Doing some #planetiler #OSM benchmarking, as one does on a Saturday morning. Seems that it's happiewt when you give it about 3x the heap memory relative to the input PBF, any less and it starts flushing the node cache to disk severely impacting performance. Does that match your experience?

This is for a 500MB pbf file converting to #PMTiles using the default profile.

big fan of tippecanoe->pmtiles->maplibre->github pages workflow, can pretty easily take a ~300mb .shp like this and render it all in-browser (no fancy db, server, or saas hosting)

This week I’m learning about #InvenioRDM, #PMTiles and #COG.

The @protomaps project and its #pmtiles format looks really promising. You can serve an entire planet of raster or vector map tiles from a single static file by making clever use of HTTP range requests.

@russss I didnt know #gdal/ogr did #pmtiles! That's good to know.

I think I need to do special calculations for my data, so I don't think a straight ogr2ogr will work for me……

I think I've hit the limits of what #tippecanoe can do. I use it to generate #VectorTiles for #WaterwayMapOrg. It's great for turning a geojson file into a #pmtiles file.

The main maps on WWM.org are created from 20 GiB GeoJSON files. That's fine. 👍 But now I have a different data file which probably needs a lot of specialized zoom level processing to be usabe.

На эту тему есть популярные руководства , в том числе по работе с базами PostGIS и запуску тайлсерверов для реализации бесшовных карт OSM. Но есть принципиально иной подход — векторные карты Protomaps , которые обеспечивают более высокое разрешение, настройку внешнего вида и наложение произвольных меток. Они изначально предполагают максимальную простоту в создании своих карт. А главное, что разместить тайлы можно на своём хостинге или в облаке.
