Tomorrow is the last day to self-nominate for the #MapLibre Board. We have 5 great candidates now, but I would love to see a 6th one so we can have a vote. 🙂
Being on the MapLibre board is a great way to contribute to the future of open source maps and to make connections in the space.
MapLibre is a young project. We don't have a lot of red tape and you decide your own priorities.
My DMs are open if you want more info!

A couple of creative coworkers are trying to get proper 3D models (glTF) onto a map in #maplibre native. This is as far as they got 😂 vs the LOD they’re looking for (our logo as an example).
Seems this is easy with GL JS through three.js or deckgl but (near) impossible with native. Am I wrong @bart ?

MapLibre GL JS 6.0 is out: ESM-only, WebGL2-required, and fully freed from Mapbox heritage. Sixteen breaking changes mark the library's evolution into its own identity. If you build location features on MapLibre, this one requires attention.

State of the Map trip booked! I'll be in town from the 24th of August already, so if you want to hang out, talk maps, play some board games or bike around #Paris, hit me up.
This will be my first global #SOTM. 🙂
Two #MapLibre items on the programme.

MapLibre GL JS v5 (v6 is in pre-release) supports globe projection. Enable it with setProjection({type:'globe'}), add a GlobeControl for the user toggle, and configure sky and background layers for a realistic look. Pair it with the satellite style, and it's a big visual upgrade over a flat Mercator for full-planet views.

Google removed the HeatmapLayer from its Maps JavaScript API in May 2026. No migration path, no replacement, just a "low customer usage" message.
MapLibre GL JS has a better native heatmap: zoom-responsive, data-driven, open source, and not subject to anyone's product roadmap.
We helped a team migrate. It was simpler than they expected.
Here's what broke and how to fix it.

weeklyOSM 830 is out: osm2pgsql 2.3.0 drops with major tile expiry changes, iD 2.41.0 ships with smarter relation editing, and OpenMapEditor relaunches as MapDraw (local-first, AGPL, contributes to OSM directly). Also, a shout-out to @ianthetechie for his post on routing privacy and billing as the unseen foundations of any mapping product.

weeklyOSM 829 is out, covering the @maplibre May newsletter, a new OSRM Trip demo for solving real-world routing puzzles, HOT's seagrass mapping initiative, and SotM 2026 details. A good 5-minute read for anyone building on the open mapping stack.
