  2. #WabanakiAlliance: Spring 2026 Update

    by #MaulianBryant, #PenobscotNation Citizen
    March 27, 2026

"We want to share some of the powerful stories highlighting our work since January. From the halls of the State House to #Maliseet homelands in #HoultonME, the movement for #Wabanaki #sovereignty is growing stronger every day.

    Advocacy in Action
We recently held a Lobby Day focused on two critical pieces of legislation:

    #LD785: Restoring tribal self-government.
#LD395: Ensuring #WabanakiNations have access to future federal laws.

The bills have since been amended and, while they do not represent the original form, the Chiefs agreed the amendment from the governor’s office provided for incremental but important movement forward.

    [...]

We remain committed to ensuring that people across our homelands now called Maine understand why it is vital that Wabanaki Nations are no longer treated differently than the other 570+ federally recognized tribes."

  3. #Maine #FamilyPlanning will close its primary care practice at end of October

    #MainePublic | By Patty Wight
    Published October 1, 2025

"Maine Family Planning says it cannot sustain its primary care practice beyond this month.

"The nonprofit says it faced an impossible decision after losing $2 million in #Medicaid funding under a new federal law. That means 800 patients in #Aroostook and #Hancock counties will now need to find new primary care providers.

"The law bans health providers who also offer #abortions from being reimbursed by Medicaid.

“ 'The cruel and dangerous law has put us in an impossible situation,' President and CEO George Hill said in a written statement. 'Discharging and turning away vulnerable patients strikes at the very heart of MFP’s reputation as a trusted community provider that has been able to serve patients of any means for more than 50 years.'

"As a result, #MaineFamilyPlanning says they've been providing primary care to Medicaid patients in #EllsworthME, #HoultonME, and #PresqueIsleME free of charge since July."

  4. This rally may seem small, but it's a big deal in that part of #Maine!

    #NoKings rally draws nearly 200 in #HoultonME

    by Kathleen Phalen Tomaselli

HOULTON, Maine — "Spanning from the former Walgreens in Houlton to Dominos, protesters of all ages on Saturday protested the Trump administration as part of the nationwide No Kings day.

"The Houlton event, with more than double the number of protesters at the first No Kings rally in June, is one of at least 37 that were planned across Maine. Joining the projected 2,600 events spanning the U.S., including such remote locations as Kodiak, Alaska, many in Houlton said they are fighting #authoritarianism together.

" 'I think America needs to re-learn what it means to be together right now. We are not,' said Gene Barnes of Houlton. 'Right now there is so much division and it’s so divisive.'

"By midday Saturday, No Kings organizers said that millions of Americans had already joined peaceful demonstrations in over 800 cities and towns, with another nearly 1,900 events planned later in the day across the country as part of the No Kings Day of Peaceful Action.

"Houlton organizers have been regularly holding rallies in support of the nation’s democracy in the historic downtown near the peace pole. But for Saturday’s event they decided to move to the larger, more visible location on North Street, said Mary Beth DiMarco, who works with a local grassroots group in organizing these events.

"As protestors waved signs and flags with messages to restore democracy and constitutional freedoms, four lanes of traffic were honking in support.

"Aviendha Adams, 8, who was leading a freedom chant on a megaphone during the rally, told her mother, Lavinia Lengele, the she is protesting, 'Because I am a girl and I don’t want boys and men bullying me and telling me what to do.'

"Many in the Houlton crowd were from the area, but people from Connecticut and Nova Scotia also joined the hour-long event.

" 'I want to make sure all the minority communities know they have a voice and people who are fighting for them,' said Jackson Adams, 16. 'Human rights are for everyone. They didn’t protest at Stonewall for me to quit fighting now.' "

  8. #Maine: #HoultonME rally against #Trump administration was one of 16 in Maine

by Kathleen Phalen Tomaselli, March 3, 2025

HOULTON, Maine — "Fifty-two people stood together in the rain on Saturday afternoon in downtown Houlton, wearing black armbands and carrying signs calling for the restoration of the nation.

"The rally was one of more than a dozen around the state on Saturday against the new administration of President Donald #Trump. Co-organizer Marilyn Roper said it was meant to draw attention to what demonstrators see as the recent loss of so many of the nation’s rights and the dismantling of government agencies. They also urged support for #Ukraine in its war against #Russia.

"Also over the weekend, demonstrators gathered at the State House in Augusta to protest the Maine Principal’s Association’s rules allowing transgender student athletes to participate in sports divisions that align with their actual gender, which have sparked the ongoing threats by the Trump administration to cut Maine’s federal funding.

"As the group of Houlton-area residents stood in silence displaying messages of restoration, passing drivers honked in solidarity. They specifically called for the restoration of law and order, decency, democracy, and the U.S. Agency for International Development [#USAID], among other things.

"During one stretch of time, the only vocal opposition came from a man driving a black pick-up truck, who yelled his disapproval out the window as he drove by.

"Roper is part of a statewide peace and justice group that co-organized the March 1 rallies in 16 communities, with one each in every Maine county. Some of the other demonstrations were in #BangorME, #SkowheganME, #CalaisME, #Damariscotta and #PortlandME.

"Several participating in the Houlton rally expressed their disgust and shame regarding Trump and Vice President J.D. Vance’s berating of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy in the Oval Office on Friday.

"Others bemoaned what they see as so many losses since the January inauguration.

"Houlton resident Bertrand Laurence said that even people who choose to not be involved are making a political statement.

"A core group of local organizers has been meeting regularly over the years to plan this and other activities related to issues of #SocialJustice and democracy.

"Following Saturday’s one-hour rally, organizers met at the #UnitarianUniversalist Church to plan future actions, including an upcoming postcard mailing campaign to the White House, said Roper.

"The postcards, slated for a March 15 mailing, will be addressed directly to Trump as a public expression of opposition to his behaviors and policies.

"'May the rallies in Maine and across the country bring about some halt in the destruction of our democracy and restoration of so much lost,' Roper said."
