Research - #RainBarrels and Other Household Stormwater Strategies Are Working — For Now.
May 5, 2026
Excerpt: " 'When we talk about #CircularEconomy, most people think about #recycling waste and materials. But the concept of circular economy also applies to water. Here we're talking about installing #rainwater #cisterns, reusing water from the sink to flush toilets and using water-efficient appliances. While those may seem like small steps at the individual level, we found that if they are widely adopted, they can have a significant collective impact,' said Fernanda Cruz Rios, PhD, an assistant professor in the College of Engineering, who was a co-author of the research. 'They help reduce demand on the municipal supply, and the energy needed to treat and distribute that water. But what we found was that these strategies offer a real double benefit. In areas like #PhiladelphiaPA and #CamdenME, that are particularly vulnerable due to their proximity to large bodies of water, we were able to see a meaningful reduction in flooding volumes when circular water strategies were adopted.'
"Despite the ongoing compliance efforts, the cities of Philadelphia and Camden have around 16 billion gallons of combined #sewer overflow, according to reports from their respective water utilities.
"Over the last two and a half decades, Camden has established a stormwater management plan, including decentralized strategies, an upgrade to #stormwater infrastructure and storm water management modeling. To understand the overall impact of these efforts, in hopes of applying findings to other vulnerable urban areas, the Drexel team created a computer model of stormwater movement using data from Cramer Hill, a neighborhood of Camden in the state’s 'coastal hazard zone' that is highly susceptible to tidal and storm-surge flooding.
"The researchers structured the model so that it could quantify the distinct effects of outdoor strategies (cisterns and rain barrels) and indoor strategies — efficient fixtures and reusing sink wash water (#greywater) for toilet flushing. It simulated and measured the effect of 16 different combinations of strategies, ranging from rain barrels of different sizes, to varying levels of adoption of water-efficient fixtures and greywater reuse."Each scenario was simulated using precipitation and tidal data from 2014 as a baseline and flooding measurements projected at locations across the neighborhood and at five stormwater outfall areas that contribute to combined sewer overflow discharges into the #DelawareRiver.
The results show that the combination of retrofitting homes with #WaterEfficientFixtures as well as installing rain barrels and practicing greywater reuse, when adopted by 75% of households, could reduce the volume of combined sewer overflows by as much as 11% and the volume of #floodwaters by up to 13%.
" 'This finding is an important and encouraging piece of information for municipalities that are facing similar challenges,' Marques said. 'Although broad adoption of these measures can be challenging to achieve, confirmation of its effectiveness may help to make the case.' "

#CamdenME - Mid-Season Herb Walk with Denise DeSpirito
July 28 @ 12:00 pm - 1:00 pm
"Please join Denise DeSpirito for a mid-season herb garden tour to see what is growing. A great way to learn plants is to see them in each phase of their growth. In this mid-season herb garden walk we will talk about plants in bloom that are catching our eye, what to gather now and how to collect and preserve it for the year ahead. This talk takes place entirely in the herb garden and participants are welcome to bring questions about their own gardens.
Attendance is free for members; $10 for non-members.
Merryspring is your community nature center offering walking trails, cultivated gardens, wildlife, and ecology and horticulture educational programs all year round. The park is located at the end of Conway Road, just off of Route 1 in Camden behind Hannaford Shopping Plaza."

#CamdenME - #MushroomForaging Workshop with Greg Marley
July 25 @ 9:00 am - 3:00 pm
Cost is $70 for Merryspring members; $80 for non-members
Pre-registration is required"Greg Marley will lead an outdoor presentation on Foraging Edible and Medicinal Mushrooms at Merryspring Nature Center on Saturday, July 25 from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.
Everyone is fascinated by wild mushrooms. From foraging and eating, to medicinal use and the use of psychedelics to improve creativity and address depression. The only thing standing in the way is acquiring the knowledge and confidence to tell the good mushrooms from those that can sicken you. The good news is that there are a handful of common, easily identified, great edibles or medicinals that can satisfy most peoples hunger for mushrooms. Maine is home to a number of world-class edible mushrooms easily found as you enjoy a walk through the woods and fields.
This day-long class helps to build the basic knowledge needed to identify common mushrooms and to begin a lifetime of wild mushrooming. The class will combine indoor lecture and outdoor experience in the forest to explore identification features, ecology and the seasonal occurrence of mushrooms. We will look at edible as well as common poisonous mushrooms and may end the day by cooking some of the mushrooms we find. Learn a few common edible and medicinal mushrooms and build skills to identify more."

#CamdenME - #Workshop – #NeedleFelted Mushrooms with Sam Coon
June 6 @ 10:00 am - 12:00 pm
Ages 12+
Class fee: $27 Members, $30 Non-Members
Materials fee: $5 paid to instructor
Beginner+To Register, please call (207) 236-2239. Registration fees are non-refundable. Children under age 18 must be accompanied by an adult.3
Description:
"Whether used as a lovely sculpted display, an ornament, or even as a pincushion, needle felted mushrooms are a fun project to create for all levels: those starting out, and those already familiar with the process. Class instruction will include wool types used, needle safety precautions and proper use, how to create a form using core wool, and adding exterior details with #DyedWool. Examples will be provided, such as fly agarics, boletes, chanterelles, and russulas. Students will be able to complete 1-2 mushrooms by the end of the class session, depending on the size and details.
"Sam Coon is a self-taught #FiberArtist, and has been making felt since being introduced to both needle felting and wet felting in 2009.
"Much of her inspiration is gleaned from the natural environment, particularly patterns, colors, and shapes. From there, various types of items are created including vessels, wall art pieces, sculptures, jewelry, and wearable felted items that are nuno felted. In these art forms, she uses wool fibers that have not been spun or woven, such as Merino or Corriedale. In many instances, fabric, silk and viscose fibers are incorporated to change the textural quality of the felt and for added dimension.
"What particularly stands out the most to her, when working with wool to make felt, is that the sculptural qualities of wool are impressive, making creative possibilities seemingly endless. Along with working in the studio, she also regularly teaches needle and wet felting classes at varying locations and age groups.
"This workshop is generously co-sponsored by Camden Riverhouse Hotel.
"#Merryspring is your community nature center offering #WalkingTrails, cultivated #gardens, #wildlife, and #ecology and #horticulture educational programs all year round. The park is located at the end of Conway Road, just off of Route 1 in Camden behind Hannaford Shopping Plaza."
