This weekend I did some tinkering with the 2015 #iMac.  Running #Sequoia via #OpencoreLegacyPatcher started to make the #Mac chug hard.

I attempted installing a few different #linux based distros but the ones I tried (that I was interested in) all failed/crashed after installing.

So I went with my favorite “newish” #macOS, Monterey.   Now all my old #intel macs run good ol’ Monty and I am very okay with that.

After many many many hours, both #Macbookpro now dual boots with a a “classic” OSX and a “modern” OSX.

MBP11 boots #Snow #MacOSXsnowleopard  and #macOS12.

MBP13 boots #macOSMavericks and macOS 12 (Monterey)

It's just great that there is no way to see the typed password, to rule out keyboard language issues.

So this is the beginning of the end of the full usefulness of my late 2013 27" iMac. With OpenCore Legacy Patcher, Ventura runs quite well, but:

- The latest version of Davinci Resolve requires at least Sonoma and
- Sonoma support for OpenCore Legacy patcher has some weird deficiencies, such as: "Cannot edit photos in Portrait mode in Apple Photos on nvidia Kepler graphics hardware."

Oddly specific, but a showstopper for me.

So I cannot use both Photos and the latest Davinci Resolve version. Photos has always had the right balance of simplicity and power for me. It's there and it "just works".

12 years was a pretty good run.

Today I managed to update a 2011 macbook air from El Capitan to Sonoma!

Its faster, and it can safely browse the web again!

I can still do almost everything just fine with my Early 2013 27" iMac, thanks to the (at the time) top-of-the-line model, and OpenCore Legacy Patcher, which allows me to use almost-current macOS versions with all security updates.

Even #Reaper with tons of plugins and DaVinci Resolve still work great.

Two points will make me upgrade in the near future, though:
* X-Plane 12 won't run, because it needs a more recent Metal version, which the hardware doesn't support, and
* #NeatVideo denoising takes ages, but it does such a marvellous job for low-light footage from my almost-as-old DSLR.

@ctietze Yes, there are some graphic glitches in Light Mode, similar to what you see with #OpenCoreLegacyPatcher installed machines.
I suppose the VM graphical rendering in not 100% ready for #macOS #Tahoe (probably due to the new #Metal version).

@rjfaas having just used #OpenCoreLegacyPatcher on my old iMac I found this part amusing: "It’d also keep iMacs useful even when their specs inevitably become outdated". Unfortunately that is not something Apple cares about.

Very impressed so far with #OpenCoreLegacyPatcher. I installed it on my old 2015 iMac who's internal drive struggled to boot, giving the spinning rainbow cursor constantly.

I've just put Sequoia on an external SSD and it runs nearly as well as my M3 iMac.

Only downside so far is despite following all instructions for getting Universal Control working, I can't 🙁 and it's a really neat feature.

Hey #linux folk, I have an old 2015 iMac that stopped working a while ago. I think the internal drive crapped out.

I was thinking of putting #OpenCoreLegacyPatcher on an external SSD but I've heard it can get slow so then I started looking at Linux instead.

I'd be using it as a media/Jellyfin server mainly, but wanted to see if it'd be possible to run Linux on an external drive (media on another separate drive) and bypass the internal drive completely?

Also it would have to be pretty lightweight, I looked at Debian but don't have experience with that.

I thought of using #OpenCoreLegacyPatcher but the only feedback I have is not successful (thanks @gmembre). Today, the laptop is running #Ubuntu. I have installed an M.2 NVMe adapter for the new system. I've kept the old SSD with the old system. Any feedback to share?

J’ai réfléchi à utiliser #OpenCoreLegacyPatcher mais le seul retour d’expérience que j’ai (celui de @gmembre) n’est pas concluant. Aujourd’hui la machine tourne sur #Ubuntu. I had this running macOS 13 Ventura before I switched to Linux. That is also was relatively straightforward and you need do nothing special to make the Camera work:

One of my colleagues works remotely and used to do occasional testing on a #Mac. However the Mac he had was left lying around since it was stuck on 10.13 and hence has not been getting security updates since November 12, 2020 and has not even been usable with Vivaldi for a long while also.

We are sending him a newer Apple Silicon based Mac (since that would also allow easier testing of internal builds using iOS simulator) but in the mean time I pointed out that he could upgrade his current machine with #OpenCoreLegacyPatcher, despite Apple preventing upgraded via the regular method.

He went all the way from #macOS #HighSierra 10.13, right up to macOS 15 #Sequoia without any obvious issues. Once again, it is silly that Apple is letting these working machines just be wasted.

FWIW, this old Intel MacBook did get Safari updated yesterday, after using #OCLP to update to Ventura.

Had it been down to Apple, this machine could have been a botnet now for all they care. 😢

Also, it is Safari this time and what if it was another part of the OS? Again Monterey has received its last updates already. If you have a pre-2017 Mac and don't fancy #OpenCoreLegacyPatcher and do not want (or cannot afford) new hardware perhaps also consider Linux

If you are a #Safari user and have an "older" Mac (before 2017) stuck running macOS 12 (Monterey) or older, keep in mind you are NOT getting critical security updates, which includes the OS bundled software, such as Safari.

You need to update your whole OS. And sadly for many Mac users that officially translates to buy a new Mac.

If you cannot update your macOS "officially", consider #OpenCoreLegacyPatcher but at the very least switch browser in the mean time. @Vivaldi would work for example… just saying 🤷

Still fixing up old Macs. This is my wife's old 2015 MacBook that has been cleaned up and had it's battery replaced (I'm testing that now).

Currently it has macOS 12 (Monterey), which stopped getting security updates from Apple in July of this year. That will not do, so the next step will be using #OpenCoreLegacyPatcher to let me update to a supported macOS or alternatively, I install a modern Linux on it.

Well, well… well. This is an Apple iMac "Core i5" 2.9 21.5" (Late 2013).

The most recent macOS this is supposed to be able to run is 10.15 Catalina.

And yet… I just installed macOS 12 Monterey. And indeed I could have installed something even newer.

I updated the @Vivaldi page on "Future browser updates on macOS 10.15 (Catalina) being discontinued, due to lack of support from Apple".

We now list an additional option for users who find themselves in this unfortunate position: "OpenCore Legacy Patcher".

Spending an evening with an old computer isn't always fun. It can be hours and hours of installations, downloads and just waiting for stuff to happen.

My 2010 #MacbookAir needed partition resizing (for Haiku, fingers crossed) and then #OpenCoreLegacyPatcher to install #macOS monterey
Avoiding newer macos because of non existing USB1.1 for touchpad/keyboard.

And then Appstore only lets me download latest and not compatible Xcode. Always something...

#OpenCoreLegacyPatcher is such an amazing project. I'm not ready yet to give up some of my old Macs and this project keeps them alive and up-to-date. I really hope that a similar project will appear for the ARM64 Macs in the future.

A software update from #UltramarineLinux and suddenly the on-board Wi-Fi of my 2014 #MacBook Air is working again! No more USB adapter required!

Meanwhile, on the very same computer, an update to Open Core Legacy Patcher has left macOS #Ventura in a non-bootable state.

I only really use #macOS nowadays for Keynote and the #Affinity suite, and I’ve found a replacement for Keynote that suits my needs. Now if #Serif would just get on board the #Linux train…

Earlier this year, I updated my father’s 2013 MacBook Air to #Sonoma using OpenCore Legacy Patcher. Everything worked well until my father decided to install a macOS update today. Now it gets stuck during boot. Verbose boot reveals many error messages with the last message being ‘Couldn’t alloc class “AppleIPAppender”’. I guess we now need to create a new USB installer and reinstall a patched Sonoma? 😔 #Apple #macOS #MacBookAir #OpenCoreLegacyPatcher

@82mhz @in_sympathy Running Sonoma on a late-2012 MBP thanks to the amazing #OpenCoreLegacyPatcher. It‘s maxed to 8GB of memory and an SSD. Quite usable all things considered, but somewhat “stuttery“ at times which seems to indicate that upgrading from Sonoma may not be as satisfactory an experience.
