From #Datacenters to #DetentionCenters. We don't need either!!! And of course, just like the proposed datacenter project in #SanfordME, there's SECRECY!!! Sneaky, sneaky!
#ICE’s purchases for big detention centers are marked by secrecy, frustrating towns
By HEATHER HOLLINGSWORTH and MORGAN LEE
Updated 11:54 AM EST, February 21, 2026Excerpt: SOCORRO, Texas (AP) — "In a Texas town at the edge of the #Rio rande and a tall metal border wall, rumors swirled that federal immigration officials wanted to purchase three hulking warehouses to transform into a detention center.
"As local officials scrambled to find out what was happening, a deed was filed showing the Department of Homeland Security had already inked a $122.8 million deal for the 826,000-square-foot (76,738-square-meter) warehouses in Socorro, a bedroom community of 40,000 people outside #ElPaso.
" 'Nobody from the federal government bothered to pick up the phone or even send us any type of correspondence letting us know what’s about to take place,' said Rudy Cruz Jr., the mayor of the predominantly #Hispanic town of low-slung ranch homes and trailer parks, where orchards and irrigation ditches share the landscape with strip malls, truck stops, recycling plants and distribution warehouses.
"Socorro is among at least 20 communities with large warehouses across the U.S. that have become stealth targets for Immigration and Customs Enforcement’s $45-billion expansion of detention centers.
"As public support for the agency and President Donald #Trump’s #ImmigrationCrackdown sags, communities are objecting to mass detentions and raising concerns that the facilities could strain water supplies and other services while reducing local tax revenue. In many cases, mayors, county commissioners, governors and members of Congress learned about ICE’s ambitions only after the agency bought or leased space for detainees, leading to shock and frustration even in areas that have backed Trump.
" 'I just feel,' said Cruz, whose wife was born in Mexico, 'that they do these things in silence so that they don’t get opposition.' "

By STEVE PEOPLES
Updated 10:09 PM EST, January 28, 2026NEW YORK (AP) — "No longer confined to the partisans and #activists, the fierce backlash against Donald Trump’s immigration crackdown has begun to break out across American culture, spanning the worlds of business, sports and entertainment.
"#BruceSpringsteen released a new song Wednesday that slammed 'Trump’s federal #thugs.' OpenAI chief executive Sam Altman told employees that 'what’s happening with ICE is going too far,' referring to Immigration and Customs Enforcement. And lifestyle icon #MarthaStewart lamented that 'we can be attacked and even killed.'
" 'Things must and have to change quickly and peacefully,' Stewart wrote to her 2.9 million Instagram followers this week.
"A little more than one year into his second term, Trump is facing a broad cultural revolt that threatens to undermine his signature domestic priority, the Republican Party’s grip on power and his own political strength ahead of the midterm elections."

Breaking News! Federal Agent Shoots Woman Amid #Minneapolis Crackdown
The person was killed, federal authorities said. Gov. Tim Walz asked for calm as protesters gathered.Julie Bosman, Mitch Smith and Dan Simmons, Jan. 7, 2026, 12:04 p.m. ET
"A federal immigration officer shot and killed a person in Minneapolis on Wednesday during an enforcement operation, the Department of Homeland Security said.
"The shooting came as the Trump administration intensified a promised crackdown on illegal immigration in Minnesota.
"The office of Senator Tina Smith, Democrat of Minnesota, described the person who was shot as the wife of a prominent #activist, and Representative Ilhan Omar, a Democrat whose congressional district includes the shooting scene, described the person as a '#LegalObserver.'
"Several of the state’s top Democrats called on federal immigration agents to leave the city, accusing them of sowing chaos. Federal officials have defended the crackdown in Minneapolis as a necessary response to illegal immigration and widespread fraud in state social service systems.
"Gov. #TimWalz of #Minnesota said in a statement that he had been informed of the shooting involving U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement, which took place in a residential neighborhood in South Minneapolis. He asked people to remain calm.
"Homeland Security officials said the shooting happened as agents were conducting “targeted operations” and were confronted by protesters.
"Tricia McLaughlin, a spokeswoman for #DHS, said in a statement that a woman had 'weaponized her vehicle, attempting to run over our law enforcement officers in an attempt to kill them.' [BULLSHIT!!!]
"The federal government’s description of the encounter could not immediately be verified independently."

#ImmigrationCrackdown inspires uniquely #Chicago pushback that’s now a model for other cities
By SOPHIA TAREEN and CHRISTINE FERNANDO, November 16, 2025
CHICAGO (AP) — "Baltazar Enriquez starts most mornings with street patrols, leaving his home in Chicago’s #LittleVillage on foot or by car to find immigration agents that have repeatedly targeted his largely Mexican neighborhood.
"Wearing an orange whistle around his neck, the activist broadcasts his plans on Facebook.
" 'We don’t know if they’re going to come back. All we know is we’ve got to get ready,' he tells thousands of followers. 'Give us any tips if you see any suspicious cars.'
"Moments later, his phone buzzes.
"As an unprecedented immigration crackdown enters a third month, a growing number of Chicago residents are fighting back against what they deem a racist and aggressive overreach of the federal government. The Democratic stronghold’s response has tapped established activists and everyday residents from wealthy suburbs to working class neighborhoods.
"They say their efforts — #CommunityPatrols, #RapidResponders, #SchoolEscorts, vendor buyouts, #HonkingHorns and #BlowingWhistles — are a uniquely Chicago response that other cities President Donald #Trump has targeted for federal intervention want to model.
" 'The strategy here is to make us afraid. The response from Chicago is a bunch of obscenities and ‘no,’ said Anna Zolkowski Sobor, whose North Side neighborhood saw agents throw #TearGas and tackle an elderly man. 'We are all Chicagoans who deserve to be here. Leave us alone.' "

New Trump memo ends bond releases for some, could keep migrants detained for years
Story by Angeline McCall, July 15, 2025
"A new Trump administration memo calls to eliminate bond releases for immigrants who crossed the border without authorization, potentially keeping them in Immigration and Customs Enforcement detention for years while their cases progress through the immigration system, according to advocates who work with detained immigrants.
"The policy change means immigrants who entered the country without authorization will no longer be eligible for bond releases and must remain in custody until their cases are resolved — a process that can take years.
" 'We found out this morning that it was happening,' said Andrea Loya, Executive Director of Casa de Paz, an organization that assists people released from ICE custody.
"The memo represents a significant shift from previous practices where many immigrants could be released on bond while awaiting their immigration hearings. Loya said her organization currently sees people released after stays ranging from just a few weeks to over a year, depending on their case complexity, access to legal representation and financial resources.
"Under the new policy, those released on bond will no longer be able to 'go back home' to their families and 'establish some sort of normalcy again and keep fighting for their cases,' Loya said.
"The extended detention periods could stretch for years, according to Loya, who noted that 'some of these people will fight for years because they will not be going back home' due to safety concerns in their countries of origin.
" 'What I don't think a lot of people understand is that some of these people, going back to their home countries is a literal death sentence,' she said.
"Loya characterized the policy as a strategy to pressure immigrants to abandon their legal cases.
" 'So this is definitely a measure to push people to get back and sign a deportation order or push them into just giving up and going back to whatever home country means,' she said.
"The policy change aligns with broader Trump administration immigration enforcement priorities. The One #BigBeautifulBillAct allocates $45 billion to expand #ICEDetention capacity to 100,000 beds, roughly double the current capacity.
"Loya described the detention system as 'monetized' and 'privatized,' suggesting the new policy serves multiple purposes for the administration.
" 'I think it's a push to make people give up in their cases and also, without the understanding that some people can't give up because going back to their home countries is a death sentence,' she said."

#NativeAmerican leaders blast construction of #Florida’s ‘#AlligatorAlcatraz’ on land they call sacred
By KATE PAYNE
Updated 5:57 PM EDT, June 26, 2025TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (AP) — "Florida Republican Gov. #RonDeSantis’ administration is racing ahead with construction of a makeshift immigration detention facility at an airstrip in the Everglades over the opposition of Native American leaders who consider the area their sacred #AncestralHomelands.
"A string of portable generators and dump trucks loaded with fill dirt streamed into the site on Thursday, according to #activist Jessica Namath, who witnessed the activity. The state is plowing ahead with building a compound of heavy-duty tents, trailers and other temporary buildings at the Miami Dade County-owned airfield located in the #BigCypressNationalPreserve, about 45 miles (72 kilometers) west of downtown Miami.
"A spokesperson for the Florida Division of Emergency Management, which is helping lead the project, did not respond to requests for comment.
"State officials have characterized the site as an ideal place to hold #migrants saying there’s 'not much' there other than pythons and alligators.
"#Indigenous leaders dispute that and are condemning the state’s plans to build what’s been dubbed 'Alligator Alcatraz' on their homelands. #NativeAmericans can trace their roots to the area back thousands of years.
"For generations, the sweeping wetlands of what is now South Florida have been home to Native peoples who today make up the #MiccosukeeTribe of Indians of Florida and the #SeminoleTribe of Florida, as well as the #SeminoleNation of Oklahoma.
" 'Rather than Miccosukee homelands being an uninhabited wasteland for alligators and pythons, as some have suggested, the Big Cypress is the Tribe’s traditional homelands. The landscape has protected the #Miccosukee and Seminole people for generations,' Miccosukee Chairman Talbert Cypress wrote in a statement on social media.

#Florida #sheriff warns protesters ahead of nationwide rallies: ‘We will kill you dead’
‘We will be notifying your family where to collect your remains, because we will kill you, graveyard dead,’ the sheriff eerily warned Thursday
by Madeline Sherratt
Friday 13 June 2025"A Florida sheriff issued a stark message to protesters planning to demonstrate this weekend against increasing ICE arrests nationwide.
"#BrevardCounty Sheriff #WayneIvey warned in a press conference Thursday that if any protesters 'throw a brick, a firebomb, or point a gun,' they will be killed.
" 'If you block an intersection or a roadway in Brevard County, you are going to jail. If you flee arrest, you’re going to go to jail tired because we are going to run you down and put you in jail,' Brevard County Sheriff Wayne Ivey said.
" 'If you try to mob rule a car in Brevard County, gathering around it, refusing to let the driver leave in our county, you’re most likely going to get run over and dragged across the street.'
"Protests against the Trump administration's ongoing #ImmigrationCrackdown have been popping up across the nation after they first erupted in Los Angeles on Friday.
"They are expected to continue through the weekend, in alignment with the president’s birthday parade."

@bouriquet Well, considering how many immigrant farmworkers are afraid to go to work, maybe they will send the Marines to pick lettuce or tomatoes. Or more likely, those who oppose the Trump administration.

Sen. #AlexPadilla is forcibly removed from #DHS Secretary #KristiNoem's news conference in #LosAngeles
Noem was in L.A. to address the ongoing demonstrations against President Donald #Trump's #immigration policies.
June 12, 2025, 2:32 PM EDT / Updated June 12, 2025, 2:59 PM EDT
By Rebecca Shabad and Jacob Soboroff"Sen. Alex Padilla, D-Calif., was forcibly removed from a news conference in Los Angeles on Thursday after trying to question Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem during a press conference related to immigration.
" 'I am Sen. Alex Padilla. I have questions for the secretary,' Padilla said to Noem, which prompted several men to physically push him out of the room. It was unclear who the men were, as several were dressed in plainclothes.
"Padilla's office shared a video of the incident with NBC News. The video shows Padilla being taken into a hallway outside and pushed face forward onto the ground as officers with FBI-identifying vests told the senator to put his hands behind his back. The officers then handcuffed him.
"President Donald Trump's immigration policies — and the administration's handling of demonstrations against those policies — have sparked an outcry in recent days. After protesters clashed with officers from Immigration and Customs Enforcement in Los Angeles on Friday, the president deployed members of the National Guard, and later Marines, to assist local law enforcement. Dozens of demonstrations have taken place across the country in the days that followed.
"Speaking to reporters later Thursday, Padilla said he was receiving a briefing from military officials when he learned Noem was in the same building and decided to join her briefing.
" 'I was there peacefully,' he said. 'At one point, I had a question, and so I began to ask a question. I was almost immediately forcibly removed from the room, I was forced to the ground, and I was handcuffed.'
"He added, 'If this is how this administration responds to a senator with a question, if this is how the Department of Homeland Security responds to a senator with a question, you can only imagine what they’re doing to #FarmWorkers, to #cooks, to #DayLaborers out in the #LosAngeles community and throughout #California and throughout the country.' #Florida considers easing #ChildLabor laws after pushing out #immigrants
A new law under consideration in the state Legislature would roll back child labor laws to make up for a dwindling labor pool.
By Ja'han Jones
March 27, 2025, 12:15 PM EDT"As Florida officials enable Trump’s #MassDeportation policies, lawmakers in the state are looking to children to take on some of the jobs that have typically been done by immigrants.
"Making its way through the state Senate is a new law, Senate Bill 918, that aims to loosen child labor laws and allow teenagers to work overnight shifts.
"As CNN reported: 'The state’s legislature on Tuesday advanced a bill that would loosen child labor laws, allowing children as young as 14 years old to work overnight shifts. If the new law is passed, teenagers would be able to work overnight jobs on school days. They are currently prevented from working earlier than 6:30 am or later than 11 pm per state law.'
"#SB918 also 'includes a number of changes including eliminating working time restrictions on teenagers aged 14 and 15 if they are home-schooled and ending guaranteed meal breaks for 16 and 17 year olds,' CNN reported.
"Florida Gov. #RonDeSantis backs the law and has defended the idea of teenagers and college students working these jobs. DeSantis also explicitly linked the effort to the loss of immigrant labor. Speaking about the consequences of state verification laws at an event with border czar #TomHoman, the governor said, 'Yes, we had people that left because of those rules, but you’ve also been able to hire other people. And what’s wrong with expecting our young people to be working part-time now?'
"In recent years, several states — many of them led by #Republican governors — have rolled back child labor laws. This map from the Economic Policy Institute illustrates the spike in states rolling back these laws from 2021 to 2024. Back in 2023, for example, #Arkansas Gov. #SarahHuckabeeSanders signed a bill that made it easier for companies to hire children without getting consent from their parents. One month earlier, The New York Times published a bombshell report about the exploitation of immigrant children in #factories operated by some of the most well-known companies in the U.S.
"That story should have spurred a nationwide push to strengthen child labor laws. Instead, states like Florida are going in the opposite direction, weakening such laws in part to deal with the fallout from the conservative movement’s demonization of immigrants. They’re essentially using child labor to paper over the gaps left by their draconian immigration policies.
"#Project2025, the far-right playbook for Trump’s second term, specifically calls for rolling back #HazardRegulations around child labor. The text claims, 'Some young adults show an interest in inherently dangerous jobs' and argues that 'with parental consent and proper training, certain young adults should be allowed to learn and work in more dangerous occupations.'
"Even as child labor laws are being rolled back, the Trump administration is working to gut social services, including funds that help provide school lunches to children and programs, like the supplemental nutrition assistance program, that help feed poor families. And if those cuts stay in place, they may leave American families with few alternatives to sending their children to work to keep food on the table."
