My #Yunohost #VM has started responding super slowly and I'm seeing ATA cache flush failed messages in the syslog. I'm messing with the virtual sata disk caching settings and hoping for the best. Not sure why this started happening now...

The actual disks on the host have clean SMART reports and other VMs are working fine. My assumption without much specific info is that after some application update the RAM usage went up and so there's more disk thrashing going on.

Hmm, giving some consideration to switching over to #GoToSocial, and installing it bare metal on my VPS. At the moment this #Mastodon server runs via #Yunohost and the biggest pain in the ass is waiting weeks for them (Yunohost) to update the installers after a major Mastodon upgrade.

GTS appears to be a single binary, a database file and a YAML config file, running via one systemd service.

That's a lot less complex than Mastodon, with its multiple processes and connections.

Not to mention the resource usage.

After 10 months of operation, the database on this Masto instance fluctuates between 17Gb and 25Gb. Most of which is account data.

The same instance running under GTS as far as I can tell would be sitting at about 3gb at this point.

Memory and CPU usage would see similar reductions, which would be beneficial come renewal time and potential massive cost increases...

The main thing holding me back is the ability to use Quote Posts. I know it's coming in GTS, but there's no timescale AFAIK.

I know I originally had GTS installed prior to switching to Mastodon, but in hindsight I maybe should've stuck with GTS. I mean, Masto's been fine, but perhaps going lower resource would be better longer-term.

No rush to decide, as my vps is still 14 months from renewal, but definitely something to consider.

Since the original VPS didn't have enough disk space left to restore the backup, I moved the tar to a different VPS/Yunohost, did the restore there and ran a tootctl media usage on it.

Turns out that there were about 40 GB of attachments sometime during the last 2 days.

tootctl media remove to the rescue. New backup, re-transfer to the original server and Bob's your uncle.

Yesterday I wanted to update Mastodon on #Yunohost, which resulted in a 55 GB pre-upgrade backup file. The instance itself had only about 12 GB in total.

I guess I'll spend the next hour trying to figure out what happened there.

Vous utilisez quoi pour vos backups (chiffrés) distants ? J'ai un borgbackup qui tourne 4 fois par jour vers un Kimsufi à 5€ qui a 2 TB mais ça devient tendu niveau RAM/CPU pour mes autres usages (wallabag, nextcloud, etc...). Sauf qu'en dessous de 20€/mois j'ai l'impression que c'est compliqué d'avoir du stockage chez Kimsufi. Vous conseillez de séparer données et services chez 2 providers différents ? Installed #AdGuardHome on my #yunohost homelab. Was hoping my Fire Stick would use it as a DNS and then ads for streaming services would be block. I should have known streaming companies had their ways... well, back to the high seas I guess.

Mais bon, je vais certainement refaire l'expérience, en local uniquement dans un premier temps et voir comment mieux sécuriser le truc. Continuer d'avancer petit pas par petit pas.

Bref, le positif c'est que j'ai été plus loin que toutes les fois précédentes : mon serveur était en ligne et a fonctionné ! Et ça grâce à Yunohost et sa documentation claire et complète, grâce aussi à Nextcloud qui est une solution étonnamment simple à gérer malgré sa puissance.
Et aussi, même si c'est pas encore autohébergé, j'ai un serveur de streaming musical qui fonctionne.

Le négatif c'est que j'ai pas su gérer les attaques sur mon serveur et ça m'a fait flipper.

Les données sont sur l'ordi d'un autre, mais c'est plus facile et je me sens plus sécurisé.
J'avoue que voir toutes ces tentatives de connexion sur un matériel qui est à mon domicile ça m'a bien refroidi. Voir que c'était suffisant pour rendre le serveur inutilisable aussi. Même si visiblement aucune de ces connexions n'a abouti.

C'est peut être résolvable facilement quand on a l'habitude et mes craintes sont peut-être injustifiées, mais vu que je m'y connais pas du tout j'ai flippé que ça serve de porte d'entrée à des malveillants pour s'introduire sur mon réseau domestique.

Je suis resté quelques minutes à regarder mon écran sans bouger ni rien dire. Toute ma journée de repos passée à configurer le serveur, pour que finalement ça marche pas.

À la lecture du forum de Yunohost j'ai compris qu'il faudrait que j'investisse plus de temps et d'énergie dans du diagnostic, de la configuration, à me former comme quand j'ai débuté sous GNU/Linux.

Et… Bon j'ai laissé tomber pour le moment. Manque de temps, manque de motivation…

J'ai pris un hébergement Nextcloud chez Hetzner, chez qui j'ai aussi mes backups distants.

Je suis rentré de chercher les mômes, tout fier de moi, et je voulais reprendre la config, créer un compte Yunohost pour mon épouse…

Et patatras, le serveur fonctionne mal : je n'arrive plus à me connecter en SSH, l'interface de gestion rame…

Je consulte les logs et il y a plein de tentatives de connexion d'IP de plein de pays différents sur le port 22 (SSH). Pour pas me compliquer la vie j'avais laissé tous les ports par défaut en me disant que je changerai tout ça plus tard.

J'ai immédiatement mis en pause les redirections de ports de ma BBox et là j'ai pu me connecter en SSH depuis le réseau local.

Bref au bout de quelques heures j'avais configuré le serveur, il était accessible depuis les Internets, j'étais refait ! J'ai donc créé un compte « utilisateur » simple en plus du compte admin.

J'ai ensuite installé Nextcloud via la ligne de commande de la connexion SSH, l'interface graphique de Yunohost renvoyant une erreur à chaque tentative.
Puis configuration de Nextcloud et installation des app Nextcloud via le compte admin.

Enfin, synchronisation de mon dossier de musiques du PC vers le dossier partagé Multimédia de Yunohost (super concept).

Tout ceci fait, j'ai installé une application Android sur mon téléphone pour faire le streaming (Power Ampache 2) et fait un premier test : tout fonctionnait nickel !

Alors je suis parti chercher les enfants à l'école et chez la Nounou.

« Mais alors, c'est pas un échec en fait ! » Me direz-vous. Et vous auriez raison car jusque là tout allait bien et j'étais fier de moi.

La partie un peu plus ardue fut la configuration de ma BBox : j'ai pu faire les redirections de port uniquement en IPv4, mais j'ai pu débloquer le port 25 facilement juste pour l'IP de mon serveur.

Là encore la documentation de Yunohost était bien faite et l'interface de gestion du serveur très didactique pour analyser les problèmes et expliquer quoi faire.

J'ai à cette occasion découvert que Bouygues propose une IP fixe dans mon abonnement !

Serveur personnel à la maison épisode 3 sur ??? : 2e tentative, 2e échec !

Enfin, comme dirait l'autre, je ne dirais pas que c'est un échec, je dirais juste que ça n'a pas marché comme prévu.

J'avais une journée de repos prévue pour une tentative de faire un serveur de streaming musical avec Yunohost + Nextcloud. Très inspiré par @FLOZz que je remercie.

L'installation s'est passée nickel, j'ai à peu près tout compris comment faire grâce à la super documentation de Yunohost. Claire, précise. Le seul point délicat était le partitionnement (je voulais mettre le /home sur un disque dur séparé).

Was finally able to get my instance updated to the latest #glitch that is provided for by #yunohost

It did require some wrangling with disk space, though. Afterwards, I am seeing some possible issues with some media not showing up, but for the most part I think the media cache is okay.

I'm tempted to move this over to a separate host that I've got (nice little #kimsufi box I grabbed awhile ago) and swap over to #calkey but that's still up in the air.

@Shardiech In this moment I have four raspberry in my home: the first is a raspberry 1 with #transmission and openvpn server, one is a raspberry 2 with #pi_hole and the other are raspberry 4 with one with #yunohost and one with #kodi on #libreelec.
Yes, I have also a raspberry 3 but I don't know how to use it because #minecraft server for my sons does not work well on it! 😜
