  1. This year’s #WeekWithoutDriving campaign in DC included nearly a third of the DC Council and 30 Advisory Neighborhood Commissioners from all eight wards.: ggwash.org/view/101852/this-ye

  2. "I have yet to meet someone who earnestly enjoys being stuck in gridlock traffic for hours a week. Yet people unhappy with traffic still resort to cars to get around when it is perceived as the least difficult option." - Peter Wood in their transit diary for #WeekWithoutDriving: ggwash.org/view/101281/transit

  3. "Almost everywhere I needed to go this week COULD be reached by public transit, but many of the trips required more logistics, more time, and more physical energy than if I were driving." - Bianca Palmisano in their transit diary for #WeekWithoutDriving: ggwash.org/view/101298/transit

  4. A belated final day of our #WeekWithoutDriving. We rode to a friend’s birthday ice cream crawl. Protected lanes mean friends and cousins can ride side by side. youtube.com/shorts/eIiC1OMlizg

  5. Here's your last chance to support America Walks for a #WeekWithoutDriving! @americawalks.bsky.social also brings 1000s of people together in US as #FreewayFighters & #WalkingCollege grads. America Walks has a national reach. Their outsized impact is local: better sidewalks, crosswalks, transit.

  6. #WeekWithoutDriving Day 6: group ride to Emeryville Harvest fest and bike valet, ride downtown to Jack London Sq to catch the Woodstock water shuttle, then soccer time in Alameda

  7. Wrapped up the #WeekWithoutDriving! Solo bike ride this morning. @timcoffman & the teen went to a board games meetup at lunchtime using the bus. Tonight the teen & I took the bus to a Silent Book Club meeting in East Nashville. Something that surprised me was that the buses were pretty full even on a Sunday early evening. First time I’ve seen one of the e-ink bus stop displays, very nice! Waiting at this bus stop was tense bc the street it’s on is high volume, fast, & cars are so close.

  8. I'll be in bed soon, so that's the end of #WeekWithoutDriving. I was able to travel a total of around 190 km walking, rack-and-rolling and bike->LRT. The weather was spectacular and I was in control of my schedule for the most part, so very manageable. Absolutely a couple of trips in there I would have driven had the challenge not been on! This would have been a very different exercise in winter...

  9. A section of greenway boardwalk that was closed for repairs for months reopened this week. So happy to have this long + mostly zero traffic ride option available again! About 34 miles round trip to the J Percy Priest dam and back. #WeekWithoutDriving #BikeTooter

  10. Day 7 of #WeekWithoutDriving began with a 450m walk to Tim’s for breakfast sandwiches. On my way now to Riverside South for a community event. I’ll bring my bike on the train and am expecting to catch the 70 to rack-and-roll on the far end to get to my destination 4 km from the station.

  11. @[email protected] @[email protected] @[email protected] A1: Posting from Seattle, WA. I took up #WeekWithoutDriving this year. I rarely drive so the challenge should be an easy one, except my daughter demanded I drive her to her Japanese school twice a week instead of biking her. Luckily, she now prefers biking! I've just got one more day to go. #BikeNite

  12. 91 kms of travel today, roughly, by bike and rack-and-roll. Tomorrow will be easier to round the #WeekWithoutDriving out...

  13. Rack-and-roll to Baseline/Centrepointe on the 88 was easy and fast - but, man, was it crowded! Easy 10k ride home, most of the way with a dear colleague on a beautiful autumn evening. That was a heck of a test of the #WeekWithoutDriving. Now to update the spreadsheet - ugh.

  14. Cost of Car Ownership The last of our 7 #WeekWithoutDriving Rides Sun Oct 5 10AM Oregon Park. 2950 NE Oregon Loop ride Stop for lunch @tigard-stripes.bsky.social Shawne leads a ride around town breaking down the high costs of owning a car (currently $965/month) www.shift2bikes.org/calendar/eve...

  15. @kimu I don't drive most weeks.

If I forget to drive for too long the battery goes flat and, being a rather old car, it can be a bit of a pain to get it going again. So I try to remember to go for a drive once every three weeks, which seems to keep it working.

  16. Decided for day 6 of #WeekWithoutDriving to combine our usual Saturday farmers market trip with a stop at the grocery store. Really appreciated how the Hopper can be turned into a cart, it was handy at the market. Hauling it all was a bit much, even with pedal assist. Nice to have food tasks taken care of for the weekend though. Enjoyed the Halloween decor in the neighborhood near the market! #BikeTooter

  17. #WeekWithoutDriving day 5: rolling by other commuters to school at a traffic circle is always nice. We ring our bells to say hello.

  18. #WeekWithoutDriving Day 4: sorta rainy morning but not unpleasant at all. First time wearing the raincoat in a while.

  19. Today’s #WeekWithoutDriving will be a challenge. My first event isn’t till 9, so I’ve ridden to Orleans.

  20. Fridays are an office day for me, so day 5 of #WeekWithoutDriving involved a bike commute. The teen was off today for conferences so no ride to school to start the day, just straight to work. Tonight, @timcoffman & the teen took the city bus to meet up with friends while I headed out on a group bike ride, the Music City Dope Pedalers. Great day. Breaking our non-driving streak tonight though bc the teen is getting a ride home after going to a play. #BikeTooter

  21. @bikenite @footsteps

A1. I am in Oakland CA as usual. I am participating in #WeekWithoutDriving as in posting about it, but I'm not undertaking it as a challenge, as it is what we usually do. But hopefully it raises awareness. Even in the USA, 1 in 3 people do not drive, but much of our infrastructure is designed for those who do.

The campaign is supposed to highlight the challenges people who don't drive face. There are many, but driving a car isn't always awesome either. So there's a lot of good to highlight also.

I'm looking forward to trying to complete the #coffeeneuring challenge. I hope I can make it 6 different shops!

  24. Day 5 of #WeekWithoutDriving was a bunch of short trips around the neighbourhood walking and cycling with one longer shopping trip where I used bike->LRT for the return trip. Tomorrow will be the big challenge as I'm around the city for some commitments - and the train is down for testing. (values in this sheet of travel-to-date are meters). I may have to grab the car if I start falling behind.

  25. Really like the ideas of #WeekWithoutDriving and #30DaysOfBiking .

And don't do either because of family obligations in April, and this week I have to get my bicycle worked on to prepare for ice and snow and the closest shop is over 20km away so need to drive it there with spouse's car.

#Coffeneuring is also another great idea that I've never really been able to accomplish.

But I haven't had my own car by choice since 1995 and my bicycles are my main transportation.

  40. Got myself a new front tray for my #Benno #eScout and its inaugural ride was transporting a 25 pound box of chocolate a half mile to our new home, which is a great way to end off the #WeekWithoutDriving.

  41. #WeekWithoutDriving thoughts: Helps not to have kids in a zillion activities, I know. I taught my kids to ride city bus when I started bike commuting; gave them transpo skills for a lifetime + independence, freed me from chauffeur duties much of the time.

  42. #WeekWithoutDriving thoughts: I'm fortunate to have enough money to have an e-bike for heavy hauling when needed, and to flatten hills. Biking is helping me through some knee pain right now too (easier than walking!). Biking husband + friends = social travel bonus.

  43. #WeekWithoutDriving thoughts: I've already arranged my life to have transportation freedom without a car. When I need to be a nondriver someday I won't miss a beat. My dad lost his independence when he had to stop driving because he couldn't consider/use other modes. Not me!

  44. #WeekWithoutDriving Day 5: End of the day, rode down to the beginning hula hoop class I'm taking through our parks/rec. Husband rode down to join me for the swing dance class we're taking together that meets shortly after I'm done hooping. We rode home together in cool darkness, happy to have dry roads after last night's steady rain. Wonderful end to the week.

  45. #WeekWithoutDriving Day 4: Biked to my dentist, then to the office (2nd day in a row of long in-person meetings; kind of a treat, TBH). End of the day, my best friend who lives near me and also rides for transportation suggested we go out for snacks and chat. We rode home together at sunset. Delightful, and that last bit of social travel isn't something you can do when you drive alone.

  46. #WeekWithoutDriving Day 3: Biked 8.5 mi for an all-day meeting. Delighted to see another bike parked out front when I arrived. Later I'll ride to Olympia Center for a class, then home.

Again had bike lanes for nearly 100% of my route. Thank you City of Olympia! And Tumwater too.
