Fun fact: once you get past the origin stories in Journey To The West, one of the first things that happen is that someone tries to steal Xuanzang's kasaya. Here the opposite happens - they're given one. How the group gains knowledge and how they pick up clothes for their roles work in parallell.

Not many embroideries in this drama, but some fantastic prints. Like this cloud pattern on Banxia's shawl. The crisp lines and full hue makes me suspect it's stenciled or block-printed, not run through a fabric printer. The latter usually gives the print a 'dusty' look, though with the resources Heng Dian World Studios has I wouldn't be surprised if they have superior machines. Anyway, block-printing would be totally correct for Tang fashion

To be fair to this drama; while it has few embroideries it has some really awesome prints. In my SCA days I'd have killed for fabric patterned like the backing on that blue coat. And to make past me even more jealous; judging from RedNote at least some of the materials used are over the shelf fabric in China.

Love Banxia's outfit here! It's skews more to ultramarine on the screen than in my pic, but both versions are awesome. Blue is one of those colours that works almost every time, it's close to cheating to use it. And that gradient on her skirt and shawl makes it all come together. The one thing I miss is embroideries - not that they're needed, it's just been very few of them in this drama. I guess they put most of their budget on VFX.

That's a _very_ interesting hat! Given how hard costuming are leaning into Tang dynasty fashion, I wouldn't put it past a designer finding the original in a Tang manuscript and go "That one's fun! Let's use it on a character!" And then they just waited for the moment - or the hat - to drop.

And to continue the theme of 'Martha just doesn't grok romance'. Despite literal romantic violins in the background, my only thought here is
"Excellent! It's possible to see how his clothes are constructed!"*(*His undergarment is made of a rather losely woven cotton fabric - though it could be linnen or synthetic. The fabric is also crinkled before it's sewn, which doesn't bode well for his BO.)

Another example of 'the more bonkers the theme, the more grounded the details'. I can't say how accurate that purse is for China, but it could have been lifted straight from a painting by Albertus Pictor (Swedish 15thC church painter) or earlier sources. It used to be called cut-purse, since it was easy for pickpockets to cut its strings and run off. This version is fastened with locked metal hoops, though, so I don't think Xuanjue worries.

"A medical formation" - looks very much like Xuanjue pours a salt ring around the house. Not wrong - it works on autonomous cars after all - and it's interesting to see it in a Chinese context. I associate the method with the Anglophone sphere. Old Swedish methods involved bolting tokens to things, or keeping steel or silver for protection.
The construction of his shoes is also interesting - they're really made to stay on.

It's interesting to note that while Tang Dynasty Occult Mysteries was a Scooby Doo type of drama - and thus pretty grounded - and The Demon Hunter's Romance is a Sabrina* type drama - and even so fairly bonkers - it's the _latter_ that has costuming on a high level of historical correctness for the Tang dynasty.
(*Sabrina the Teenage Witch, ie magic exists, so what?)

I suddenly regret the sombrero point a few toots back*. To be clear, even if production has taken several creative liberties with this hanfu that hat _is_ of a traditional Chinese model. It's basically a round shade with a hole at the top for the wearer's topknot. That point at the top is the character's hair.

Production is regularly fanning out from historically correct costuming, ending up somewhere between "Document everything and handspin the thread!!!" and "I don't care if they didn't use sombreros! I think sombreros are _stylish_ and will put one on every imperial guard!!!". So I doubt Jinglang's pleated collar and form fitted bodice are actually Tang period, but _dang_ they look good!

One thing that's fairly consistent in C-drama is that the more serious the situation, the darker the costumes. This is a prime example - even his guan is black. And the costume designer took the premise and ran with it! Two colours, black and gold, and embroideries that both give the character wings and enhances how thorny the situation is.
(Side note: doesn't this actor look a bit like Vincent Price?)

I really like the costumes of this drama. In a way they're mid-level; you'd look at them and say 'yup - that's basic wuxia costuming', and the designers have used embroideries sparingly. OTH all costumes are well put together, balanced, and are matching their characters. The latter also means they sometimes slams all the buttons and give someone A Fantastic Outfit - like lady Cao's hanfu here

I'm a bit conflicted since this is the murder victim, but the pic is fairly inoccuous. Also - this is _definitely_ a holdover from my SCA days, during the time when Teh Interwebs was an inkling of itself, and you had to rely on pictures in coffe table books for reconstructions.

The immortals of this village are _clearly_ 1970s hippies! They even use macramé! In brown + orange - that cursed colour combination that _should have died_ somewhere around...

I mean, everyone have different tastes, and macramé is having a revival, and all that... Also, since they _are_ immortals they kind of have a licence to put their craft on life support.

Speaking of detailing... I guess the decorations on Zhazha's vest thingy are laser cut - the edges are a bit angular and sharp. Thank you laser cutter, I'd say! Looks awesome! Those squiggles are also a prime example of C-drama details that makes me go
"Haven't I seen those patterns somewhere closer? On a runestone or so?"
C-drama is of course Not A Reliable Source, but every time it happens it's like hitting a sore tooth.

Ah! A rare costume change! Since Burning Flames leans into cartoon storytelling the characters keep their costume the same way superheroes stick to their spandex design. It's also a rare glimpse of the quality of the costume work; note the detailing on Bai Cai's wrist guards. The reason Gou's hanfu is so much simpler is probably the detailed armour he normally wears. I thought he wore brocade first, but alas - his top layer is probably heat printed 🥲

Maybe not the point of this fighting scene, but I love Hei Long's* nail polish! He should add some rainbow glitter to give it depth and it'll be perfect.

According to MyDramaList this is _not_ an Ed Guo drama. I'm... a bit shocked, but it is true that C-drama land often produces visually stunning pieces, so I shouldn't be surprised. So far, and I'm only 4+ minutes in, I've seen so many stunning props and awesome costumes my brain screeching 😅. I'll return tomorrow, when I can start earlier to make time for long comments.

He doesn't just have scars in his face, his clothes have slits like there's no tomorrow. On one hand this feels like a modern detail, on the other hand slits were the Absolute Height Of Fashion in 16thC Europe*, so I wouldn't exclude a similar fad in Asia. I'm curious to see if the detailing reveals him to be an important character later - seems like a lot of work for just one scene
(*those who could even had artfully slit fingers on their gloves)

The drama is set in the fictional empire of "great Jin/Chin", so I guess I was correct about the Qing-ish dynasty. But those extremely long pointy "back flaps" are a real historical detail. They were part of the mandated uniform of officials for a while, as a measure to keep people from Doing Intrigues. Ie; if you try to whisper to your neighbour in court you get his back flap in your eye. Probably a Ming dynasty thing, but don't quote me on that.

Debating going in to work on the weekend to spread out a fabric project all over the floor. I have more floor space at my office than home, and this fabric is 60 inches wide and 3 years long. I just need to place my pattern pieces so I know how to cut it. I can already tell I got at least half a yard too much, which is a blessing and a slightly expensive curse.
Context: I'm working on a costume for my partner, basically a loose long asymmetric vest. I'm following a kurta pattern, just not adding the sleeves. #Sewing #costuming #larp -
