  3. Ah, #BorgBackup, for those who like their backups served with a side of #jargon salad and a sprinkle of #buzzword dressing. 🌟✨ Because who doesn’t want to store their digital clutter under layers of fancy-sounding tech that only 3 people on Reddit pretend to understand? 🤖🔒 Enjoy feeling like a tech wizard while using something that’s basically a glorified zip file with a superiority complex. 🎩🧙‍♂️

  4. ... toll! ich habe es mir sogar aufgeschrieben:

    sudo docker exec -it paperless_ngx-webserver-1 document_exporter ../export

  5. Thinking about setting up a home #borg server on an unused #RaspberyPi 4.

    Questions for the #HiveMind:

    • How much RAM does a borg server need to manage about 3TB of backups?
    • How big of a USB disk do I need for the / partition for RasbperryPi OS with no GUI?
    • Does borg deduplicate files between users' backups, or only within a single user's backups?

  9. Couldn't get back to sleep this morning after waking up in pain, so I took some time to ease the mental pain of keeping track of what's running where in my #homelab with a new #wiki page. Have a look if you're interested in what I'm running across my main #NAS and two Raspberry Pis.

Hopefully this will serve as a reminder of what config files I really need to put in a central location.

I also found and fixed/worked around a nasty bug making #ncdu crash when emoji file names were encountered:

#Borg [1] und #Restic [2] sind zwei mächtige Backup werkzeuge für #Linux, #BSD, #Windows und #MacOs. Sie arbeiten zwar leicht unterschiedlich, erzeugen jedoch beide komprimierte Backups, welche schnell und sicher auch über das Netz verteilt werden können. Borg ist dabei in #Python und Restic in #Golang geschrieben.

I've been using Borg and a friend recommended Kopia. Any recommendations here?

  17. Great, an amazing chain of events and maybe unfortunate UI design in resulted in me deleting our shared addressbook - server side from an ancient instance, no backups (no mercy) of course. My rescue attemps of copying contacts around in (why does 'export' make an effing lossy CSV without avatar!?) just made it worse, 50% of contacts now left.

  19. 🏠 Homelab Backup Evolution! 🏠

Following the "3-2-1 is the minimum" rule, I've expanded my VPS container backup strategy:

✅ Hetzner Cloud (Borg) → Offsite long-term storage
✅ Synology NAS (rsync) → Local fast recovery

The new setup does nightly automated syncs of all /opt/containers/ data to my Synology - with deduplication and all the bells and whistles! 📦

Particularly clever: hardlinks for space-efficient snapshots and morning email reports. Now I know right with my coffee ☕ whether all backups ran cleanly.

Lesson learned: Cloud-only is good, but having a local NAS mirror for quick restores is pure gold! 💪

How do you solve this in your setups? Also multi-tier or everything to cloud?

  20. #DigitalIndependenceDay meets #WorldBackupDay (March 31st)! Backups are key to #digital #sovereignty. My 3-2-1 strategy: 3 copies, 2 media, 1 offsite — no #hyperscaler needed. I recently migrated from #BorgBackup to #Restic: better multi-repo flexibility, same solid encryption and deduplication. Offsite storage goes to a #Hetzner Storage Box, which is significantly cheaper than #AWS #S3 and the data remains in #Europe.

The system's running flawlessly, and BorgBackup is currently restoring all my documents to the freshly formatted drives. #GNU #Linux #FreeSoftware #SoftwareFreedom

  25. Backup strategy: (note that this device has two NVMe drive bays (one Linux install each) and one 2.5" HDD/SSD bay)

    • Timeshift to record on-boot / on-hook (aka apt / pacman invocations) events to btrfs snapshots
    • Borg to backup critical folders (things required to be functional like, say, ~/.ssh as an example) every hour to local HDD
    • urbackup to take file-level backups every 6 hours, and block-level backups every 7 days (incremental, full every 7 days / 30 days), uploaded to my server-side (when connected to WWAN this is paused)
    • One additional watcher script that will enable a 6-hour Timeshift task if it detects that the latest urbackup run was more than 24 hours ago, just to ensure full-FS backups, even if I'm without internet or on mobile data.

  26. @luc For this server, I am using (wrapped in ). Originally, it used , but the pruning ended up using too much RAM (but restic has improved this, and I've upgraded from a 4GB system to 32GB since then, so maybe I'll switch back to restic or sometime soon, since I found out that duplicity does not back up ACLs...).

I'm also still using restic (with a custom script) for my laptop backups, and borg (with borgmatic) for some other servers/raspberry pis.
