2️⃣ Store them on 2 different media types
1️⃣ Keep 1 copy off-site

Hard drives fail. Laptops get stolen. Cloud services go down. Your data is worth more than your equipment. Take care of it and spend some thoughts how to manage it.

I was only using my #Gmail account for my planning work as a volunteer because the person in charge had issues with my former email account. She *ignored all* my notifications about my new @Tutanota account and kept sending emails to Gmail. I also sent her this link: https://tuta.com/blog/degoogle-list
No reaction.

I’ve just pulled the plug, deleted Gmail. Now I’m curious to see what happens. Some people have to learn it the hard way.

This is, why I hate it when I am forced to "share" the keys to my castles via the cloud of password-managers like 1Password. Most local (WiFi) sync suck, or simply are dysfunctional (yes, 1Password, looking at you!). 🏠 Homelab Backup Evolution! 🏠

Following the "3-2-1 is the minimum" rule, I've expanded my VPS container backup strategy:

✅ Hetzner Cloud (Borg) → Offsite long-term storage
✅ Synology NAS (rsync) → Local fast recovery

The new setup does nightly automated syncs of all /opt/containers/ data to my Synology - with deduplication and all the bells and whistles! 📦

Particularly clever: hardlinks for space-efficient snapshots and morning email reports. Now I know right with my coffee ☕ whether all backups ran cleanly.

Lesson learned: Cloud-only is good, but having a local NAS mirror for quick restores is pure gold! 💪

Australia's strict data retention laws mean we have many honeypots for hackers. After years of hack after hack, with a raft of highly sensitive data exposed, this is what the govt do—Ban under 16s from social media, which is another way of mandating people share their ID with social media companies.

The eSafety Commissioner doesn't seem particularly concerned with data safety. Commissioner of Moral Panics might be more accurate.
