#Blackwater Successor Hunts #Immigrants for #ICE
#ConstellisHoldings, which traces its roots to #ErikPrince’s #mercenary firm Blackwater, landed an ICE contract as a #BountyHunter.by Sam Biddle
January 3 2026Excerpt: "#Constellis was formed in 2014 through the merger of #Academi, previously known as Blackwater, and #TripleCanopy, a rival mercenary contractor. The combined companies and their subsidiaries have reaped billions from contracts for guarding foreign military installations, embassies, and domestic properties, along with work for the Department of Homeland Security [#DHS] and U.S. spy agencies.
"Blackwater, founded in 1997 by Erik Prince, renamed itself multiple times over the years after it sparked international scandal for its violent work in #Iraq. In 2007, Blackwater #mercenaries massacred 14 #civilians in #Baghdad; several of its contractors serving prison sentences for the killings were pardoned by President Donald #Trump in 2020."Prince resigned as CEO of Blackwater in 2009, and Constellis says it has no relationship with him.
"Though there are no ties between them, Constellis’s move to serve as a bounty hunter for ICE aligns with Prince’s reported interest in privatizing immigration enforcement.
"The government has so far paid Constellis $1.5 million, with the potential for the total to grow to more than $113 million.
"In February, Politico reported that Prince — a longtime and steadfast Trump ally — was among a group of military contractors who urged the federal government to employ a '#SkipTracingTeam' and 'bounty program which provides a cash reward' to incentivize the rapid tracking of immigrants. The proposal suggested that, due to a lack of federal manpower, ICE should deputize private citizens to help track down immigrants."

Choosing to let kids go hungry
by Judd Legum, Rebecca Crosby, and Noel Sims
Oct 29, 2025"The official website of the U.S. Department of Agriculture (#USDA) claims that on November 1, the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) will run out of funding. The USDA asserts that Democrats are blocking funding to secure 'health care for illegal immigrants' and funding for 'gender mutilation procedures.'
"All of these claims are false.
"Around 42 million Americans — including 20 million children — rely on the SNAP program to avoid going hungry.
"But 'the well' has not 'run dry' on SNAP. The program has a reserve of about $6 billion that could fully fund SNAP for several more weeks. The USDA’s current position is that these funds 'are not legally available to cover regular benefits' and can only be used to provide nutrition assistance in response to a national disaster or other emergency.
"This, however, directly contradicts guidance that the USDA issued on September 30 which explicitly states that contingency funds can be used for regular benefits (emphasis added):
" 'In addition, Congressional intent is evident that SNAP’s operations should continue since the program has been provided with multi-year contingency funds that can be used for State Administrative Expenses to ensure that the State can also continue operations during a Federal Government shutdown. These multi-year contingency funds are also available to fund participant benefits in the event that a lapse occurs in the middle of the fiscal year.'
"This guidance has been removed from the USDA website now that the Trump administration has decided that withholding the funds is politically advantageous."

No Escape: #ClimateChange is a growing threat to people already fleeing war
12 November 2024
"People forced to flee war, violence and persecution are increasingly finding themselves on the front line of the global climate crisis, a new report warns, exposing them to a lethal combination of threats but without the funding and support to adapt.
"The report, released today by #UNHCR, the #UNRefugeeAgency, in collaboration with 13 expert organizations, research institutions and refugee-led groups, uses the latest data to show how climate shocks are interacting with conflict, pushing those who are already in danger into even more dire situations.
"Of the more than 120 million forcibly #displaced worldwide, three-quarters live in countries heavily impacted by climate change. Half are in places affected by both conflict and serious climate hazards, such as #Ethiopia, #Haiti, #Myanmar, #Somalia, #Sudan and #Syria.
"According to the report – No Escape: On the Frontlines of Climate Change, Conflict and #ForcedDisplacement – by 2040 the number of countries facing extreme climate-related hazards is expected to rise from 3 to 65, the vast majority of which host displaced people. Similarly, most refugee settlements and camps are projected to experience twice as many days of dangerous heat by 2050.
“ 'For the world’s most vulnerable people, climate change is a harsh reality that profoundly affects their lives,' said UN High Commissioner for Refugees, #FilippoGrandi. 'The climate crisis is driving displacement in regions already hosting large numbers of people uprooted by conflict and insecurity, compounding their plight and leaving them with nowhere safe to go.'
"For example, the devastating conflict in Sudan has forced millions of people to flee, including 700,000 who have crossed into #Chad, which has hosted refugees for decades and yet is one of the countries most exposed to climate change. At the same time, many who fled the fighting but remained in Sudan are at risk of further displacement because of #SevereFlooding that has blighted the country.
"Similarly, 72 per cent of #Myanmar’s refugees have sought safety in #Bangladesh, where natural hazards such as #cyclones and #flooding, are classified as extreme.
" 'In our region, where so many people have been displaced for so many years, we see the effects of climate change before our very eyes,' said #GraceDorong, a #ClimateActivist and former refugee living in #SouthSudan. 'I hope the voices of the people in this report help decision-makers to understand that if not addressed, forced displacement – and the multiplying effect of climate change – will get worse. But if they listen to us, we can be part of the solution, too.' "

Climate Refugees: The Human Face of #EnvironmentalDisplacement
By Marco Kopinke, M.Sc.
February 20, 2025"In recent years, the world has witnessed a dramatic surge in the number of people #displaced due to climate-related #NaturalDisasters. In 2022 alone, approximately 36.2 million individuals were forced to leave their homes as a direct result of #environmental challenges linked to #ClimateChange. This marked a significant increase compared to previous years, highlighting an alarming trend that is reshaping lives and communities across the globe. The stark reality is that these numbers are not just statistics; they represent families torn apart, livelihoods disrupted, and futures uncertain. As we continue to see the effects of climate change intensify, the number of #ClimateRefugees is expected to rise, creating a #humanitarian challenge that requires immediate attention and action.
"Looking ahead, the projections paint an even grimmer picture. By the year 2050, it is estimated that up to 1.2 billion people could be displaced worldwide due to the impacts of climate change and natural disasters. This staggering figure underscores the urgency of addressing the root causes of climate-induced displacement. It is crucial to understand that these projections are not mere forecasts but a call to action for governments, organizations, and individuals to mitigate the factors contributing to such mass displacement. The potential scale of this crisis demands a coordinated global response to ensure that those affected are provided with the necessary support and resources to rebuild their lives."

#MAGA senator slams illegal immigrants as 'criminals' — then steps in to free ICE detainee
Jennifer Bowers Bahney
July 31, 2025 3:54PM ET"MAGA Sen. #JohnKennedy (R-LA), who has been a fervent supporter of Immigration and Customs Enforcement efforts to deport undocumented migrants, reversed course when it came to one of his constituents, according to The New York Times.
"Kennedy told Fox News on July 17, 'If you’re in our country illegally, you’re a criminal. Illegal immigration is illegal, duh.'
"And yet, the senator's office recently asked the Department of Homeland Security to release 25-year-old #PaolaClouatre after two months in a #Louisiana #DetentionCenter, the report said.
"Clouatre is a Mexican citizen and mother of two young children who is married to a U.S. #MarineCorps #veteran.
" 'In an email on Tuesday morning, Christy Tate, the constituent services representative in Mr. Kennedy’s office, wrote to Mr. Clouatre to confirm that his wife had been released from ICE custody after her office had made a formal request to the federal agency,' the report said.
"The email read in part, 'I am so happy for you and your family. We will continue to keep you, your family and others that are experiencing the same issues in our prayers.' [Because of you, Mr. Kennedy!!!]
"Reporter Pooja Salhotra wrote that Clouatre came to the United States as a teenager 'to seek asylum with her mother and brother.' After her mother failed to show up for a court hearing in California in 2018, a judge issued a deportation order against the teen.
"Now estranged from her mother, Clouatre said she didn't learn of the deportation order until earlier this year 'when she was already in the process of applying for a #greencard, the report said.
"She was detained by ICE agents on May 27 shortly after giving birth, and while attending a 'routine appointment in New Orleans related to her application for a green card and #PermanentResident status,' according to the report.
"During her incarceration, Clouatre's husband brought the couple's 9-week-old baby to the jail so she could breastfeed. [How Christian of them!] She is currently wearing an ankle monitor and awaiting a court date for her immigration proceedings."

#Teen #artists portrayed their lives — some adults didn't want to see the full picture
Elizabeth Blair
July 28, 2025Excerpt: "The #protesters in the mural hold signs that read 'The climate is changing, why aren't we?' 'No human is illegal,' 'Protect kids, not guns' and '#FreePalestine.'
"Mary Beth Tinker was impressed when she saw the mural on her way to speak about #freespeech. She said she "encouraged the students because they were making this beautiful mural about issues that they cared about. One of the issues featured was Free Palestine. And that's an issue that I care about.'
"Tinker has a long history of advocating for free speech. In 1965, when she was an eighth-grader in Iowa, she and other students were suspended for wearing black armbands to school to protest the #VietnamWar. The incident led to the Supreme Court case Tinker v. Des Moines, in which a majority court ruled that students do not 'shed their constitutional rights to freedom of speech or expression at the schoolhouse gate.'
"Tinker said she often tells students, 'You always can be proud of speaking up about the things that you really believe in because that's a life of integrity.'
Smithsonian officials were not impressed
"Flair Doherty said a Smithsonian staff member approached her and the other teen artists and told them she believed the 'Free Palestine' slogan was 'antisemitic and hateful.' Doherty, who is Jewish, said she told her she disagreed, 'We talked for maybe three minutes and did not really get anywhere.'
" 'We went over the next day and it was completely covered in tarps,' said 18-year-old artist Léda Pelton, who had not yet finished her section of the mural about cars and college acceptance.
"Pelton said Smithsonian officials told them they covered it up because they were 'afraid that somebody was going to walk by and see 'Free Palestine' on our mural and get mad and hurt us. And I'm like, 'maybe we are not the problem in that situation.' "

#Maine groups launch #EmergencyFund to support #immigrants and #TransPeople
Maine Public | By Ari Snider
Published July 16, 2025"Several Maine organizations are launching a rapid response fund to support immigrants and trans people in the state who they say are facing increased threats under the #Trump Administration.
"The #MaineSolidarityFund will help cover the cost of legal representation and bond payments for immigrants in #ICEDetention, and provide support to their families.
"#MarpheenChann, executive director of the Cambodian community group #KhmerMaine, believes this approach will be more effective than individual fundraisers for each case.
" 'Our communities can come together to raise money and pool resources, and collectively make sure that our community members are taken care of as they're navigating these very difficult times,' Chann said.
"#KrisPitts, co-executive director of #MaineTransNet, said the fund will help cover #LegalFees in harassment cases, and #GenderAffirmingCare not covered by insurance. Pitts said there's a growing need for support as the Trump administration pursues a number of policies targeting transgender Americans.
" 'For our trans and #nonbinary community members, particularly, the sense of urgency, I think, is there in a way that it wasn't before,' Pitts said.
"Other groups involved in the effort include #PresenteMaine, #GatewayCommunityServicesMaine, and the #CommunityOrganizingAlliance.
"The goal is to raise $1 million over the next year and a half."

New Trump memo ends bond releases for some, could keep migrants detained for years
Story by Angeline McCall, July 15, 2025
"A new Trump administration memo calls to eliminate bond releases for immigrants who crossed the border without authorization, potentially keeping them in Immigration and Customs Enforcement detention for years while their cases progress through the immigration system, according to advocates who work with detained immigrants.
"The policy change means immigrants who entered the country without authorization will no longer be eligible for bond releases and must remain in custody until their cases are resolved — a process that can take years.
" 'We found out this morning that it was happening,' said Andrea Loya, Executive Director of Casa de Paz, an organization that assists people released from ICE custody.
"The memo represents a significant shift from previous practices where many immigrants could be released on bond while awaiting their immigration hearings. Loya said her organization currently sees people released after stays ranging from just a few weeks to over a year, depending on their case complexity, access to legal representation and financial resources.
"Under the new policy, those released on bond will no longer be able to 'go back home' to their families and 'establish some sort of normalcy again and keep fighting for their cases,' Loya said.
"The extended detention periods could stretch for years, according to Loya, who noted that 'some of these people will fight for years because they will not be going back home' due to safety concerns in their countries of origin.
" 'What I don't think a lot of people understand is that some of these people, going back to their home countries is a literal death sentence,' she said.
"Loya characterized the policy as a strategy to pressure immigrants to abandon their legal cases.
" 'So this is definitely a measure to push people to get back and sign a deportation order or push them into just giving up and going back to whatever home country means,' she said.
"The policy change aligns with broader Trump administration immigration enforcement priorities. The One #BigBeautifulBillAct allocates $45 billion to expand #ICEDetention capacity to 100,000 beds, roughly double the current capacity.
"Loya described the detention system as 'monetized' and 'privatized,' suggesting the new policy serves multiple purposes for the administration.
" 'I think it's a push to make people give up in their cases and also, without the understanding that some people can't give up because going back to their home countries is a death sentence,' she said."

#Volunteers flock to #ImmigrationCourts to support #migrants arrested in the hallways
By MARTHA BELLISLE, CEDAR ATTANASIO and COLLEEN SLEVIN
Updated 8:38 AM EDT, July 20, 2025SEATTLE (AP) — "After a Seattle immigration judge dismissed the deportation case against a Colombian man — exposing him to expedited removal — three people sat with him in the back of the courtroom, taking his car keys for #SafeKeeping, helping him memorize phone numbers and gathering the names of family members who needed to be notified.
"When Judge Brett Parchert asked why they were doing that in court, the volunteers said Immigration and Custom Enforcement officers were outside the door, waiting to take the man into custody, so this was their only chance to help him get his things in order. '#ICE is in the waiting room?' the judge asked.
"As the #MassDeportation campaign of President Donald #Trump focuses on cities and states led by Democrats and unleashes fear among asylum-seekers and immigrants, their legal defenders sued this week, seeking class-action protections against the arrests outside immigration court hearings. Meanwhile, these volunteers are taking action.
"A diverse group — #FaithLeaders, #CollegeStudents, #grandmothers, #retired #lawyers and #professors — has been showing up at immigration courts across the nation to escort immigrants at risk of being detained for deportation by masked ICE officials. They’re giving families moral and logistical support, and bearing witness as the people are taken away.
"The #NorthwestImmigrantRightsProject was inundated by so many community members wanting to help that they made a volunteer training video, created '#KnowYourRights' sheets in several languages and started a Google sheet where people sign up for shifts, said Stephanie Gai, a staff attorney with the Seattle-based legal services non-profit.
" 'We could not do it without them,' Gai said. 'Some volunteers request time off work so they can come in and help.'
"Robby Rohr, a retired non-profit director said she volunteers regularly.
" 'Being here makes people feel they are remembered and recognized,' she said 'It’s such a bureaucratic and confusing process. We try to help them through it.' "
