  2. Intercity Transit in Olympia WA is awesome for a number of reasons, including this sign on a seat when we got on this evening to go home after walking downtown for dinner. Transit and civil rights have traveled together a long time.

  3. Heading to Houston Monday for a conference. Stark reminder of whose trips are made easy + fast, whose time is valued: 41-minute driving trip airport to hotel, 2 hours via transit with 1 or 2 required transfers. Hotel is in Galleria area so this isn't a matter of going to rural area.

  4. "People don’t walk in dangerous areas (of which we’ve created infinity of), unless they don’t have better options. And those circumstances would likely preclude them from doing things like buying and carrying special visibility garb." --Angie Schmitt

  5. "It is not possible to prioritize everyone.

Every decision has tradeoffs, and it’s clear who those choices prioritize when you consider the comfort, ease, and safety of different users. When it’s faster, easier, safer, and more comfortable to get somewhere by driving, we are prioritizing driving." --Anna Zivarts

  7. This should be great! Book talk Aug. 28 with my friend Anna Zivarts, author of When Driving Is Not an Option, offered by Jonathon Stalls, author of WALK: Slow Down, Wake Up, and Connect at 1-3 Miles Per Hour. I went to a reading and walk audit when Jonathon came to my new hometown of Olympia a while back.

  9. Observations above are the kinds of things I now cannot avoid recognizing. Side effect of working in transportation and thinking directly every single day about the needs of people who can't or don't drive. The book to give transportation professionals who don't notice these things or don't recognize who benefits and who is burdened by their decisions: islandpress.org/books/when-dri.

  10. Boost/discuss for people who think vehicle tech will take care of safety for them. Kea Wilson's takeaways:
-Systems aren't trained to recognize people who use wheelchairs, other assistive devices, bikes, scooters or motorcycles
-The deadline for compliance got bumped back from 3 to 5 years
-They don't have to be able to stop for pedestrians above 45 mph

  13. What the actual bloody what?! I used the sidewalk on the other side of the road to leave my meeting location today only to discover that that sidewalk also ends abruptly in gravel and bushes with a ledge and no ramp to anywhere. No sign that would have warned me that that sidewalk was going to run out. #accessibility #ADA #transportation #infrastructure #MoveEquity #MobilityJustice

  14. I just walked along a long stretch of beautiful new sidewalk from a bus stop and encountered this. Shel Silverstein's book is always true-- Where the Sidewalk Ends. He just didn't complete it with the subtitle "With no Advance Warning Far Enough Ahead that You Could Have Crossed at the Roundabout by the Bus Stop to the Side with the Complete Sidewalk and Curb Ramps."
