I find it very strange that #Maya supports creation of and importing of a UsdPreviewSurface yet #Arnold simply renders it as pink. Yet Arnold via #Houdini as has no problem interpreting the UsdPreviewSurface. #Blender too has no issue with the UsdPreviewSurface.
Just to note I created the file I am importing into Maya, in Maya to start with. If you use a UsdPreviewSurface it renders pink, but if you use a 'StandardShader' (not aiSS) it converts to UsdPreview upon export.

My Teenage Years
Click here for more articles & daily dose.
Describe a phase in life that was difficult to say goodbye to.
Upon reading this prompt, I was reminded of my high school days. The first year of high school was very tough for me in terms of adjusting to a new school, cultures and subjects.
I went from a comfortable place to a different one without any guidance nor advice and I went from being a senior to a freshie all over again, which I did not like.
In addition to that, I had a very bad temper and used to talk back to my seniors which did not aid in my reputation. Well, that was the first year, things started getting better the following year onwards and my grades picked up. I have accustomed myself to the flow.
It was during my teenage years that I met my good friends whom I still keep contact to this day albeit not meeting much.
Looking back, I enjoyed my routine and studying very much. Waking up early was the hardest part of the day, which surprisingly isn’t one for me now, I have transitioned into an early riser.
This is followed by shower, preparing my breakfast and lunch for school, which mostly just includes me grabbing bread or biscuits and stuffing it in my bag and wait for my parents to send me off to school, which is usually my dad. He would send me off prior going to work.
I was truly blessed to have experience that.
In school, it was about attending classes, completing homework or assignments, gossiping with my friends or attending extra-curricular activities. However, the place I truly enjoyed spending my time was in the library. Thus, if I were to bunk class, I would lock myself inside the library and just study or read. The perks of being a librarian. Thankfully, my teacher-in-charge of the library always had my back if I were to be questioned regarding my whereabouts.
After school, my mother would be the one who usually picks me up from school and most of the time, we would eat outside. Occasionally, she does cook at home and as I am writing this reflection, I truly miss these simple heartwarming dishes.
This is then followed by me showering, completing my homework, studying, chilling, going out with my mom and getting ready for tuition or extra classes which are usually in the evenings or on alternate days.
Life was simple and predictable. I remembered attending multiple tuition classes during the week, mainly because I was bored being at home as I was not allowed to simply go out with my friends as I pleased. Thus, I looked forward to those evenings.
Holidays and weekends were the things I looked forward to as well and I enjoyed recuperating or simply helping my parents out with their chores, watching movies or TV shows, studying with music, writing and playing video games.
Surprisingly, what aid me in studying back in high school was due to video games. Perhaps it was the way I “destress” and it drives my mind.
I was not allowed to work during the holidays as my parents feared that once I get the taste of my own earnings, studying will no longer be a priority. However, my pocket money wasn’t great either. But I still got by and occasionally, my dad would slip in some money without my mom knowing just so I could enjoy a nice meal across the road with my friend.
The stress back then were focused on exams and completing homework. Occasionally, life dramas do get in the way, all part and parcel of being a “teenager”, having crushes, jealousy and bullying.
However, for the most part, I enjoyed my teenage years and looking back, I wouldn’t change a thing except to be more disciplined in my studying and to learn more.
Those years flew by rather quickly. Before I knew it, I was a senior and the stress of choosing a major or course and the university applications kicked in. Over the years, I’ve accumulated multiple fond memories with my friends as well which were a mixed of beautiful ones, silly and extremely foolish ones, which we do look back and laugh about during our meet-ups.
If you are reading this, I hope that you did enjoy your teenage years as much as I did too. If you are a teenager, do not fill your time with just studying, immerse yourself in extracurricular activities as well and discover new habits. It is the season of discovering yourself, and hopefully in years to come when you do look back and ponder, it will be filled with sweet memories as well.

World's democracies condemned the crackdown in Hong Kong, but did nothing to impose costs on the CCP dictatorship. Instead business (read: Chinese exports) only grew and grew. Gotta empower them despots! ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
Hong Kong's pro-democracy struggle presented an opportunity for democracies to stand up against dictatorship, but we failed miserably.
Giving the #CCP yet another free pass (after its repressive occupation of Tibet in 1950-1951 and the 1989 Tiananmen massacre) surely emboldened #putin to invade #Ukraine in 2022.
Repression of Tibetans, Uighurs, South-Mongolians, Hongkongers... or a billion+ voiceless Chinese brought no consequences, but at least the invasion of *European* Ukraine gave us Europeans a limited wakeup.
It's not enough. We could have aided developing democracies when the Soviet empire fell in 1989-1991 and *not aided* repressive regimes. Instead we doubled down on doing business without limits and empowered the likes of Chinese dictatorship.
There are things I love about Europe, and things I am deeply ashamed of. Talking about human rights while empowering despots belongs in the latter category.
Some foreign individuals did "Stand with Hong Kong" though. At least one here in Mastodon is, as always, still busy fighting authoritarian takeover. Now in her homeland of the USA.

2004 was productive, but hard.
Let's be honest; the past 20 years have been hard. But it amped up to 11 these past few months! But all I care about is being creative, curious, communicating and making as much art as I can, while I can!
This year, I shared my process, as a way to educate, as a way to cheer myself and other creatives on, and proof that my art is “generated” by ***ME***, not AI!
Here is a taste of my best work from 2024!

A question for my netowrk/sys admin friends. I want to create a nextcloud server on an old laptop at home. Since this sits behind my router, I am wondering how I can access it from the outside. I suppose this is a big chunk of a network admin's competence, so I am not aiming to be proficient at it by simply reading up. However, are there free resources that will help me accomplish what I want ? I want to be as safe as possible to external attacks.

Jörg Widmann: ‘Schubert sings because he can’t help it’
Clarinettist and composer Jörg Widmann (1973) cherishes tradition. His Octet for clarinet, horn, bassoon and string quintet is a tribute to Schubert’s piece of the same name. It will be performed by musicians of the Concertgebouw Orchestra in the small hall of the Amsterdam Concertgebouw on 10 November 2024.
Although he composed his Octet as a companion piece to Schubert’s work of the same name, it counts one less movement and lasts half as long. ‘This is purely out of respect,’ says Jörg Widmann. ‘I would never dare compare myself to him. Besides, I thought a structure of five movements and twenty-five minutes was just right. And although my piece is quite tonal, I did not aim for a stylistic copy either.’
Jörg Widmann (c) Marco BorggreveIndeed, the spirit of Schubert constantly shines through the notes, which nevertheless bear Widmann’s own unmistakable stamp. Starting with the opening chords. These are borrowed directly from Schubert’s Octet but immediately take a different, more dissonant and expressionistic direction. Widmann’s piece seems like a Schubert in overdrive.
Forever singing
‘I got to know his Octet relatively late, but was immediately impressed by its incessant singing,’ says the composer. ‘Take those endlessly long lines in the second movement, or the clarinet solo in his Eighth Symphony, the Unfinished. To perform those as a clarinettist was an existential experience.’
‘Schubert composed over 600 songs, I have always wondered why he sang all his life. I think this is for the same reason a small child whistles or sings in the forest. It is alone, it is afraid. It sings in order to reassure itself it is still there, it exists. To me, that is the essence of Schubertian singing. Adorno once said: “Before Schubert’s music, the tear falls from the eye without first questioning the soul.” That’s exactly the point. Schubert sings because he can’t help it!’
Compositional crisis
While working on the Octet, Widmann experienced a compositional crisis: ‘That was in 2003-4. I felt I could compose anything and everything, but failed to bring instruments to sing. It was a phase of severe self-criticism. I wanted to write about Schubert’s singing and threw myself maniacally into the Octet, and never stopped singing. Hopefully it sounds joyful indeed.’
Song-like it certainly is, but joyful? Rather, it is desperate and dark. The third movement in particular, ‘Lied ohne Worte’, has an incisive drama. Desolate melodic lines drift from horn to violin, from clarinet to bassoon and to the other strings. Anxiously swelling fortissimi and restrained whispers evoke a deep loneliness. Towards the end, we even seem to hear a plaintive human voice.
Vulnerable beauty
‘Exactly! That’s the double bass playing vertically on the comb, like a saw,’ exclaims Widmann. ‘This is the most important part. It is a sustained weeping, which is why I used so many ‘impure’ microtones. Ever since Monteverdi, a descending minor second has represented sadness, but to make it even sadder I reduced the interval even further. A crying person probably doesn’t sound so pure.’
Yet there are lighter passages too, he stresses. ‘At one point it gets louder and louder, it almost hurts your ears. Suddenly we hear major and minor chords, played in flageolets. These are basically pure and clean, like radiant angel voices, but they are very difficult to intone. I have factored in this impurity; it’s like looking at the world through tear-stained eyes, it’s all about a vulnerable beauty.’
This is followed by a short but fervent Intermezzo. Widmann: ‘This is for dramaturgical reasons. After the extremely desolate and personal middle section, you quasi light-heartedly say: well, and now on with it!’
Abyssal singing
The finale opens with the same chords as the first movement. From these nebulae of sound warble up themes of horn, bassoon and clarinet. Increasingly agitated, the musicians seem to be at each other’s throats. Just before the end, the horn howls like a dog in agony. After this, the string players furiously lash their instruments, ever wilder and wilder. Then the music stops abruptly.
‘Actually, it’s an anti-finale,’ Widmann says. ‘Like stumbling upon an abyss at full speed. In terror, your breath falters. For me, that is the essential characteristic of Schubert: there’s no more beautiful singing than abyssal singing. I regard my sudden silence as a big question mark: ‘Why, what for?’

Helloooo SFBA Fediverse!
I want SFBA.social to grow! :sfbasocial: I’ve been personally investigating ways for our instance to advertise to local users with the power of peer and on-foot advertising. I believe one of the best parts of our instance is that it is *local*. We are not aiming to be a mega instance, but offer the platform as a space for Bay Area residents to connect to the fediverse, and I want more of our neighbors to know about it.I have several questions for you, and I would love to hear any and all ideas you have for sharing SFBA.social (or any other regional instances) with our neighbors!

CW: "Democracy is not the highest goal... ...people are retarded."
"Government by the people, of the people, for the people... but the people are retarded."
"Democracy is not the highest goal..."
- famous #Osho quotes from Bondage to Freedom, Ch 31, Q 2 (excerpt)
https://www.oshonews.com/2021/09/09/government-by-the-people-of-merit/
+ my comments about Meritocracy after full quote below...
====================
WHOLE #QUOTE (SECTION)
====================" Democracy is not the highest goal. It is better than dictatorial regimes, it is better than monarchies, but it is not the end of the journey – because democracy basically means government by the people, of the people, for the people, but the people are retarded. So let us say: government by the retarded, for the retarded, of the retarded.
Democracy cannot be the highest possibility man can attain. It is good in comparison to other forms of government that have preceded it, but not something that can succeed it. I call that meritocracy. I want a government by the people of merit. And merit is a very rare quality."
=================
MY COMMENT ABOUT MERITOCRACY:
=================I take issue with the MERITOCRACY *IF* it's not aiming to educate people from ground up because again it's a power shift away from the average person like if good Marathon runners leave the pack and do their own thing - we need everyone together (at least as some point if someone runs ahead to do some work but it is almost best at the same time so the better marathon runners don't make big mistakes assuming what people want) which might all need a lot of education but that's the point ad hard work. Educating people and how / when.
Your users are the weakness on any system so only superior intellect IS NOT GOING TO WORK ON IT'S OWN.
If people want a simple life to live rural that should not be seen as unintellectual or lacking merit to pick and grow apples so I took offense in "merit" thinking that people can easily reject other by that using any "system" (system also isn't a great word as a mass template for assuming everyone is the same sometimes or not working WITH their individuality - anonymous / impersonal systems).

Saturday, June 8🌞1. Rearranged my bonsai forest for sun protection without falling on my face. Pomegranate tree seems to be surviving after criminal over-watering. 😖
2. I have nothing to do today except what I want to do.
3. Halibut & yams for dinner tonight.
4. Bonus: Digital (not AI) watercolor rendition of an African lion pic taken by vagabond son 11/2023. -
Added a 9-pin header right across the middle with pin labels. The socket mount points in these default DB-9 #Fritzing footprints aren't normally points I can attach wires to, but plonking a via in the middle of each and running a wire between those seems to produce the desired result (top right) - both in OSHPark's and JLCPCB's previews.
I know there's folks looking at this and cringing hard, but I'm not aiming for best practices here, just something that works okay for my purposes.

I reckon all competitions need one of these. Short, high-energy, setting a decent bar but not aiming to win... just made for the thrill of it.

:headache:
I cleared the application data, as was suggested in many places. It did not work. I also tried in Chrome. (I generally use Firefox.) It did not work.
(I'm not aiming to change email providers. People answering with "just move to [so-and-so]" will be blocked.)

There hasn't been much snow this winter so it was great to see some tobogganing for a few days. This girl was walking back up the hill after sliding almost down to the river! 😅

The weather has been wild the last few weeks. During the most recent cold snap, I captured this gentleman riding his bike across the frozen lake!
He's a braver man than me! 😅
