A "There was only one bed" in the wild!
To be very, very, _very_ honest I'm not with the Chinese on how thick a matress should be*, but their duvets always look amazing! This one not only got the thick edge "ribbon" in a contrasting colour - the seam between the edge and the duvet top is covered with a decorative ribbon. *Chef's kiss* A+!

Totto, I don't think we're at Heng Dian World Studios anymore. I might be wrong, but it looks like they're outdoors, in a more northern part of China. If that's the case it's one of several outdoor scenes where production seems to have favoured sparkly new location + outdoors over studio setting + convenience.
(The one big tell if they're outdoors? How the wind moves the actors' hair.)

To not make a weird gap in the collection; enjoy this scene where the set almost goes in a red and blue pallette - save for that jade phoenix down to the left. I wonder if it's a plot point 🤔

I like those door guardians! Too bad I don't recognise them - it's not like they give you deity flash cards when you study Chinese religion on master's level*. While this style is still live in China (unlike similar European styles in illuminated manuscripts) it's not a given any set designer can reproduce it. Of course it can be prints, but allow me to dream about a talented on-site painter, please!

According to MyDramaList this is _not_ an Ed Guo drama. I'm... a bit shocked, but it is true that C-drama land often produces visually stunning pieces, so I shouldn't be surprised. So far, and I'm only 4+ minutes in, I've seen so many stunning props and awesome costumes my brain screeching 😅. I'll return tomorrow, when I can start earlier to make time for long comments.

This production is blessed with
A: a good storyboard artist
B: a director and set designers who follow through.Having the emperor on a podium is standard, and usually he is posed like he mesh with it. Here instead everything serves to underscore how small the person on the throne is; the gigantic dragon wall, that he slumps behind the table like a toddler, and Lu in the foreground, several steps below, looking down(!) on him.

On one hand: you recognise the Heng Dian World Studios' permanent sets after you've seen two wuxia dramas. On the other hand: that drama productions easily and cheaply can film market scenes on full sized streets with extras does A Lot. It's easy to forget how weirdly bare studio set "outdoors" looked in tv productions up until the 90s, not just in China but globaly. Even BBC's big Narnia production suffered from it.

The Demon King has a humble and cosy home, don't you think? Smallish, rustic furniture, and he's probably recieving guests where he studies - that 'kökssoffa' he's sitting on is a telltale sign. The kökssoffa is a ~standardised item in Sweden; a firm, pew-like couch with storage, that you put in the kitchen. In origin it was placed at the wall closest to the entrance, so people who came to chat "for a few minutes" had somewhere to sit.

"Yeah, yeah - you take the gold and whatever, I take the furniture! The decoration on that shelving unit looks sooi good! And some sturdy baskets! Can't go wrong with baskets! Oh! That chest! Don't mind if I do..."(Also, there's a 50% chance production went to the broken props department of Heng Dian World Studios and borrowed a cartload for this scene.)

The sets are either by the designer who worked on Moonlight Mystique*, or someone who saw that drama, thought "You can actually _do_ that???" and went hogwild. I'm also getting a strong whiff of Moebius - I'm just waiting for a weird flying machine to sail in.
(*that set design was wild - like Bollywood had crashed into a Las Vegas hotel and mutated into a black velvet poster - I loved it!)

There are at least two wall hangers with pockets in this home. Both are used for storing books (ie the Chinese scroll kind), maybe also sorting them. Apart for giving me even more DIY ideas, I kinda' wonder how historically correct they are. This production has a rather high base line for this, so I assume there was a Tang equivalent, but I want to see the documentation... _for fun_.

I'll probably look through the bts material for these dragons specifically. It is a glorious! I want to know how they made it, because there are _so_ many possibilities. It's usually not real bronze, but it can be plaster or clay with leaf metal. It can be a 3D print with aftercare and paint. It can even be a green cushion with the dragon greenscreened over. I hope for a real object - that would be so cool!

That poor maid from Seven Nights Of Snow* has had a hard day's work here! Also; all of the candles are red. In itself not strange considering it's a Chinese production. The question is why this is the first drama I've seen where they're any other colour than white.
(*The only C-drama I've seen where we're shown someone lighting the candles that exist in myriads in the backgrounds of wuxia.)

I'm fascinated by the set designer's nack for creating rooms that feels like a home! This is not exactly my taste, but the weathering on the pieces, the colour combinations and the light makes you feel like it's a lived in house - you can even feel a slight vibe of residential school. This puts the weird and cold milleus at the beginning in another light; there was a point to them.
And yes, I'm stealing ideas like crazy.

This is rare! I guess this is Tanghua's room, and it's cosy; warm wooden tones, a bed with fluffy covers (but in a _manly_ way, of course), and those wall hangings really seal the deal! Normally interiors in C-dramas verge on grandness, sometimes to the point that they look impractical. But this room is perfectly liveable - I'd even stay there if I was allowed to bring a thicker matress.
Also: IKEA hack at one o' clock.

*sigh* Life would be so much easier if I didn't photograph every nook and cranny of the tower ship (this is the owner's cabin). But I'm not the only one in love with it, production have put oodles of work in making it come to life, and done a dang good job! It's not just the outside shots (that must've gobbled up 50% of their money), but also the unified look of corridors and cabins. I want to makr a model of it so bad!

A frame tents - not just for Vikings! (Not a hard design to come up with - the hard part is hauling around an ungodly amount of lumber while travelling. Ask me how I know...) I love the decorations, though - if I still was active in the SCA I'd totally st... _use it as an inspiration_.

We're not in Heng Dian World Studios anymore! While it is possible to weather sets the carvings are a bit too detailed - HDWS does great work, but they err on using modern materials and reducing complexity. I wonder which old temple had to bear a drama production for days?

I have no idea what Guillermo del Toro is watching in his free time, but I think Mysterious Lotus Casebook would be to his liking; it has Cogwheels. True, he toned it down somewhere after Hellboy II, but I'm kinda' with him and CDrama in this. A good cogwheel sequence improves things!
