I'm lucky that Oregon is a full "vote by mail" state since I can't vote in person (illness). Ballots are automatically sent to all registered voters.

A tiny % of ballots are cast in person, but most vote at home and return ballots via mail or take them to drop box.

@flexghost Eight states plus Washington, DC, have "all mail voting" (aka, vote by mail or vote at home). It's pretty hard to keep up the facade that there's a problem with allowing *everyone* to vote by mail, not just disabled folks.

And by the way, vote by mail is not accessible to all disabled folks. Voters with certain disabilities need other accessible methods. One size does *not* fit all.

Disabled folks been yelling about this for decades, but getting folks to actually LISTEN has been very difficult. We're fighting entrenched capitalist ableist interests here.

So a quick run down:

#DisabilityJustice is a big movement that's being actively ignored and/or silenced by society at large and even by so-called progressives. People in America in particular have been conditioned to not see us as people with complex inner lives worthy of the same rights and protections, so we get treated like an afterthought a lot.

(Good way to tell if Leftists or progressives are trustworthy and care about this is to ask them to design accessibility into their events, campaigns, community/city designs from the get-go. If they refuse or claim they have no capacity or funds or treat it as an add-on, then they are actively hostile to us and honestly hurting themselves too. Accessibility lifts up everyone, but trying to get abled-bodied people to see that is difficult.)

Right to marry who you love?

That's an #accessibility issue.

Right to affordable housing, food, water, Internet? Right to access public spaces and transportation? Right to access information that abled-bodied people already can access?

All is an accessibility issue.

So getting the word out means fighting against all that too.

Lots of disabled folks working on it, but we need abled-bodied allies to boost our work more. We need y'all to CARE.

Imani Barbarin, Alice Wong, Matthew Cortland, Tinu, and others on Twitter, but most not yet active here, been trying really hard to push for campaigns to include us (like the gay marriage fight to include gay disabled folks or to get presidential candidates and congress folks to promise to fix this).

Last year a bill was written by a few progressives in the US House, but it's stalled. Democrats largely agree with Republicans on ignoring our needs. That bill would have given us marriage equality, upped the amount of savings we're allowed to have, and upped what we get for benefits.

Right now we are trapped in such extreme poverty that many of us have to crowdfund for food and supplies. Disability benefits are not enough to live off of at all.

Many Disabled couples, despite still being together, had to divorce and move into separate locations after becoming disabled and unable to do full time work, just so they could get benefits and access to healthcare.

Take a listen to Imani Barbarin on Instagram or TikTok. Disability Visibility project edited by Alice Wong shares our stories. (Good starting points.) Hashtags we used to use on Twitter haven't really made it here tbh. #CripTheVote was one used a lot.

Also, check out the podcast Death Panel. It talks a lot about this. The creators or Death Panel also explain how awful the system is (a lot of medical gatekeeping that's hughly subjective) and what we ought to do instead in their book Health Communism.

Now that I think the Herschel Walker saga is coming to an end--at least I hope it is, I want to gently remind all of us that casual #ableism is not okay. Making fun of Walker's ideas is perfectly fine. I have been so disappointed in people, journalists, friends, and acquaintances this year because of the lack of understanding of #disability. Herschel Walker is clearly dealing with #CTE. There's just no excuse for the kind of comments I've seen.
