Seeing a report from June that some survey found 61% of prepaid wireless users would either "change providers" or abandon phone service entirely if the FCC implements "know your customer" rules requiring ID to have a phone number. This includes myself.
Changing providers will mean having to get service from a non-US based international tourist SIM provider, or possibly from a domestic data-only provider. Key word in the proposal is "voice service providers." This means data-only SIMs might be exempt. SIMS that do not offer a phone number at all would obviously be exempt from any law requiring ID to get a phone number unless separately added to the law.
Note that needing ID to get or retain a phone number will make ongoing work at Signal (Signalapp) to support accounts that do not have phone numbers (data-only service) far more important. If this isn't finished in time people who have to walk away from their phone numbers will need to ensure they have registration lock enabled and may lose their accounts if they ever have to reinstall Signal or lose their phone,
While it is possible today to use an existing Signal account after abandoning and not replacing your phone number, the next person to get that phone number can take over your account. Registration lock and the PIN can delay this, but I don't know if they can wait 7 days, set a new PIN, and start the account from scratch and boot you out.

If domestic data-only SIMS are also put behind an ID wall, the countermeasure is foreign data-only SIMS sold online to tourists usually as E-sims. A E-sim cannot be intercepted by customs and arrives instantly. These providers are based in countries that do not require ID for data service maybe any service. They could be sold from the US as of today but generally are not.
Very few countries block international SIMs in roaming mode. There are a few but not many as requiring tourists to get local SIMS to use their phones (some of which are carrier locked) tends to suppress tourism. These are normally data-only SIMS, no phone number involved. There are many brands to choose from, many openly advertising that they can be used to bypass "know your customer" requirements.
All 50 state AG's have for obvious reasons endorsed requiring ID for phone numbers. Most groups not connected to policing that have made any statements seem to be opposed.
All of this is complicated by the fact that the US is now a Fascist country, and if Trump tries to rule without Congress and fighting breaks out, do remember the FCC is part of the executive branch and is thus controlled by Trump.
If I have to sign off the Internet entirely save for what I can do with cracked enemy wifi, I will. I will never publish a single line of text or a single frame of video that can be connected to be by an ID document. Not now, not ever. I would sooner return to pirate radio and distributing videos on camera cards.

copying from the Singnal Desktop App is OK but I MOSTLY use Signal and write diary on my phone. -

@signalapp die Meldung, dass ein Update verfügbar ist hilft ja #Signal aktuell zu halten, aber sie nervt auch.
Ich beziehe die #signalapp über #fdroid aus dem Guardian Project und da dauert es auch mal 2-3 Tage bis das Update verfügbar ist.
Wenn ihr dann alle 1-2 Tage ein Update raushaut, dann ist die Meldjng permanent da, und das ist nicht so cool. Könnt ihr da was machen?
