  1. @1password For me, #1Password died the moment it went subscription-only. Been using #keepassxc-compatible #keepassiumpro ever since on all my devices with a self-hosted database on a #raspberrypi, which is running 24/7 anyway, and never looked back 👍

  2. @haraldschirmer Danke für Deinen Bericht! Steht bei mir jetzt auch an. Endlich weg von #1Password

Vereinfacht gesagt bekommt jede Website zwei digitale Schlüssel:

  10. I might be hitting my breaking point with :1password: @1password — the browser extension reliability has taking a huge hit over the past year. This makes me very sad after being a loyal customer & advocate since early 2008.

I don't know if it's iOS 26.4 but the Safari extension loads maybe 50% of the time now—thankfully iOS AutoFill can step-in when this happens.

macOS browser extensions are a bit better—Safari being the worst, occasionally taking up to 10 seconds to load/unlock. I often end-up relaunching my browser to get the extension to work again.

✏️ Edit: Glad they are aware!

  11. 1Password adds direct credential import via the Credential Exchange Protocol, plus smarter login creation on iOS and Android for more seamless vault organization. 🔑
I recommend using a password manager daily to keep passwords secure and simplify everyday login management. 🛡️

  14. This is what happens in the #1Password web app when I click the "Manage access" button while viewing the contents of a vault. Specifically, it pops up an incompletely rendered modal which is supposed to be the access management modal, and it stays there, incompletely rendered, forever. Sweet.

  16. Weekly output: tech for creators, Xfinity Mobile plans, how 1Password eyes AI, cheaper NextGen TV tuners

This coming week will not be like the last six and change because my calendar has me sleeping in my own bed every night. That is an exciting prospect after a string of trips that took me to Austin, L.A., Chicago, Boston, San Francisco, San Jose and Las Vegas… but this workweek isn’t free of travel, as I’m taking a day trip to NYC for Uber’s Go-Get press event Wednesday.

4/21/2026: Out and About with Jefferson and Jules, NAB Show

I went to the National Association of Broadcasters’ conference for the first time since 2015 for about the same reason as that previous trip: speaking on a panel. This one featured my former USA Today colleague Jefferson Graham and travel journalist Juliana Broste (the last name rhymes with “frosty”) talking about the tools they use to take and share photos and videos from interesting places. Having two people well-versed in speaking on camera on the same stage made my job as a panel moderator easy.

4/22/2026: Comcast Adds 2 Premium Xfinity Mobile Plans With Global Roaming Included, PCMag

This post was kind of a disaster, in that Comcast’s embargoed press release left out important details about these new plans and then my PR contact provided also-unhelpful answers to my questions. After seeing the details of these plans Wednesday morning, I rewrote a large chunk of the post from the United lounge at LAS before boarding my flight out of Vegas.

4/23/2026: 1Password sees AI as both threat and tool, Fast Company

I interviewed 1Password’s new chief technology officer Nancy Wang in the speaker lounge at HumanX in San Francisco as that room was getting closed down at the end of that conference. I did not write up the interview that night, as I was meeting an old friend for dinner, and then did not get around to writing the story on the flight home.

4/24/2026: NextGen TV Backers Aim to Advance the Standard With Cheaper Converter Boxes, PCMag

I returned to the topic of this upgrade to broadcast TV (also known as “ATSC 3.0”) for the first time since 2024 (I think) to cover an initiative aired at NAB to lower the cost of watching NextGen TV broadcasts on sets without compatible tuners. Most new TVs still fall under that description, which is not something I would have predicted four years ago.

  17. Today I find myself in discussions with #1password support, trying to explain through them to their developers that hard-coding window dimensions on the web is just asking for trouble.

  18. The #1Password app on #Linux has a configuration setting you can enable to tell it to start on login, and it works… sometimes. And sometimes it doesn't, and you have to launch the app by hand after you log in.
(I'm running into this issue on GNOME on Debian Testing.)
    I've reported the problem to 1Password. 🤷

  19. is great for personal passwords, but its CLI falls apart for dev secrets: no project structure, prompt fatigue, all-or-nothing access. I moved to . Do you know something better? Share it!

  20. @MrRooni Thank you!

And to be clear, I'm not critiquing the experience with #1Password's support team, which is in fact quite good so far. Responses are quick and to the point, and the bug seems to be some corner case. But rather how my brain is wired, and mostly the state of large corporate-produced software.

  22. Finally made myself prepare and send a follow-up on a #1Password bug on #macOS with hardware security keys. Recorded them a video (+ the usual debug logs), hope this helps.

I think I ranted about this before, but I get so quickly demotivated when reporting bugs. I have enough energy for the initial report, but the follow-ups (especially when they can't reproduce) make me lose all interest. Companies having layers of people between me and developers make it all the more tedious.

    Produktiv heute ...

  24. My first purchase of #1Password was 2008-11-15. My last purchase was 1Pv7 2018-06-08. In that time I paid them $275.33 as I paid for each new upgrade. v7 allowed me to have local vaults and pay once. I was their customer to lose but when they decided that 1Pv8 was going to be cloud only and subscription only, they lost me.

The self-hosted #Bitwarden / #Vaultwarden transition was not too painful but I do miss the much more sophisticated 1P UI (at least until v7. I have no experience with v8).

  25. You moved your #SSH keys into #1Password like a responsible adult. Then ssh-copy-id said "no identities found." Then ssh-add agreed. Then an error message ended up inside authorized_keys on your server — and #SSH silently ignored it.

    Imagine debugging that at 11pm.

Wrote up what's actually happening with the two competing agents on #macOS and the one-liner that fixes it.

  26. @kDelta It's good to point out the distinction between storing biometrics and what Apple does. I guess each device has its own set of unlock stuff stored in its secure enclave - which IS great.

Apple servers have gone down too much and there's too many great things about #1password for me to switch to Apple Passwords. Passkey use is a separate issue. The one I was forced to get - does work well.

1PW is owned by a Canadian company - but they have employees all over the world I believe.

  27. @kDelta @rmondello Great … so do you make it easy to remember or write it down? 😖

Seems like an incomplete way to manage passwords especially compared to #1Password

There must be more to the answer - like that screen would have a spot to enter biometrics for a passkey or it will someday. Still, I don't think macOS is all the way up at that point so I'm not sure how a totally passkey world works there. Maybe you unlock another device first?

  29. I've been running Bitwarden with a self-hosted Vaultwarden instance for a few weeks now, and it certainly looks like it can replace 1Password for me.

Good thing I was already checking out alternatives, because I don’t care about any of the things that they say are causing the price increase (“AI-powered item naming”, really?).

  31. Very excited to have gotten through a pretty big lift + refactor in the #homelab over the last few weeks. For a while, I’ve had one foot in my old, disorganized, scattered Docker services, and one foot in a new, fully automated, #gitops pseudo-prod for home.

Well, no more. I’ve cleaned up all of the old shit. Centralized config, linted, backed up, refactored, and smoke tested the core platform. It completely spins up and down, with one Playbook, data fully backed up, etc.

    Hardware:
    - 3x #amd mini PC’s w/32GB RAM
    - #synology DS1813+
    - 1x Intel miniPC for #homeassistant OS
    - TP-Link #Omada gateway, PoE switch, and AP’s

My core stack is, going from hardware to workload lifecycle and access:
    - #proxmox
    - #fedora #fedora_coreos VM’s
    - #k3s #Rancher #kubernetes
    - #nfs subdir provisioner
    - #ansible
    - #argocd
    - #Tailscale
    - #1password Kubernetes Operator
    - #velero

I just did a DR drill with my kids’ #minecraft servers, and it worked great, and I’m super pumped with #selfhosting #paperlessngx!

Those are the first family-facing apps that I’ve deployed, and I’ve got a laundry list of more services on the way.

It was far, far more work than it probably needed to be…but I also can fully trust it with our most important personal docs, which was priority one.

  33. Why do we live in a world where #PasswordManagers have celebrity investors and are setting themselves up for "waves of disruption"? I want to you to competently store my passwords and let me use them on two devices. Why do you need $950,000,000 of investment to do that?

  34. Well #PasswordManagers were not as secure as we all thought.
All Password Managers that use a browser add-on/plugin for auto-fill functionality are susceptible to #ClickJacking security vulnerabilities that could be exploited to steal account credentials.
It works on all of them:
    #LastPass
    #Bitwarden
    #iCloudPasswords
    #Enpass
    #1Password
    #NordPass
    #ProtonPass
    #Keeper
    #Dashlane
& yes even the one I use #KeePassXC
    Some have pushed out updates.
