WildWords – Trembling Leaves

It begins in obscurity,
in the graying of the light,
when the lilac leaves tremble
one by one,
like tiny green drums
kissed by wet hands.

I watch them
and know something of prayer:
not certainty,
not brightness,
not the approaching thunder of answer,
but this—
the dimming light,
the damp touch,
the fragile rhythm 
of what remains alive
even when the whole world
seems to fade
at the edges.

And I,
quiet as the darkening earth,
learn again
that creation often prays
before it weeps,

that the body trembles
before the sorrow comes,
that even fear
can be a kind of listening

when the world wans
and the leaves begin
their soft percussion
under the subtle caress of rain.

#Wildfires of every size leave behind something known as a #BurnScar, or the area of land charred by flames and left devoid of vegetation.

"#Flooding and #DebrisFlows can happen with little warning in burn scars and most commonly occur during a heavy thunderstorm or major #rainstorm.

"'Rainfall that would normally be absorbed will run off extremely quickly after a #wildfire, as burned soil can be as water repellent as pavement. As a result, much less rainfall [than normal] is required to produce a #FlashFlood,' The National Weather Service (#NWS) said."

Rain is a Thing

So rain is still a thing. I mean this from a work point of view.

When Covid hit and we all started working from home full time, I learned to stop really worrying about rain. I didn’t have a commute anymore so I didn’t need to drive to and from work in the rain. I didn’t need to walk out to a parking lot in the rain. I didn’t even need to walk to the driveway. From the perspective of getting to and from work rain (and snow) stopped being a concern at all.

Now that we’re back in the office at least some of the time it’s a thing again and it sucks.

It is pouring rain today. I’m looking out the window and the parking lot looks like a small lake. I have to drive to a different building soon and that means I have to go out in this suck-fest of a rain storm and get drenched so that I can make the next meeting.

Working at home is so much better than working in the office. So much better.

Thus concludes this morning’s rant about rain. Thank you for your time and patience.

I was surprised to find that the Gobi Desert isn't just sand dunes and camels. Upon arrival here it rained buckets for a few days before clearing. The vastness creates a feeling of soul-searching isolation and calm.
