  1. I think the coincidenceS that allow for the gorgeous solar eclipses we see are underappreciated. Our moon is very large compared to other moons in our solar system around the rocky planets (#1).

And not only is the moon almost exactly the same size as the sun in the sky (#2), it appears precisely that size NOW, when us humans can appreciate it. The moon is moving away from the Earth, so millions of years ago, pre *Homo sapiens*, the moon would've appeared bigger and blocked the sun even more. No ring of fire (#3).

This absolutely stunning set of cosmic coincidences just, I dunno...almost makes me believe in a god or superpowerful aliens (same thing I guess) or something. It's just too damn crazy.

  2. The Artemis photos of the solar eclipse they got to see reminded me of our trip to New Brunswick a couple years ago to shoot the eclipse here on earth. I'm still super happy with this photo, and what a cool experience that was.!

  3. "Using a large acoustic dataset from participatory science, we quantified how #birds changed their vocalizations in response to the 2023 annular and 2024 total eclipses in North America. During the total #eclipse, most species vocalized less, but nocturnal and large-eyed species vocalized more."

  4. "We hypothesized that the calling behavior of animals during the eclipse would mimic periods of low light, such as post-dusk, and that a measurable shift in soundscape activity would occur during the eclipse period. Our results showed significant variation in some metrics between days, with the highest biophonic activity observed on the day of the eclipse. We did not find differences between the time of the eclipse and the days before and after with respect to acoustic complexity."

  5. "Compiling more than 10,000 community observations and artificial intelligence analyses of nearly 100,000 vocalizations, we found that bird behavior was substantially affected by these few minutes of unexpected afternoon darkness."

  6. This was totality — photographed from my parents’ yard in Southern Illinois during the April 8, 2024 eclipse.

The sun’s corona was blazing, and we could even see flares along the edge.

A moment of awe, silence, and cosmic perspective.

  7. ⏪ Blog rewind: “Eclipse So Good” heliomass.com/posts/2407-eclip

For some reason I was thinking about this today, so I thought I’d repost it 🌑

  8. If you spent last Wednesday morning in bed, you missed a beautiful view! This lovely shot of the partial #LunarEclipse was taken by #mpsgoettingen scientist Luca Teriaca from #Göttingen on Sept. 18th at 4.44 AM (CEST). Thanks for sharing! #Eclipse2024 #Moon

  9. #Eclipse2024 #Corona

Finally had some time to process my photos of the polarized solar corona during the 2024-4-8 total eclipse. Shown here in false colour, the linear polarization angle is encoded into colour.
The corona's polarization is perpendicular to the radius.

From 12 colour photos taken between 15:27:46 and 15:29:28 with f/5.6; ISO-250; f = 128 mm; four exposure times 1/50, 1/5, 1, 2.5 sec. with three polarizations each: vertical (zenith toward top of image), +60°, et -60°.

  10. #ISONewEngland’s profit model is based on a scarcity mindset, which works against abundant renewables and conservation. Exhibit A is ISO’s opposition to mentioning #DemandResponse as a tool to manage #eclipse2024.

For the rest of my term as a member of the #ConsumerLiaisonGroup I will be emphasizing an #abundancemindset to grow a resilient and healthy grid for all.

  11. @flyingsquirrel Thanks. That makes me feel slightly better, because we were never going to hang out at the side of the road near Elmira for 3 hours.

I wax actually surprised at how many people we saw at the side of the road. I speculate that making a relatively small effort for the total eclipse primed people to get out for the aurora.

  12. As we enjoy auroras driven from the maximum of the current solar cycle, I'd like to share experiences from Glitches.VR on another awe-inspiring, solar-related phenomenon this year! 💚 #Eclipse2024

  13. Oh man... I was feeling so fortunate to see the total eclipse last month. Now I am intensely jealous of people back home seeing such vibrant Aurora Australis.

  14. I also wrote this short story, inspired by the eclipse. A cozy little scifi, about coming home. 600 words:

It's hot off the presses, so apologies for any typos or confusion. Politely worded feedback is appreciated!
