as the #DownsLink, there are possibly more travellers today than when it was a railway!

I've been meaning to do this for years, I finally cycled all the way from #Horsham to #Shoreham along the #DownsLink

@Peternimmo We had a fatality on a National Cycle route in West Sussex. Despite the coroner heavily criticising the county council concerning the safety of the crossing and called for action, still nothing is done. #WestSussex #WSCC #DownsLink https://bridgethedownslink.org/

CLOSURE: #DownsLink #Bramber #UpperBeeding to protect public safety while resurfacing works are undertaken either side of Botolph’s Bridge on the #DownsLink and #SouthDownsWay. Closure 25th Sept 2023 for 14 days - 8th Oct 2023. The routes will available evenings and weekends.

I did a 103km 2-day #gravelbike ride with an overnight in the tent.
Starting local on the off-road #DownsLink track which is outside my house then up to the South Downs Way that has some steep climbs & fast bumpy downhills.
Day 1 was 50km with about 2500 feet of elevation. At one point I was carrying the bike up a wild bush escarpment (my Garmin went a bit crazy sending me the wrong way) Day 2 was a further 53km but I kept it flatter with only 820 feet of climbing

Continuing to practice my cycling today. This time on my fat wheeled mountain bike which eats up gravel but is also a bit of a slog at times.
Took the route from Horsham to Shoreham By Sea on the #DownsLink Gravel, bridleways, mud, single track and fire road.35km there, a quick stop for fish n chips by the sea, then 35km back. 70km so I'm pleased.

I explored a detour off the #DownsLink in West Sussex. Note the 'double-deck' railway bridge icon used along the route. Inspectors instructed the bridge to be raised before opening the line to reduce the gradient. The railway operated 1865-1965. #FingerpostFriday #WestSussex

Good news from #WestSussex Last Friday (28 April) the #CountrysideVolunteers were working on the #DownsLink at #Rudgwick installing new finger posts and undertaking vegetation management. #FingerpostFriday
-
Since it is attached at both ends it's not quite a fingerpost, but this one does indicate the location of an iconic 'double deck' bridge that features on all the fingerposts of the #DownsLink. #FingerpostFriday

This is good news! ADVANCE NOTICE CLOSURE: Due to surface improvements works the #DownsLink at #Southwater: BRIDLEWAY NO. 3568 will have a CLOSURE between #Southwater and #ChristsHospital from mid May 2023 for approximately 8 weeks. #WestSussex

Stopped for a little break on my cycle ride on the #DownsLink and this very friendly #robin came to say hello. It was hopping around on the ground coming closer and closer. On to the bench, the wooden table, on to my bike. It would fly away and then come back and do it again. Went on for 5 minutes or more. All seemed very playful reminded me of my puppy when she wants to play. I gave it a little water. Maybe I should carry bird seed on my next #bikeride
