  1. I finished Nabokov's "Pnin" last night.

What a delight it was! Funny, clever, and oddly moving.

I would recommend getting hold of the Everyman's Library edition, as the introduction by David Lodge is both informative and perceptive.

  3. My favorite author has now died. I recommend all his novels, which are mostly comedies that treat their characters well.

If you want to start, read his Campus Trilogy:

    Changing Places
    Small World
    Nice Work

  5. RIP David Lodge, beloved #author. I first came across Small World in its television adaptation before reading the book. It's still on my bookshelf today. A slightly romanticised view of academia. Or as this obituary puts it:

It was his campus novels that captured my heart. His trilogy Changing Places (1975), Small World (1984) and Nice Work (1988) are now tributes to the buoyant, optimistic world of well-respected and funded postwar academia.

  7. David Lodge, the British novelist who was best known for his satirical books, has died at age 89. He was nominated for the Booker Prize for his campus novels "Small World" and "Nice Work," and was described by the Times of London as "probably the most distinguished novelist of his generation not to win [the Booker]." Here's @BBCNews's tribute to him.

  11. I just learned that David Lodge has passed on January 1st.

His book "the Art of Fiction" was my introduction to literary studies in college. Since that time, I always followed him from the distance, and I always happily read his texts when I could.

    RIP
