News to ME this morning: ICE detention centers are FOR PROFIT. There's a new board in Kansas putting just one of these under review.

Alt= Image of an item on the KPR website (Kansas Public Radio) with a pic of some kind of board at a meeting, with the headline "Leavenworth's for-profit ICE detention center under scrutiny from new community board", then "The 1,000-bed facility is currently holding 249 detainees. The board is intended to hold the CoreCivic facility to its agreements with the city and ensure inmates and employees are being treated fairly."

  2. Longtime Immigration Court Interpreter Arrested by ICE at South #Texas Airport

The state’s only licensed Hindi, Punjabi, and Urdu legal interpreter is now languishing in a #Raymondville #DetentionCenter. She’s lived in America for 35 years.

"Last month, Meenu Batra, 53, who has lived in the South Texas border colonia of Laguna Heights since 2002, was on her way to Milwaukee, Wisconsin, to work another case. She’s been a court interpreter for over 20 years, the only one licensed in Texas for Hindi, Punjabi, or Urdu. Her language skills are requested nationwide, where she’s contracted to help people making their way through the immigration court system, just as she did for herself 35 years ago when she immigrated from India to New Jersey before settling in Texas.

"She planned to meet with her adult children in Austin after the Wisconsin trip, the only difference she foresaw in an otherwise typical trip. Her routine for years included flying from either Harlingen or Brownsville to far-flung parts of the country where South Asian immigrants needed language access. For this trip, the flight was out of Harlingen.

"But, around 5 p.m. on March 17, Batra was detained by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (#ICE) agents after passing through security at Harlingen International Airport. In a sworn deposition that was filed as part of a petition for habeas corpus—a legal request to be released on the grounds that the detention is unlawful—Batra said the people who arrested her did not have visible badges nor were they wearing uniforms. One of those agents had asked Batra if she knew she was in the country illegally and that she had a deportation order. She replied that her work authorization status, which she applied for regularly after being granted a legal status called withholding of removal by a New Jersey immigration judge decades ago, was good for another four years.

" 'That doesn’t mean you can be here forever,' the agent replied. Two more plainclothes agents would join the two that detained her, bringing her down the escalator and to the front of the airport."

  25. Has #ICE renewed #TacomaWA #DetentionCenter contract? It won’t say

    By Alexandra Yoon-Hendricks, Sep. 25, 2025

Excerpt: "The 10-year contract for the private company operating the #NorthwestICEProcessingCenter in Tacoma is set to end this month, but secrecy shrouds whether it’s been extended.

"#Immigration advocates and legal experts have heavily criticized the lack of transparency over the expected renewal of the contract between Immigration and Customs Enforcement and #GEOGroup, which owns and manages the 1,575-bed, jail-like facility.

"Neither GEO Group nor ICE officials have released information about a new contract for running the detention center. The current contract, inked in 2015 as a one-year contract with an option to renew each year for nine years, is set to expire Sept. 27. The contract awarded GEO Group a minimum of $700 million over 10 years.

" 'It not only puts a veil over people’s eyes, but also prevents people inside the detention center from knowing what the future of this detention center is going to be,' said Josefina Mora-Cheung, director of organizing at #LaResistencia a local #activist group advocating for the end of #MassDeportations and the closure of detention centers.

"GEO Group and ICE officials did not answer emailed questions about whether a new contract was signed or whether the existing contract has been extended. Officials did not respond to reporters’ requests to provide copies of the new contract, should it exist.

" 'We cannot confirm pre-decisional contract selections, but we can confirm that ICE is exploring all options to meet its current requirements,' said ICE spokesperson Chrissy Cuttita in an email Tuesday."

  26. Shame these f*ckers out of office!

#MAGA senator slams illegal immigrants as 'criminals' — then steps in to free ICE detainee

    Jennifer Bowers Bahney
    July 31, 2025 3:54PM ET

"MAGA Sen. #JohnKennedy (R-LA), who has been a fervent supporter of Immigration and Customs Enforcement efforts to deport undocumented migrants, reversed course when it came to one of his constituents, according to The New York Times.

"Kennedy told Fox News on July 17, 'If you’re in our country illegally, you’re a criminal. Illegal immigration is illegal, duh.'

"And yet, the senator's office recently asked the Department of Homeland Security to release 25-year-old #PaolaClouatre after two months in a #Louisiana #DetentionCenter, the report said.

"Clouatre is a Mexican citizen and mother of two young children who is married to a U.S. #MarineCorps #veteran.

" 'In an email on Tuesday morning, Christy Tate, the constituent services representative in Mr. Kennedy’s office, wrote to Mr. Clouatre to confirm that his wife had been released from ICE custody after her office had made a formal request to the federal agency,' the report said.

"The email read in part, 'I am so happy for you and your family. We will continue to keep you, your family and others that are experiencing the same issues in our prayers.' [Because of you, Mr. Kennedy!!!]

"Reporter Pooja Salhotra wrote that Clouatre came to the United States as a teenager 'to seek asylum with her mother and brother.' After her mother failed to show up for a court hearing in California in 2018, a judge issued a deportation order against the teen.

"Now estranged from her mother, Clouatre said she didn't learn of the deportation order until earlier this year 'when she was already in the process of applying for a #greencard, the report said.

"She was detained by ICE agents on May 27 shortly after giving birth, and while attending a 'routine appointment in New Orleans related to her application for a green card and #PermanentResident status,' according to the report.

"During her incarceration, Clouatre's husband brought the couple's 9-week-old baby to the jail so she could breastfeed. [How Christian of them!] She is currently wearing an ankle monitor and awaiting a court date for her immigration proceedings."

  27. Republican’s #TownHall Blows Up in His Face as He’s Showered in Boos

    by Robert McCoy
    Fri, August 1, 2025

"#BryanSteil entered the Elkhorn High School auditorium on Thursday to resounding boos, and faced a raucous crowd for the duration of the 80-minute session, including fierce questions on his support of Trump’s agenda, as well as frequent interruptions, chants, and jeering.

"Attendees were evidently fired up over Steil’s support of Trump’s budget, poised to tilt taxes in favor of the #rich while tattering the #SocialSafetyNet. Steil defended his vote on the bill, which is also estimated to balloon the national debt by trillions of dollars. (When the lawmaker mentioned national debt as a pressing issue, one attendee interjected: 'Thanks to you!')

"He also voiced his support of Trump’s controversial immigration policies—a topic which elicited 'some of the loudest boos,' according to the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel.

"More than one person in attendance referred to the Florida immigrant detention camp callously dubbed '#AlligatorAlcatraz' as a #ConcentrationCamp, which Steil objected to. A constituent noted that 'the difference between a #prison or a #DetentionCenter and a concentration camp is #DueProcess.'

"Steil also had to address Trump’s tariffs (which one attendee called 'a terrible tax that’s going to be placed on the citizens of the United States'), as well as Trump’s push to all but abolish the Department of Education ('Education is best resolved at the local level,' Steil said).

"Many questions Steil faced reflected a widespread perception that Steil is in Trump’s pocket. One attendee said, 'Southeast #Wisconsin has not been represented by you. President Trump seems to run Southeast Wisconsin through you.'

"Another made similar remarks in the context of immigration. 'What I see happening to our #Immigrant population embarrasses me—horrifies me,' she said.
You have not raised a voice to complain about it. Where do I see your leadership? I see no leadership—I see you following Trump 100 percent of the time.' In response to this latter question, Steil, ironically, 'lauded Trump’s executive orders and #deportations,' Wisconsin #PublicRadio reports."

  28. #Journalists among at least 13 arrested during #immigration-related protest in #CincinnatiOH

Police in #CovingtonKY, said those arrested had refused to comply with orders to disperse.

By John Seewer | The Associated Press

"Police in Cincinnati arrested at least 13 people, including two journalists, after demonstrators protesting the #immigration #detention of a former hospital chaplain blocked a two-lane bridge carrying traffic over the #OhioRiver.

"A reporter and a photography intern who were arrested while covering the protest for #CityBeat, a Cincinnati news and entertainment outlet, were among those arraigned Friday morning in a Kentucky court.

"Other journalists reporting on protests around the U.S. have been have arrested and injured this year. More than two dozen were hurt or roughed up while covering protests against #ImmigrationRaids in #LosAngeles.

"A Spanish-language journalist was arrested in June while covering a #NoKings protest near #AtlantaGA. Police initially charged Mario Guevara, a native of El Salvador, with #UnlawfulAssembly, #obstruction of police and being a pedestrian on or along the roadway.

"A prosecutor dropped the charges, but Guevara had already been turned over to U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement and is being held in a south Georgia immigration #DetentionCenter. His lawyers say he has been authorized to work and remain in the country, but #ICE is trying to deport him.

"Video from the demonstration in Cincinnati Thursday night shows several tense moments, including when an officer punches a protester several times as police wrestle him to the ground.

"Earlier, a black SUV drove slowly onto the Roebling Bridge while protesters walked along the roadway that connects Cincinnati with Kentucky. Another video shows a person in a neon-colored vest pushing against the SUV.

"Police in Covington, Kentucky, said those arrested had refused to comply with orders to disperse. The department said in a statement that officers who initially attempted to talk with the protest's organizer were threatened and met with hostility.

"Among the charges filed against those arrested were rioting, failing to disperse, obstructing emergency responders, criminal mischief and disorderly conduct.

"Reporter Madeline Fening and photo intern Lucas Griffith were charged with felony rioting and several other charges, said Ashley Moor, the editor in chief of CityBeat.

"A judge on Friday set a $2,500 bond for each of those arrested.

"The arrests happened during a protest in support of #AymanSoliman, an Egyptian immigrant who worked as a chaplain at Cincinnati Children's Hospital. He was detained last week after he showed up for a routine check-in with ICE officials at their office near Cincinnati.

"Protesters met in downtown Cincinnati on Thursday in support of Soliman, then walked across the bridge carrying a banner that read '#BuildBridgesNotWalls.'

"Covington police said that 'while the department supports the public’s right to peaceful assembly and expression, threatening officers and blocking #CriticalInfrastructure, such as a major bridge, presents a danger to all involved.' "

  30. WTF! After decades in the US, #Iranians arrested in #Trump’s deportation drive

By KIM CHANDLER, CLAIRE RUSH and ELLIOT SPAGAT
    Updated 11:59 PM EDT, June 28, 2025

"Mandonna 'Donna' Kashanian lived in the United States for 47 years, married a U.S. citizen and raised their daughter. She was gardening in the yard of her New Orleans home when U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement officers handcuffed and took her away, her family said.

"Kashanian arrived in 1978 on a student visa and applied for asylum, fearing retaliation for her father’s support of the U.S.-backed shah. She lost her bid, but she was allowed to remain with her husband and child if she checked in regularly with immigration officials, her husband and daughter said. She complied, once checking in from South Carolina during #HurricaneKatrina. She is now being held at an immigration #DetentionCenter in #BasileLouisiana, while her family tries to get information.

"Other Iranians are also getting arrested by immigration authorities after decades in the United States. The U.S. Department of Homeland Security won’t say how many people they’ve arrested, but U.S. military strikes on Iran have fueled fears that there is more to come.

" 'Some level of vigilance, of course, makes sense, but what it seems like ICE has done is basically give out an order to round up as many Iranians as you can, whether or not they’re linked to any threat and then arrest them and deport them, which is very concerning,' said Ryan Costello, policy director of the National Iranian American Council, an advocacy group.

"#HomelandSecurity did not immediately reply to an email seeking comment on Kashanian’s case but have been touting arrests of Iranians. The department announced the arrests of at least 11 Iranians on immigration violations during the weekend of the U.S. missile strikes. U.S. Customs and Border Protection said, without elaborating, that it arrested seven Iranians at a Los Angeles-area address that 'has been repeatedly used to harbor illegal entrants linked to #terrorism.' 31. #MayorBaraka of #NewarkNJ, arrested at #immigration #DetentionCenter he has been #protesting

By JAKE OFFENHARTZ and CLAUDIA LAUER
    Updated 7:00 PM EDT, May 9, 2025

"Newark Mayor Ras Baraka was arrested Friday at a federal immigration detention center where he has been protesting its opening this week, a federal prosecutor said.

"Alina Habba, interim U.S. attorney for New Jersey, said on the social platform X that Baraka committed trespass and ignored warnings from #HomelandSecurity personnel to leave #DelaneyHall, a detention facility run by private prison operator #GeoGroup.

    [...]

"Video shows the mayor standing on the public side of the gate

"In video of the altercation shared with The Associated Press, a federal official in a jacket with the logo of the Homeland Security Investigations can be heard telling Baraka he could not join a tour of the facility because 'you are not a congress member.'

"Baraka then left the secure area, rejoining protesters on the public side of the gate. Video showed him speaking through the gate to a man in a suit, who said: 'They’re talking about coming back to arrest you.'

" 'I’m not on their property. They can’t come out on the street and arrest me,' Baraka replied."
