  1. I got an #OCLP install of #macOS #Sequoia running on the 2012 iMac, using an external 120GB SATA SSD in a Thunderbolt 2 enclosure.

It "runs", but boy is it slow! BlackMagic Disk Speed Test reckons it's writing at ~130MB/s, and reading at ~170MB/s.

I split the internal Fusion Drive and get ~200MB/s write/230MB/s read from the SSD, 200MB/s read, 170MB/s write. I have a 512GB NVMe SSD in a USB3 enclosure and get 400MB/s r/w on that, but the iMac won't boot from it 😕

  2. Ah, result, Lightroom Classic 13 seems to work perfectly on #OCLP Seqouia with it's crappy Kepler GFX chip 👍

  3. Well, further adventures with the #OCLP iMac running Sequoia are promising. It's settled down now iCloud indexing has finished (medianalysisd and suggestd were hammering it).

I've installed Lightroom on it; there's a little graphical corruption every now and again, but it disappears after a second or two.

  8. @thiccpaws Puh… Did you upgrade to Tahoe? I think that’s yet still not supported by #OCLP. Or am I wrong? My old MacBook Air suggested to me that I upgrade recently. Thank god I didn’t.

Do you have your hard drive encrypted?

    #oclp #macos #intelmac

  10. @orangeacme bad news! probably supports it!

  11. To my #macos bubble: I am running current macOS on my 2013 iMac using #oclp. I have a problem in that iCloud drive seems not be syncing. Just stays at 0kB and no network traffic. I restarted bird, but didn't help. Any other ideas?

EDIT: as if by magic, the Mac started syncing again. Who knows why it sometimes does this...

  12. Ich habe meinen 14 Jahre alten Mac Mini neues Leben eingehaucht, obwohl Apple sagt, dass der das nicht packt. 😂🤭😇

    #IT #refurbish #MacOSX #OCLP

  14. I love #OCLP #opencorelegacypatcher

But the fact most upates need at least two attemps is slightly annoying.

    - #elgato StreamDeck

  16. @baggetun And yet it can keep on going.

I am also running an Apple machine right now from 2015 to reply to you. It was stuck on Catalina. I switched to Linux, though it too can run the latest macOS if you use #OCLP.

It is not obsolete yet, despite what Apple thinks. It runs great. I did replace the battery (which is a job and a half, lots of screws and it was also glued in place) but it now gets around 7 hours of battery life again. I also replaced the charger (it had a cable chewed up by my cat) with a USB-C to Magsafe 2 cable that have it pluged into a cheap 65W USB-C PD charger.

We really need to cut back on #eWaste. Apple, a $3.59 trillion company with massive profits, could do a hell of a lot more here. If they supported them longer I am convinced that people would keep using their old machines or pass/sell them on to someone who might. There is a lot to one of these laptops and they sell millions. It would make a difference. In addition, things like the battery should also be easier to replace and more standardised.

  17. One of my colleagues works remotely and used to do occasional testing on a #Mac. However the Mac he had was left lying around since it was stuck on 10.13 and hence has not been getting security updates since November 12, 2020 and has not even been usable with Vivaldi for a long while also.

We are sending him a newer Apple Silicon based Mac (since that would also allow easier testing of internal builds using iOS simulator) but in the mean time I pointed out that he could upgrade his current machine with #OpenCoreLegacyPatcher, despite Apple preventing upgraded via the regular method.

He went all the way from #macOS #HighSierra 10.13, right up to macOS 15 #Sequoia without any obvious issues. Once again, it is silly that Apple is letting these working machines just be wasted.

    #OCLP

  18. At least one other user who somehow got past the WiFi problems on install (maybe they used alt networking connection via WiFi or ethernet adapter 🤷) having harware issues with the Camera and Keyboard backlight (both of which work with Ubuntu). The post is two years old and these issues might now be resolved but given my WiFi installer issues, I could not count on it. So this does not seem worth the hassle when Ubuntu works out of the box and even macOS Ventura could be installed (again with no obvious downsides) via #OCLP.

I'm putting this down as a fail for Google. Still at least they tried, unlike Apple, who consider this machine eWaste.

  19. @baggetun I do have a couple lying around somewhere but I cannot really be bothered. It runs Ubuntu 24.04 without such issues and can even run macOS Ventura via #OCLP (again with no obvious problems)

This was just about curisoity to see if it was possible and while it might work if I force it a little there is no need to do so when better options exist.

I am not the only one with this issue (see the attached first image). And people who did get it installed had other issues, e.g. no working Camera (see the second image). Perhaps that is working now but judging by the semi working wifi, I have my doubts. Also it is not a great OS option. Again this was more about satisying my curiosity and I did, at best it is a subpar experience because you need to work around issues with the installer. 🤷

  20. FWIW, this old Intel MacBook did get Safari updated yesterday, after using #OCLP to update to Ventura.

Had it been down to Apple, this machine could have been a botnet now for all they care. 😢

    #eWaste #OpenCoreLegacyPatcher

  21. I seriously love OpenCore Legacy Patcher (OCLP) . Given my old 2012 Mac Mini new life and works surprising well.

Photo shows my old 2012 Mac Mini running the latest MacOS Sequoia 15.0. Apple stopped supporting this Model with new updates from Version 10 back in 2018.

  22. @matthias I have found @zenbrowser to be a breath of fresh air.

I used to be a BIG Apple fan, but but ever since they pivoted to services, the newer OS versions keep taking more control & privacy AWAY from me, and I refuse to buy newer Macs as they are non-repairable and non-upgradeable.

I still run macOS for the suite, but it's become pretty rare. is now my daily driver. It runs better than macOS under , and my computers are MINE again.

  23. 2012 #MacBookAir upgraded to Ventura thanks to OpenCore Legacy Patcher

    #OCLP

  24. @masters Yes, #OCLP and the people behind it are just amazing. Got a 2012 MBP, too, running Sonoma.😄

    #macOS #MacBookPro

  25. @risottobias This is the one thing I really dislike about #apple : quick/planned hardware #obsolesence.
They are doing rather good on #ios (way better than #android support) but this can be improved.
On #macos, #OpenCoreLegacyPatcher (#oclp ) proves hardware support is voluntarily removed with each new release.
On both sides, they can provide longer software support even if some new features are not available on older hardware. 1/

  26. I own a lot of backup software - #Chronosync which I use to synchronise data between directories and for building updates to my EPUB books, #SuperDuper! Which I use to clone HFS+ #TimeMachine volumes, and now #CarbonCopyCloner, for its easy “add a recovery partition to a bootable cloned volume” function.

Common to all these apps, is fantastic customer support, and longevity of function, typified by #CCC just releasing a update to fix a bug specific to #OCLP using Macs.
