You know, I started studying Mandarin 1996, and been serious about my China studies on and off since then. I've been to the National Historical Museum in Beijing, and I'm a gadgeteer to my core. Yet _this_ is the first clear picture I get of a Chinese magnetical compass*. Life moves in mysterious ways.

I don't remember much of chaos theory, only half the sentence that a butterfly in China flapping its wings... something, something causing humungous stuff elsewhere. This ties nicely to the saying of Zhuangzi "I dreamt I was a butterfly...", so I have a hunch that them showing up en masse here alludes both to not knowing whether you're in a dream, and to imminent chaos. Here they are hidden in the pattern on Banxia's sleeve.

A "There was only one bed" in the wild!
To be very, very, _very_ honest I'm not with the Chinese on how thick a matress should be*, but their duvets always look amazing! This one not only got the thick edge "ribbon" in a contrasting colour - the seam between the edge and the duvet top is covered with a decorative ribbon. *Chef's kiss* A+!

Totto, I don't think we're at Heng Dian World Studios anymore. I might be wrong, but it looks like they're outdoors, in a more northern part of China. If that's the case it's one of several outdoor scenes where production seems to have favoured sparkly new location + outdoors over studio setting + convenience.
(The one big tell if they're outdoors? How the wind moves the actors' hair.)

Yes, they are hugging, but it's episode 33 and they're almost engaged, so they are allowed.
My main focus is of the printed pattern on the hanging roomdividers in the background. White flowers on a pastel blue background, almost too delicate to see. I'd call it xianxia Marimekko, if I'd actually liked marimekko. As of now I can only put it on the list of things I'd st... buy if I ever get to Heng Dian World Studios.

(For anyone curious; it is an actual Chinese historical method of making a ball, not an invention for modern C-drama purposes. Unfortunately I neither remember the name of the game it was used in, nor the rules for said game. I don't sports so well, so these things don't stick in my mind.)

Not many embroideries in this drama, but some fantastic prints. Like this cloud pattern on Banxia's shawl. The crisp lines and full hue makes me suspect it's stenciled or block-printed, not run through a fabric printer. The latter usually gives the print a 'dusty' look, though with the resources Heng Dian World Studios has I wouldn't be surprised if they have superior machines. Anyway, block-printing would be totally correct for Tang fashion

One for the list of 'Hollywood would never...' This is a yellow waterfall* from a character scared out of his wits. Quite tastefully done, all things considered.
Edit: apparently I was wrong - there's even possession-pissing around. Might be my inability to watch horror that hampers me.

And to make past me even more jealous; judging from RedNote at least some of the materials used are over the shelf fabric in China.

Love Banxia's outfit here! It's skews more to ultramarine on the screen than in my pic, but both versions are awesome. Blue is one of those colours that works almost every time, it's close to cheating to use it. And that gradient on her skirt and shawl makes it all come together. The one thing I miss is embroideries - not that they're needed, it's just been very few of them in this drama. I guess they put most of their budget on VFX.

Ma al di là della forza temuta da tutti, Luo Binghe nutre per lo shizun una devozione assoluta e sentimenti che ormai è stanco di nascondere. E che Shen Qingqiu non può più ignorare. Ogni incontro tra i due si trasforma così in un duello silenzioso tra inganni e rivelazioni, tra verità e menzogne, e il loro legame prende una direzione sempre più ambigua, in bilico tra diffidenza e tenerezza. Mentre segreti sepolti e trame irrisolte emergono dalle ombre del Cammino del fiero demone immortale, Shen Qingqiu capisce che il passato dell’uomo di cui porta il volto è un enigma che potrebbe travolgerlo. E che, per sopravvivere, dovrà affrontare la prova più difficile: guardare Luo Binghe per ciò che è davvero… e accettare che il loro destino non ammette più ritorno.
Arrivata praticamente alla fine della serie (il quarto volume, infatti, raccoglie racconti che integrano la vicenda principale), ho dei sentimenti contrastanti: da una parte mi sono divertita molto, sia perché Shen Qingqiu finisce per essere molto simpatico, sia perché il ribaltamento del classico romanzo erotico per uomini etero riesce bene e ne viene esposta tutta l’assurdità; dall’altra parte, questa è pur sempre una serie romance e non posso fare a meno di essere agghiacciata dal fatto che Shen Qingqiu finisca a fare coppia con Luo Binghe.
È vero che Luo Binghe ha l’ingrato compito di mostrare tutta la stupidità dell’eroe etero-basico dei romanzi erotici del tipo “stallone da monta” e che Mo Xiang Tong Xiu cerca di ammorbidire questo fatto mostrando anche la sua versione gentile da romanzo erotico per donne, ma a me metteva ansia ogni volta che entrava in scena, come se fosse il serial killer e non l’interesse amoroso del protagonista: da questo punto di vista le cose non sono migliorare affatto rispetto al secondo volume.
Anzi, a questo va aggiunto l’ultimo capitolo, che è stato piuttosto difficile da leggere: anche qui, razionalmente mi è chiara la volontà dell’autrice di ribaltare i cliché del genere per esporli al ridicolo, ma quella scena per me è risultata più fonte di disagio che di divertimento. Si può certamente spezzare una lancia a favore di Mo Xiang Tong Xiu perché questo è il suo primo lavoro, ma non è da qui che vi consiglierei di fare la sua conoscenza.
Parimenti, se avete amato Il gran maestro della scuola demoniaca e/o La benedizione dell’ufficiale divino, magari vi farà piacere leggere in nuce i temi e le dinamiche che l’autrice svilupperà meglio in seguito. Si può dire che Mo Xiang Tong Xiu è molto brava a rimestare nel calderone dei temi e dei personaggi che le piacciono per proporli sempre in maniera diversa e accattivante. Per quanto mi riguarda, ormai leggerò anche il quarto volume, dove spero che il Luo Binghe eterobasico sia andato e perso per sempre nella sua dimensione piena di disagio e che ci sarà spazio solo per del sano divertimento.

Another example of The Power Of Many Episodes (TPOMY*); the latest mystery is solved, but it has had consequences for a lot of people, and the drama spends at least half an episode exploring them. I didn't realise how much of a missing stair Western condensed storytelling felt, until started to watch these long -form shows.
(*reading it out aloud I realise it sounds like the cuddly younger brother of a pharao)

A still can't make it justice (obviously), but this is one of those fights where the choreographer - and probably both the director and the storyboarder - added extra flair and had fun with it. We have the three goofy brothers protecting their big brother, red (wedding attendants) vs black (ninjas), a hot headed groom, and two-axes fight.
To be clear; the goal _isn't_ to kidnap the bride - the party just got in the way.

This is definitely the Peter Dinklage of C-drama land! Short, lots of acting chops, and versatile. Also, he's having a blast with his artist role here.
Yes, I know it would be better if I actually knew his name, but in this heatwave I'm just happy to be able to write anything.

Oh look! The three rabbits with conjoined ears! The figure exist in European heraldry, so it's interesting to see it in a Chinese context. Of course, since this drama is modern fiction production may have borrowed it, but it would be interesting to look up Chinese rabbit symbolism and...

The tension is _thick_ here! Props to the actors glaring each other to pieces! And their work is underscored by their positioning; note how the line formed by Banxia's arms is pointing straight to Xuanyue's head. I can imagine the director getting on set just to physically position the actor's body to be in the right spot.

Xuanyue and several others are trapped in a painting. Production has chosen to show it in expected ways; distant things are painted like an old school background set. But other things are more subtle; any character Xuanyue interacts with acts like a cartoon figure with limited and exagerated reactions. Must have been fun to execute!

It pains me to say this, but I can't comment on this segment, because I'd need to bleep out so many spoilers I'd sound like R2D2. To not make a weird gap in the collection; enjoy this scene where the set almost goes in a red and blue pallette - save for that jade phoenix down to the left. I wonder if it's a plot point 🤔

I like those door guardians! Too bad I don't recognise them - it's not like they give you deity flash cards when you study Chinese religion on master's level*. While this style is still live in China (unlike similar European styles in illuminated manuscripts) it's not a given any set designer can reproduce it. Of course it can be prints, but allow me to dream about a talented on-site painter, please!

That green stuff to the right isn't a start of a dream sequence - it's a reflection from my back yard. Looks like the trees are looking over my shoulder. I was to say something on how production is using frog perspective to enhance the stature of these dishevelled soldiers, thus enhancing the Patriotic Message, but now I'm more inclined to look for trolls, dragons, benevolent billionaires, and other fairytale creatures among the leaves.

That's a _very_ interesting hat! Given how hard costuming are leaning into Tang dynasty fashion, I wouldn't put it past a designer finding the original in a Tang manuscript and go "That one's fun! Let's use it on a character!" And then they just waited for the moment - or the hat - to drop.
