Season Two Episode Nine: Reframing Narratives with Ecocriticism With Dr Jenny Kerber for Solarpunk Presents Podcast
In this episode, Ariel discusses the topic of ecocriticism with Dr Jenny Kerber, Associate Professor of English at Wilfrid Laurier University.
What is ecocriticism? Why is it important, especially for environmental activists and solarpunks, as a narrative reframing device? Solarpunks work very closely with speculation and imagination and as architects of the narratives by which we live our lives, it helps to have tools like ecocriticism at our disposal.
Join Ariel and Dr. Kerber to think through terms like “wilderness” and “nature” and “the Anthropocene”. How do we hold on to hope, despite critical engagement with the dark side of our environmental narratives?

Remove Riven's story and the game doesn't really stand on its own anymore. Because the frontier between puzzles and story is much more vague. This makes it much easier ans interesting to progress in the game if you figure out WHY the obstacles exist and WHO put them here.
From my perspective as an - almost exclusively - narrative-driven player, it's a formidable strength. -

Almost done with Tuesday's environmental storytelling talk! Just added the final bits and bobs, now for the last touches now :)
This'll be an intro only. Seeing how many slides there are it'll be a good 30 minutes already.

What could this message mean? Better head in and find out....

"That's how it always begins. Very small."
The 'Hinton Hole' is a good example of an environmental feature that evolves over time.
If the player is going to revisit the same game space repeatedly, you can have the space evolve to communicate what is happening in the wider game. The change can communicate neglect, or development, or corruption, or gentrification, etc.

Just came across Anna Anthropy's cool activity for helping folks learn environmental storytelling -- as in, how to communicate character info, relationships, histories, future events, etc.
It is a character generator with juicy prompts: https://w.itch.io/roll-up-a-guy
For interactive, film, TV, novel ideation.
Pair this with putting the description in a page, script, design doc, or design map.
