I've followed @stefano 's excellent guide https://it-notes.dragas.net/2024/08/21/automating-zfs-snapshots-for-peace-of-mind/ to setup automatic ZFS snapshots on my laptop and servers using zfs-autobackup (https://github.com/psy0rz/zfs_autobackup ).

But there's one thing I'm not quite sure about: if I use zfs-autobackup to make a periodic remote backup from my laptop to my server, what kind of retention scheme would make sense?

Let's say I'd like to make daily backups of my laptop to the server, and keep 7 daily backups for a week, one backup for every month for a year, and keep a yearly backup for 5 years. In zfs-autobackup syntax, it would be "1d1w,1m1y,1y5y" if I'm correct. But the backup server is also automatically snapshotted. So where do I put the retention policy? My gut says something like "1d1w" from the laptop and then "1d1w,1m1y,1y5y" on the backup server should do the trick, but I'm a little bit confused by the double snapshots.

I'm using NextCloud AIO with S3 as primary storage, and now I'm trying to figure out the best backup strategy. I want to ensure that I’m backing up both the database and any other important configurations/data. AIO has Borgbackup built-in, but since my primary storage is S3, I'm not sure if it would work effectively in my case.

Anyone else using a similar setup? Would appreciate any recommendations or insights!

Edit: Considering manual backup of Docker volumes (e.g; /var/lib/docker/volumes/nextcloud_aio_database/_data for DB). Is it sufficient for restoring the files/database? Will the containers use this data correctly?

Learned a hard lesson tonight. And that lesson is don't try to move your virtual server from one Proxmox node to another without first checking that the other node actually has enough storage space for the virtual disk. But hey, at least I got to test my Mastodon server's backup strategy. Also, how long does it take a server to re-pull 24 hours of content? :big_brain:

@heiseonline Wer ein #Backup auf eine fremde #Cloud macht, hat halt eine schlechte #Backupstrategy. Zumal wenn die #Backups #unencrypted/#unverschlüsselt sind. War schon immer so, wird immer so sein. Neu ist dieser Sachverhalt ja nicht.

"A backup is simultaneously both worthwhile and worthless till you have verified its integrity and restorability."
