Durante catorce años, a Sophie Chotek le recordaron constantemente que, para la corte imperial, nunca estaría a la altura de su marido.

Había nacido en 1868 en Stuttgart, pero pertenecía a una antigua familia noble de Bohemia.
Su padre era el conde Bohuslav Chotek y su madre, la condesa Wilhelmine Kinsky.
Recibió la educación propia de una joven aristócrata: idiomas, música, etiqueta y una estricta formación religiosa.
Nadie imaginaba que acabaría enamorándose del hombre destinado a gobernar el Imperio austrohúngaro.

Conoció al archiduque Franz Ferdinand mientras trabajaba como dama de compañía de la archiduquesa Isabel de Croÿ.
Al principio, muchos pensaron que el heredero estaba interesado en una de las hijas de la archiduquesa, pero la realidad era muy distinta: la mujer de la que se había enamorado era Sophie.

Aquella relación provocó un auténtico terremoto en la familia imperial.

El emperador Francisco José I se negó durante años a autorizar la boda.
El problema no era que Sophie fuera plebeya —no lo era—, sino que no pertenecía a una casa real reinante.
Finalmente aceptó el matrimonio, pero con una condición humillante: sería un matrimonio morganático.
Eso significaba que Sophie nunca sería emperatriz y que sus hijos jamás podrían heredar el trono.

La humillación no terminó ahí.

Durante catorce años no se le permitió sentarse junto a su esposo en público.
No podía compartir su carruaje en los actos oficiales.
En los banquetes debía ocupar un lugar muy alejado del heredero, y archiduquesas y condesas de rango superior pasaban delante de ella en todas las ceremonias.
Incluso cuando llegaban juntos a un acto, muchas veces tenían que separarse antes de entrar.

Franz Ferdinand soportaba aquellas normas con enorme disgusto.
Siempre que podía intentaba compensarla en privado y defendía su dignidad frente a la corte, aunque sabía que no podía cambiar el rígido protocolo impuesto por su tío, el emperador.

Tuvieron tres hijos y formaron una familia sorprendentemente unida para los estándares de la realeza europea.
Quienes los conocieron aseguraban que eran un matrimonio muy cariñoso y que el archiduque encontraba en Sophie la tranquilidad que nunca halló en Viena.

La visita a Sarajevo del 28 de junio de 1914 fue una de las escasas ocasiones en las que Sophie pudo acompañarlo oficialmente, porque Franz Ferdinand asistía como inspector general del ejército y no como representante ceremonial de la corte.
Además, aquel día coincidía con el aniversario de su juramento matrimonial.

Sabían que el viaje podía ser peligroso.

Esa misma mañana lanzaron una bomba contra su automóvil.
Salieron ilesos, pero decidieron continuar con el programa previsto.
Poco después, cuando el coche cambió de ruta para visitar a los heridos del primer atentado, el conductor tomó por error el recorrido previsto inicialmente.
Al detenerse para corregir la maniobra, el automóvil quedó justo frente a Gavrilo Princip, que creía haber perdido su oportunidad.
Aquella coincidencia cambió la historia del siglo XX.

El joven nacionalista serbobosnio aprovechó la oportunidad.

Disparó dos veces.

Una bala alcanzó a Sophie en el abdomen.
La otra hirió mortalmente a Franz Ferdinand en el cuello.
Mientras ella se desangraba, él solo repetía una frase: **"Sopherl, Sopherl, no mueras. Vive por nuestros hijos."**

Ella murió pocos minutos después.
Él la siguió casi de inmediato.

Ni siquiera después de su muerte recibió el mismo trato que el resto de la familia imperial.
Al no ser considerada miembro de una dinastía reinante, Sophie no pudo ser enterrada en la Cripta Imperial de Viena.
Franz Ferdinand había previsto esa posibilidad años antes y ordenó que ambos descansaran juntos en el castillo de Artstetten, donde todavía reposan.

La tragedia no terminó con ellos.
Sus hijos crecieron sin padres y, décadas después, durante la anexión de Austria por la Alemania nazi, sus dos hijos varones, Maximilian y Ernst, fueron detenidos por la Gestapo y enviados al campo de concentración de Dachau por oponerse al régimen.

La muerte de Sophie y Franz Ferdinand fue la chispa que desencadenó la Primera Guerra Mundial.
Sin embargo, detrás de aquel acontecimiento histórico hubo también una historia de amor que desafió durante años las rígidas normas de una de las cortes más poderosas de Europa.

According to the Italian publication La Repubblica, “tourists” paid up to 100,000 euros ($116,000), adjusted for current inflation rates and currency change, as the euro was not introduced until 1999, to join trips to Sarajevo to commit the killings.

Gavazzeni claims that participants would be given a price list for the type of kill that foreigners would pay for, including to target children, which cost the most, then men, women and elderly people, who could be killed free of charge.

He said the #Italians met in the city of Trieste before travelling to #Belgrade, where #Bosnian Serb soldiers escorted them to hills overlooking #Sarajevo. It is believed that citizens of the United States and #Russia also took part in the practice.
In 2007, former #US Marine John Jordan testified before the International Criminal Tribunal for the Former #Yugoslavia that “tourist shooters” had come to Sarajevo.

#Serbia has denied any involvement in the alleged scheme, but investigators believe that #Serbian intelligence services were aware of the tourist trips.

C'est comme la chasse aux trophées : un peu hors de portée des petites bourses, on passe juste du massacre d'espèces très menacées à celui des panou-panpou. Ça reste dans des tailles voisines. Normal, me direz-vous, les petites bourses c'est plutôt côté cibles.
