From left to right: #op6 #librem5 #fairphone5 and I forgot the last one :x

First 3 on the left #mobian with #phosh
    All with working cameras!

On the display's of each device: photo of @manut doing @debian things :)
photos taken by the cameras of those devices, for comparison :)

Mandatory disclaimer: camera on the #Fairphone5 is highly experimental, etc.

What a huge improvement! Could you post a full image at it's original, full resolution? I'd love to see what just a default jpg comes out looking like at it's full resolution.

    Regarding the price see: mastodon.social/@janvlug/11651

There are no is no monthly fee for the #Librem5 itself. You can use it with the provider of your choice.

You can take a totally optional #PureOS subscription though: puri.sm/posts/pureos-optional- Such subscription will help funding the advancement of PureOS. Which in the end will also help the #MobileLinux eco system.

  4. @mihamarkic Yes, but the FOSS itself is not hosted. If you use for example #PureOS you just install it on your phone (or other device). It is self hosted on your device, so not under US jurisdiction.

So, using a US cloud provider means US jurisdiction, which I also do not want to fall under for my data.

But for example, I self host #Nextcloud, and use that with PureOS on my #Librem5 (and other computers). This is perfectly fine even regarding the fact that PureOS is not EU based.

  5. @FrostDaemon I cannot answer this question for you. I live in the Netherlands. But here is a page of supported mobile providers for the #Librem5:

  6. @laumapret

You can use Android apps with #Wayland on the #Librem5. But personally, I have no experience with Wayland.

For navigation (#openstreetmap based), I use #PureMaps (flathub.org/en/apps/io.github.) and just looking at GNOME maps (flathub.org/en/apps/org.gnome.).

Indeed, it is like using whatever could run on the #Linux desktop. Ideally, adaptive applications:

  7. @dos

Wow. Good to hear. I have patience, and I can handle inconvenience to have freedom. And the inconvenience regarding the connectivity loss nowadays is very minor.

Thanks for all your work, every update the #Librem5 is getting better, highly appreciated!

    @codo

  8. @khleedril I use Signal Desktop on the #Librem5, installed as #flatpak (unofficial).

Apparently, @signalapp is working towards having Signal Desktop fully independent of the Android and iOS apps.

  9. @jelv See: social.librem.one/@dos/1165043

Personally, I charge the #Librem5 whenever possible. I have suspend enabled. I charge the phone at night. This enough for me, but it is less than Android or Apple phones.

  10. @janneke This is a difficult question to answer. First of all, I only really know the #Librem5. Furthermore, you can be tracked via the browser, via connection to telephone antenna's, Wifi and Bluetooth and probably more.

The Librem 5 has kill switches to physically switch of wifi, gsm, camera, and microphone.

  11. @Kerplunk Unfortunately the #Librem5 is expensive. Purism has to earn all on the hardware sell. Purism is not gathering data, or pre-installing privacy invasive apps on their devices.

It is possible to support the PureOS development though:

    puri.sm/posts/pureos-optional-

But that would cost you even more.

From the other side, the devices have longer support than the average Android phone.

Maybe you can try to get a second hands device via:

  12. @jajo Sorry, I cannot answer this question, I'm not familiar with BankID and Swish.

For banking I actually never use my phone, I use a browser on my Linux desktop or Linux laptop. I can use the browser for banking on the #Librem5 as well though.

  13. @bazkie Maybe you can still get somewhere a second hand #Librem5. Apparently @codo has one in their drawer 🙂

But you can als ask here:

    forums.puri.sm/tag/marketplace

  14. @codo I do not use PWA's myself, but I know that there is some work being done in this area:

    source.puri.sm/search?search=p

The battery is enough for me, I charge the #Librem5 usually whenever I have the possibility, so I cannot give details. It is way less than modern Android or Apple phones though. I use suspend.

Phone calls and SMS is reliable for me. I live in the Netherlands.

Maybe it woud be interesting to give your Librem 5 another try:

    Make sure to flash Crimson.

  15. I realize that yesterday it was exactly four years ago that I started the experiment to use the #Librem5 #Linux #phone as my daily phone.

I have been using it since then, and the software is being improved regularly and in a very transparent way.

Read here about the beginning of this experiment: janvlug.org/blog/one-week-libr

    #MobileLinux #DigitalSovereignty #FOSS #OpenSource #Purism

Would you be interested in a blog with an update of the current state of the Librem 5?

  16. @me

Since 2022-05-01. I wrote a blog about this, when I started it as a experiment.

    janvlug.org/blog/one-week-libr

Thanks for asking. I realize now that it was yesterday exactly four years ago.

The software has been improving since then, and it is still improving. The release of the next version of #PureOS for the #Librem5 with the name #Crimson is imminent.

    @dademurphy @purism

  17. @dademurphy What am I walled of from? Actually Google and especially Apple build the walls.

My #freedom on the #Librem5 is that I can install any software I want. Nearly all software I use can be freely inspected, changed, reused and distributed. @purism, the manufacturer is not applying any methods to limit the usage of the #phone produced by them.

    theregister.com/2026/05/01/buy

    I use a #Librem5 #Linux #phone. With the default #PureOS operating system.

Enjoy your #freedom, break free from #Google and #Apple.

Have a full Linux computer in your pocket that you can also use for calling.

    Questions? Ask me.

  19. Does anyone know of the general development of #navigation software for #mobile #Linux devices like the #Librem5 ?
#PureMaps somehow runs, but it is not a great experience performance wise and the development is not super active anymore. I saw a discussion once that #OrganicMaps also tries to make a mobile Linux version, but I can't find any update there either. Are there any plans for #GnomeMaps to add navigation features?
