It's mid-October, so it's time for your annual reminder that people giving away drugs for free (like, by disguising them as Halloween candy and giving them to trick-or-treaters) are even more mythical than ghosts, vampires, and werewolves.
Drug dealers are trying to *make money* from drugs by *selling* them.
Children notoriously have very little money to spend.

#wordweavers #writing 5. Share a book by an indie author that you love.
Most of what I read are translations which means they are from small press, not indie. But looking at my bookshelf and ereader there is one indie author I have tons of stuff from. Tara A. Devlin. A rich source of all things creepy and Japanese

Help me out with context for a podcast story, referencing urban/Contemporary myths:
Does anyone over the age of 30 know about slenderman, enough to recognize the silhouette?Does anyone under the age of 30 know about the Blair Witch Project, enough to recognize one of those twig figures?
(Horror isn't my thing; podcast is about wildlife)

The myth about swallowing spiders while sleeping - journey down the rabbit hole
In the early days of the internet a story went round, and still does, that on average people swallow 8 spiders a year.in their sleep.
Despite this being thoroughly debunked, this still surfaces as a fact every ounce in a while.
scientificamerican.com/article…
People who have investigated where this story came from ended up with the name Lisa Birgit Holst. Lisa worked for a magazine called PC Professional as a columnist. In 1993 she wrote an article in which she mentioned this fact. She references a 1954 book "Insect Fact and Folklore" which states on page 24 that people swallow 8 spiders a year in their sleep.
However it seems that the lovely Lisa was a bit of a trickster and made up loads of nonsense to test the gullibility of readers, or because she was bored. The "Insect Fact and Folklore" book does exist, however it contains nothing about swallowing spiders.
Various articles still cite Lisa Birgit Holst as the instigator of the myth. If you are any good at anagrams have a go with "Lisa Birgit Holst".

Unfortunately it is not possible to link to this original article or a copy of it. Not because it wasn't saved for prosperity, but because neither it nor Lisa Birgit Holst (the middle name is important) existed. Also, there was no magazine called PC Professional.
How deep does this hoax go?
A myth started by a non-existent columnist in a non-existent article in a non-existent magazine. At one time even the esteemed Snopes had been hoodwinked by "Lisa" and didn't realise the total fabrication.
Many people are still looking the source and some think it can be narrowed down to April 2001.
If you fancy a quest others are searching...

Scientist Dr. Carl Hart, author of the book "Drug Use for Grown-ups," helps debunk (and confirm!) some common myths about drugs... Is marijuana really a gateway drug? Is the opioid crisis getting worse? Are drugs more addictive than alcohol?
