I’ve read more posts mentioning #jamesdobson- it’s awful to hear how many families fell victim to his advocacy of abuse. I work with young families every day and I know how much power an authoritative voice holds when you’re feeling helpless or at your wits end. I feel fortunate that my family didn’t fall 100%. White Christian nationalists imagine that they have a "mission" and a "calling" to discipline all the rest of us, to impose THEIR "order" on all of us.

If that discipline fails to create the order these Christians imagine they are "called" to create in society — if we "rebel" and refuse to "submit" to "God" — then the next step is coercion and punishment.

It's entirely based on coercion from the outset.

Train up a child in the way he should go; spare the rod and spoil the child: what Dobson and his followers call "discipline" is all about establishing coercion from the very earliest days of childhood, with the goal of extending that coercion to all of society.

James Dobson, the evangelical Christian leader and child psychologist who advised Presidents Trump, Reagan, H.W. Bush and W. Bush and founded the ministry Focus on the Family, has died at age 89. Dobson advocated strict parental authority and corporal punishment and was a hard-liner on LGBTQ+ issues and abortion. In 2010, his Family Research Council was formally designated as a hate group by the Southern Poverty Law Center for "anti-gay propaganda."
