The problem in Germany after the Saxony-Anhalt election is this:
Every time we oppose the AfD, they will tell us, “But that’s what the voters want.” And then they’ll call us undemocratic for refusing to accept it.
No.
Democracy does not mean surrendering to the strongest fascist tendency at the ballot box. It means defending the democratic society in which people are actually free to disagree, organise, protest, and live without being targeted by fascists.
This will be a tough fight. It will be exhausting. And yes, sometimes it will feel horribly lonely.
But there is literally no alternative.
Until there is no Alternative. -

The AfD’s results in Saxony-Anhalt are not merely “deeply troubling.”
They are the bill coming due after years of political complacency, denial, and deliberate-looking-away.
Centrists have spent years telling us not to overreact.
Not to “polarise.”
Not to call the AfD what it is.
Not to “drive voters into their arms.”
Not to make everything about fascism.Meanwhile, the fascists kept organising.
They normalised their language. They poisoned public discourse. They attacked migrants, queer people, democracy and the very idea of an open society, while "respectable" politicians kept insisting that the "real danger" was apparently being too rude about it.
Well. Here we are.
You cannot spend years treating an anti-democratic movement as just another flavour of conservative politics and then act shocked when it becomes stronger.
This is not happening because anti-fascists were too loud. It is happening because far too many people with power were far too quiet.
And no, the answer is not to move further to the right in the hope of appeasing the far right.
The answer is to fight them. Clearly. Consistently. Without apology.
Because fascism does not become less dangerous when we politely refuse to name it.
