It's storytelling with capital letters, but I do appreciate the reference-fest in Stranger Things. It made me pick this one out of my bookshelf, it's the norwegian translation of A Wrinkle in Time that I read as a kid. It's printed in 1980, I guess I read it a year or two later. Recently learned that Half Price Books in Berkeley is closing on Nov. 30th due to a lease dispute with the landlord.
This is a real tragedy—Half Price is one of the best bookstores in the Bay Area. Many gems on my bookshelf came from Half Price.
I've long tired of great shops and stores across the Bay Area closing due to landlord rent increases w/ no property improvements. This is the kind of thing that makes me sympathetic to Georgism.

I have a habit of collecting memories. A few days ago, while organizing my bookshelf, I found a note I wrote to myself just before my college entrance exams. It was a short page, filled with emotions I can hardly touch anymore.

#ScribesAndMakers 3.6 — Tell us about a book you go back and read over and over. What do you love about it?
(I broke something on my bookshelf just to retrieve these two books, so I hope this post is worth the strife. Crystals and glass went everywhere.)
Let me preface this by saying that I am a huge fan of Tolkien as both a human being and as a writer. My library has an entire section for Tolkien's Legendarium. It's overflowing at this point.
On the left we have my own copy of The Silmarillion, and on the right is my father's. He took that book across the country, while backpacking and later while living in his VW bus. It's special to me. The book, as a whole, was what drew me to writing in the first place. As a child, my dad first read The Hobbit to me before bed, and then The Lord of the Rings after. It was off to the races from that point on. The Lost Tales and The Unfinished Tales followed. When I got my hands on The Silmarillion, it sealed the deal for me. This is a comfort book for me, even though I cry buckets at the myths and tales within. That's okay, though.

Pretty good evening. Got the missus' new 3d printer set up and printing, made progress on my bookshelf speaker restoration, and settling in with a Moosehead and listening to a little Crime of the Century (off the server, don't have the vinyl yet).
And the temps swung 22 degrees today... so that's a win too right? :| (-22C -> 0C)

RIP David Lodge, beloved #author. I first came across Small World in its television adaptation before reading the book. It's still on my bookshelf today. A slightly romanticised view of academia. Or as this obituary puts it:
It was his campus novels that captured my heart. His trilogy Changing Places (1975), Small World (1984) and Nice Work (1988) are now tributes to the buoyant, optimistic world of well-respected and funded postwar academia.

Came in to work early on #DayofDH2024 to get some things done before the departmental staff lunch then a trip to LA. The books on my bookshelf with googly eyes made me smile; a small act of whimsical resistance to a very serious proposal about putting books into conversation with one another.

I finished #AGameOfThrones last week. So now I'm going to jump back over to nonfiction, and more specifically #USPresidents.
I've had #TheLeadersWeDeserved on my bookshelf for about a year, and it finally feels like the right time to dive into it.
It's very large. And it's very very....dry. Still, looking forward to it greatly.
