  1. It appears that the "native" binaries for #ClaudeCode were compiled with AVX2 optimizations enabled.

So it's de facto broken on any non-AVX2 system, including most older Apple Intel Macs. (And maybe the M1 systems too, if they are using Rosetta? I'm not sure.)

This is particularly infuriating because the software doesn't *need* AVX2. You can install it via NPM and it works just fine. It just constantly complains that it wants to update itself, which it can't, because the native binaries suck.

  4. macOS 26 Tahoe will be the last version of macOS for Intel powered Apple Macintosh computers.

Intel Macs make fabulous Linux machines! If you have an Intel Mac, there's options. All is not lost.

Between the excellent build quality and the fantastic displays I'd even suggest that Macs are a superior, non-obvious choice for picking up a used machine for experimenting with Linux. I've used Minis for Linux containerization nodes in the home lab in the past as well.

Be careful though, make sure the hardware spec matches the price. Lots of uninformed (delusional?) Mac zealots out there think their 5-10 year old Mac is worth way more than the hardware spec would imply. Paying a 5-10% premium for the better build quality on an iMac or lappie in the used market is worth it in my opinion. For the Mini, not so much.

  5. So uh, what does it mean if I boot my Intel Macbook from USB and it gives me a light grey screen with an Apple logo (no ⊘ symbol, but also no loading bar or spinny animation). Do I assume that it's doing something? lol

    Probably doesn't matter but it's an A1286 MBP 15" mid-2010.

  6. After Homebrew is installed, to make it work correctly with a zsh shell on an Intel Mac (my 2015 Macbook air) this needs to be added to the .zprofile file:

    eval "$(/usr/local/bin/brew shellenv)"

I had to work through the web to fix the problem because of a persistent error message in the Warp terminal after installing Homebrew to install Lynx.

(It took me long enough to manually set up tabs and panes before making a Lynx tab, jeez).

    Isn't computing treacherous.

  12. @fistfulofdave @fistfulofdave last Ubuntu works completely directly (only need to mark Third party software in the installation process to have Wi-Fi working when restart). By now I'm struggling to keep Big Sur and dual boot with rEFInd.

  13. So a USB hub (not Thunderbolt) and an Ethernet adapter are essential.

I am grateful to all the volunteer developers. I finally have Fedora working natively on my legacy Intel-based Mac.

I merely suggest that devs be more conscious and/or transparent going forward, about the need for Ethernet, external keyboard, external mouse, and non-Thunderbolt USB hub.
