#PuertoRico governor signs law to recognize #fetus as human being as critics warn of consequences

SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico (AP) — "Puerto Rico’s governor on Thursday signed a bill that amends a law to recognize a fetus as a human being, a move doctors and legal experts warn will have deep ramifications for the U.S. Caribbean territory.
"The amendment was approved without #PublicHearings and amid concerns from opponents who warned it would unleash confusion and affect how doctors and pregnant or potentially #PregnantWomen are treated.
"The new law will lead to 'defensive health care,' warned Dr. Carlos Díaz Vélez, president of Puerto Rico’s College of Medical Surgeons."

#Maine #FamilyPlanning will close its primary care practice at end of October

Published October 1, 2025"Maine Family Planning says it cannot sustain its primary care practice beyond this month.
"The nonprofit says it faced an impossible decision after losing $2 million in #Medicaid funding under a new federal law. That means 800 patients in #Aroostook and #Hancock counties will now need to find new primary care providers.
"The law bans health providers who also offer #abortions from being reimbursed by Medicaid.
“ 'The cruel and dangerous law has put us in an impossible situation,' President and CEO George Hill said in a written statement. 'Discharging and turning away vulnerable patients strikes at the very heart of MFP’s reputation as a trusted community provider that has been able to serve patients of any means for more than 50 years.'
"As a result, #MaineFamilyPlanning says they've been providing primary care to Medicaid patients in #EllsworthME, #HoultonME, and #PresqueIsleME free of charge since July."

MEMPHIS, Tenn. (AP) — "Taylor Cagnacci moved from California to Tennessee with hopes of starting a new chapter in a state that touts a low cost of living and natural beauty.
"But she’s infuriated by Tennessee’s meager social services, which leave her and many other moms struggling in a state where abortion is banned with limited exceptions.
"'I was going to have my child no matter what, but for other women, that’s kind of a crappy situation that they put you in,' said Cagnacci, a 29-year-old Kingsport mom who relies on #Medicaid and a federally funded nutrition program. 'You have to have your child. But where’s the assistance afterward?'
"Tennessee has a porous safety net for mothers and young children, recent research and an analysis by The Associated Press found. It’s unknown how many women in the state have given birth because they didn’t have access to abortion, but it is clear that from the time a Tennessee woman gets pregnant, she faces greater obstacles to a #HealthyPregnancy, a #HealthyChild and a financially stable family than the average
"Like other states with strict abortion bans, Tennesseans of childbearing age are more likely to live in maternal care deserts and face overall doctor shortages. Women, infants and children are less likely to be enrolled in a government nutrition program known as #WIC. And Tennessee is one of only 10 states that hasn’t expanded Medicaid to a greater share of low-income families."
