"Do those pantries have the supply to meet new demand? The short answer is: they’re trying.

" 'There isn’t a program that can replace that,' Blanchard, Catholic Charities’ director of hunger and relief services, said. 'But we’re best suited to do the most good and hit as much need as possible.'

"Food pantries across Maine are already feeling a squeeze levied by cuts to several key #USDA programs earlier this year. In March, the federal government cut approximately $500 million in funding from The Emergency Food Assistance Program (#TEFAP) which provides American-grown food bought by the USDA.

"The Trump administration also ended the #LocalFood Purchase Assistance Cooperative Agreement Program, which gave money to states to purchase locally produced food that would then be distributed to food banks.

" 'Before we were getting maybe four or five cases of something and now we’re getting only maybe one case,' said Rena Kearney, a volunteer at the Mars Hill Community Cupboard — which serves around 14 families weekly. 'If you get one case of string beans, that’s got 24 cans in it, it doesn’t go very far.' "

"The Maine Department of Health and Human Services is urging federal food assistance recipients in Maine to change the PINs on their #EBT cards and check for fraudulent activity.

"So far this week, about 300 households who rely on the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, or SNAP, have lost $76,000 in benefits in a multi-state theft operation. The Maine Department of Health and Human Services said Thursday that the thieves appear to be using the electronic benefit transfer cards, or EBT cards, at point-of-sale terminals in other states.

"Maine is one of several states that has been hit by the theft operation targeting SNAP, which is formerly known as food stamps. But DHHS officials warned that the number of affected households could rise as the scale of the operation becomes clearer.

" 'This incident appears to be the result of large-scale theft involving stolen card numbers and PINs — sometimes referred to as ‘cloning’ — rather than a localized skimming device,' Ian Yaffe, director of the DHHS Office for Family Independence, said in a statement. 'While this type of fraud and theft have occurred in other states, this is the first time we have seen it at this scale in Maine. We are working with the federal government and our EBT vendor, Fidelity Information Services, to do all we can to prevent further theft of benefits from Maine people who rely on SNAP to supplement their monthly food budget.'

"More than 170,000 Maine residents currently receive SNAP benefits.

"DHHS officials said #FederalRules prohibit the state from replacing stolen SNAP money. That means affected households will have to wait until next month to receive additional benefits. In the meantime, DHHS said it is is working to connect those households with #FoodPantries or other community groups to help them bridge the gap until next month. The office said it is proactively contacting affected households, whenever possible.

"But DHHS officials are urging all SNAP recipients to take steps on their own to strengthen protections on their accounts.

Those steps include:

- Immediately changing the PIN on their EBT card and avoiding easy-to-guess numbers, such as 1234 or birthdays.
- Activating the lock/unlock feature to temporarily block access to benefits when not in use.
- Blocking out-of-state or online transactions.
- Regularly reviewing activity on their accounts.

"Those changes can be made online at the #PinetreeCard website or by using the #ebtEDGE app for mobile phones. Individuals who need assistance using the website or app can call Fidelity Information Services at 1-800-477-7428."

"Four days a week, Maile Auterson and one of her employees drive hundreds of miles across Kansas, Missouri and Arkansas to deliver fresh produce to #FoodDeserts.

"Auterson's nonprofit, Springfield #CommunityGardens, helps #UnderservedSchools, #FoodPantries and senior centers. One center in Ava, #Missouri, is the only place for many where they can get a hot meal.

"Springfield Community Gardens is one of many organizations that relied on grants from the United States Department of Agriculture to distribute produce to schools and low-income communities through two pandemic-era federal programs. They provided about $1 billion in funding to schools and food banks to buy food directly from local farms, ranchers and producers.

"But in March, the USDA abruptly canceled the programs, calling the decision a 'return to long-term, fiscally responsible initiatives.'

"Now, Auterson says, 'some of the most vulnerable people' are without adequate access to food, including children and #SeniorCitizens."

#CommunityGarden started as Utah teen's service project, now helps feed growing number in need

MILLCREEK, #Utah — "As Utahns are dealing with growing food insecurity, one community garden in #MillcreekUT is trying to be part of the solution.

"Esther's Garden, next to Congregation Kol Ami, started as a teenager's service project. Setareh Khadjenoury did it in 2013 during her Bat Mitzvah. It’s a way to honor her mother’s Jewish and father’s Persian heritage. Her family has continued to grow the garden ever since.

" 'I always feel so peaceful when I come here,' said Kara Rasmussen, who volunteers at the garden. 'It always feels like an opportunity for connection, and growth — both spiritual and with plants.'

"They grow fruits and vegetables of all kinds and sizes, using sustainable farming to bridge cultures.

"The garden’s motto is 'fresh food for anyone who needs it,' so people can pick up anything they like or need, and the produce is also donated to local organizations and #FoodPantries to help them keep up with the growing demand of people in need.

" 'I think it’s so important to have initiatives like this to help bring that extra nutrition to families in need,' said Rasmussen."

New England schools and food programs take ‘devastating’ hit after #USDAFundingCuts

The more than $1 billion in federal funding helped #schools, #ChildCare programs, and #FoodPantries in 40 states to buy produce and other items from local farmers.

"In October, the USDA announced $1.7 billion for states and #tribal governments to purchase #locally and #regionally produced foods for #EmergencyFoodAssistance, including free meals for schools and child-care programs.

"That funding included $1.2 billion to support local food purchases with schools, child-care facilities, food banks, and other institutions, according to the USDA. School meal programs would get $500 million to make food purchases, and states, territories, and #TribalNations would receive another $500 million. Child-care facilities were supposed to get $200 million, the USDA said.

"The money earmarked for food banks, schools, and child-care facilities was meant to help them meet the needs of their recipients and help ensure they had access to healthy foods, according to the USDA at the time."
