Quite an effective way to show that Fan Yun is skilled while Suyin (her maid) is a beginner; only Fan is using an easel. I'm not sure easels were a thing in old China (and now I'm insanely curious of Chinese arting tools history), but the Nine Cities is basically C-drama land's equivalent of Hollywood's Oldcountryland, so production whipped up a rather nice one for her anyway.

Having to do a wanking motion in order to do something AI-related feels a bit on the nose.
I _have_ seen C-dramas that don't get that snow and winters are cold. But overall C-drama land seem to grok those things far better than Hollywood and a lot of Western media. This is shot indoors, yet all but one actors* go to great length to look cold and miserable. Bai Cai is rubbing her hands because she frose her ass off building that little snow figure.

Architects use lego since the bricks are standardised, and iirc Lego produced (or produces - wading through internet is A Chore rn) special sets for them. Wikipedia doesn't mention this, but I remember that the blocks are supposed to be only white. Anyway, it doesn't look like ms Huo is playing here. At all.

This is Chong Yao's home. Note how agressively real it is compared to the Technicolour 80s feverdreams of the demon palaces. Here everything is muted brown, and since we're in the kitchen we can see the grain bags, the steamers, and even traces of flour on the old baking table. Neither absurd chrystal lamps nor flamboyant carpet patterns in this place, but it gived a sense of home.

Remove Riven's story and the game doesn't really stand on its own anymore. Because the frontier between puzzles and story is much more vague. This makes it much easier ans interesting to progress in the game if you figure out WHY the obstacles exist and WHO put them here.
From my perspective as an - almost exclusively - narrative-driven player, it's a formidable strength.
Spent 15 minutes in Riven doing absolutely nothing except looking at a pile of wooden baskets tied to floating spheres, trying to figure out if they are some kind of fishing nets and how the native villagers use them.
They're just there. In the water. They have absolutely no relation to any puzzle whatsoever.
*This* is why I think it's one of the greatest game of all time.

The 'Hinton Hole' is a good example of an environmental feature that evolves over time.
If the player is going to revisit the same game space repeatedly, you can have the space evolve to communicate what is happening in the wider game. The change can communicate neglect, or development, or corruption, or gentrification, etc.
