TITLE: Oxytocin amplifies negative childhood memories for anxiously attached adults

    URL: psypost.org/oxytocin-amplifies

Oxytocin is often called the “love hormone,” but it can actually make childhood memories seem more negative for people who struggle with relationship anxiety. A new experiment demonstrates that oxytocin amplifies the emotional intensity of social cues rather than simply promoting warm feelings. The findings were published in the journal Emotion.

Human infants rely entirely on caregivers for survival, leading to an innate drive to form close bonds. These early childhood experiences shape a person’s attachment style, which acts as a mental blueprint for future relationships. Psychologists refer to these blueprints as internal working models. They represent a person’s core beliefs about whether other people will be available and responsive when needed.

Securely attached people generally expect others to be reliable and supportive. Anxiously attached people crave closeness but constantly fear abandonment, often hyper-focusing on relationship threats. Avoidantly attached people distance themselves from intimacy to prevent disappointment, shutting down their emotional needs when they feel vulnerable.

Researchers have long studied the biological systems that drive these social bonds. Oxytocin is a hormone and chemical messenger heavily involved in childbirth, nursing, and pair bonding. In studies of mice and sheep, oxytocin proved necessary for mothers to recognize their offspring and for adults to remember other members of their species.

Early human experiments suggested the hormone universally enhanced trust, cooperation, and empathy. This research helped popularize the idea that oxytocin is a simple prosocial booster.

More recent evidence suggests a nuanced view called the social salience hypothesis. This concept proposes that oxytocin acts as an emotional amplifier, highlighting social information regardless of whether that information is positive or negative. For instance, in animal models, oxytocin has been shown to enhance the fear response in mice after they experience a social defeat by a more aggressive cage-mate.

Researchers at McGill University, led by Melissa Shemirani and Jennifer A. Bartz, wanted to test this hypothesis by examining how oxytocin influences the emotional quality of attachment memories in humans. They sought to replicate and expand upon a previous experiment that only tested men. The research team recruited 77 male and female participants for a two-part study.

During one visit, participants received a dose of oxytocin via a nasal spray. On their other visit, they received a placebo spray. Neither the participants nor the experimenters knew which spray was administered on a given day. This crossover design allowed the researchers to compare how the same individual responded under both conditions.

After waiting for the hormone to take effect, participants were prompted with attachment-related words, such as “protect” or “upset.” They were asked to retrieve specific childhood memories involving their mothers based on these cues. The experimenters then selected one positive and one negative memory and asked the participants to elaborate on them verbally for a few minutes.

Independent human evaluators read transcripts of the recorded narratives and rated them for positive and negative emotional content. For participants with high attachment anxiety, oxytocin caused them to describe their mothers with more negative and less positive emotion compared to when they received the placebo. This suggests that the hormone amplified their underlying insecurities about relationships.

The researchers also analyzed the memory transcripts using two different computer programs designed to detect emotional tone in written text. One program counted the frequency of emotional words based on a vast dictionary, while the other evaluated grammatical context, such as whether a negative word was modified by another word. These automated tools matched the human evaluators in finding that attachment anxiety shaped how oxytocin affected negative emotional language. In the software analyses, however, the significant effect appeared among participants with low anxiety, for whom oxytocin reduced the negative emotional tone of their memories. The computer programs did not find any measurable differences in positive emotional language.

The research team also looked at participants with avoidant attachment styles, who typically suppress their desire for closeness. Oxytocin did not alter the emotional content of their maternal memories. Following the memory task, participants filled out a questionnaire about how much information they shared with the experimenter and how comfortable they felt doing so.

The results showed that avoidant individuals were generally less willing to reveal personal information. When given oxytocin, these participants became even more reluctant to open up emotionally. The hormone appeared to heighten their natural defensive tendency to distance themselves from intimate disclosures.

Readers should note that these results center entirely on recollections of mothers, who were historically viewed as primary caregivers in early psychology research. The study does not address whether oxytocin would alter memories of fathers or other childhood guardians in the same way. The participant group was also relatively young and predominantly White and Asian, meaning the patterns might look different in older adults or other racial groups.

The discrepancy between human evaluators and computer programs highlights the current limitations of automated text analysis. Software tools often struggle to interpret the mixed emotions typical of personal family histories. A memory about being comforted after a scary event contains negative words, but a human listener can easily recognize the overall positive meaning of the caregiver’s response. Spoken language is also full of tangents and structural quirks that confuse software designed for short written texts.

Finally, the findings indicate that oxytocin is not a universal treatment for relationship struggles or social difficulties. Because the hormone acts as a magnifier for pre-existing social fears, using it in therapeutic settings might require customized supervision. Administering oxytocin without proper guidance could inadvertently increase distress for those who already experience high anxiety in their personal connections.

The study, “Attachment, Oxytocin, and Maternal Recollections: Further Evidence for the Salience Hypothesis,” was authored by Melissa Shemirani, Willis Klein, Jonas P. Nitschke, Sonia A. Krol, Signy Sheldon, and Jennifer A. Bartz.

  3. Are there foods that children simply aren't ready to appreciate? 🤔🍆

This African garden egg is a perfect example for me. When I was little, I couldn't stand it. I didn't even like the thought of it getting into my mouth. 😂

Now? I can eat a dozen of them. I actually love them! 😋

What's even funnier is that my mum told me she disliked them when she was a child too, but today they're one of her favourite foods.

It makes me wonder: are there certain foods that children naturally dislike but learn to appreciate as they grow into adults? Or is it simply that our taste preferences change with age?

If there was a food you hated as a child but now absolutely love, drop it in the replies! 👇

  11. The bit that you skip #230: Kenny Rogers – The Gambler

I always correlate Kenny Rogers with family gatherings. As the youngest kid in my family, I was used to getting squished in the family car, whether precariously placed between my parents and keeping a yoga like position to avoid getting hit by the shift stick, sandwiched between my brothers on the back, or on the large boot with clear windows on the back of the Datsun B210 or the Dart K station wagon.

From the late 70s until 85, we lived in a small colony outside a refinery in Tula. It was peaceful and the place had a communal pool, a golf course, and large palapas for parties. It felt isolating from time to time if you didn’t have friends your age, but still you could socialize quite a bit.

Relatives visiting were always a special ocassion as most of them lived way too far. I’d sometimes wait by the sand dunes and hope to see my maternal grandfather’s Renault 18 on the horizon, making his way to the security booth, all dusty from the trip from Tampico. Other times, it would be several cars as my father’s side was numerous and they’d usually travel in caravan.

Banquets made from barbacoa, fish, or carnitas were the usual fare. I think the poison of choice was either Domeq (brandy) or Bacardí. I don’t remember much tequila being drunk, but beer was always on stock.

My dad used to obsess with a singular song from an artist and play it until the end of times, much to everyone’s chagrin. Weirdly enough, I never got bored with The Gambler, and the LP was a precious acquisition. One time three of his brothers came by for beer and carnitas, they talked about the song’s lyrics in detail and one part always stuck with me.

“And somewhere in the darkness, the gambler, he broke even”. It was the first time I remember my uncles and my dad talked about death. They reminisced about long lost relatives, including my grandfather, whom I never met. One of my uncles was managing the ranch my grandfather owned and always thought of himself as a cowboy, I believe.

A few months later, I would see Kenny Rogers guest starring on The Muppets Show, and of course, The Gambler was part of one of the skits. I know it’s fiction. I know it’s just a simple puppet. But when the gambler muppet passes away peacefully and becomes a ghost, I thought about that grandfather I nevr met and felt overwhelmed by the sadness.

Kenny Rogers has a vast discography, full of memorable singles and collaborations, but for personal reasons, I think The Gambler will always be my number one song of his. That’s why when I needed to quote a Kenny Rogers song in a novel, I chose The Coward of the County, as I didn’t want to attach any character’s path to a song I already had a personal attachment to. I know writers project onto their characters, but for that particular novel, I tried to draw a line in the sand.

  12. Thirty one years ago, I was a mixed race kid from Australia living in post Communist Poland.

In the summer of 1995, I went on a school trip with my Year 2 class.

I have no photos from the trip, only fragments of memories.

Reflecting on those memories through the eyes of an adult, I've done my best to reconstruct them into a retelling.

    This is my report.

  13. When I was six, we had a costume festival at school. I somehow convinced my parents to let me go as a girl (I was AMAB).

People kept asking, "Who are you?" and "Why aren't you wearing a costume?"

I wasn't confused in the slightest. I was exactly who I wanted to be.

It's funny how a tiny childhood memory can spend decades quietly explaining itself. 🌸

(I do have a photo of me that day. Precious. But not for the public, of course :) )

    The whole journey was blissful.

    I sometimes miss my childhood.

  15. Old Aromatherapy: Memory Smells Like Plants

People measure life in years. I believe I have lived mine mostly in fragrances. When I look back, I do not first remember the houses I lived in, the roads I traveled, or the objects I kept. I remember scents. The fragrance of poplar buds announcing spring. The smell of wet oak leaves telling me autumn was already near. The scent of wood smoke carried by a quiet morning breeze, a sign that the atmospheric pressure was changing and that rain would probably follow. Meteorologists have […]

  19. I really miss those childhood days when my mom would gently pat my back to propel me to sleep. Now, sleep won't even come because of how loaded my head is with life. 🤦‍♂️ Normal things, if I even take courage today to tell my mom to pat me to sleep, she will just give me a heavy slap and say, "You are bigger than this!" 💀😂
