I want SFBA.social to grow! :sfbasocial: I’ve been personally investigating ways for our instance to advertise to local users with the power of peer and on-foot advertising. I believe one of the best parts of our instance is that it is *local*. We are not aiming to be a mega instance, but offer the platform as a space for Bay Area residents to connect to the fediverse, and I want more of our neighbors to know about it.I have several questions for you, and I would love to hear any and all ideas you have for sharing SFBA.social (or any other regional instances) with our neighbors!

📣 It's been a while since we've federated a batch of publishers — so to make up for it, here are 250, and they're big ones.

The Social Web Foundation launched today. This non-profit is dedicated to making connections between social platforms with ActivityPub, and was co-founded by @evan @mallory and @tomcoates.
The foundation's focus is educating the public and policy makers about the social web, enhancing and extending the ActivityPub protocol, and building tools and plumbing to make the social web easier to use. “With this program, The Social Web Foundation can catalyze more growth on the Fediverse while improving user experience and safety,” says Prodromou. “Our goal is to unblock users, developers and communities so they can get the most out of their social web experience.”

Local news matters, now more than ever. So a few weeks ago, we asked you for your thoughts on federating local papers in the USA — where you're located, and the specific publications you'd like to see. You responded, with ideas, suggestions, and an education on American geography. Now, we've federated 64 publications. Here's a blogpost with more details, plus a spreadsheet with a list of all the federated profiles, which include everyone from @AlaskaBeacon to @SunSentinel. If you spy a profile you like, search for it in the fediverse and you should see all its Magazines (topical feeds). Follow the profile to see everything in your feed, or just Magazines if you're only interested in, for example, South Florida Sports (@south-florida-sports-SunSentinel) or Texas Barbecue (@texas-bbq-TexasMonthly). In December, we started to federate the accounts of some Flipboard publishers and in February, we introduced Magazines to the fediverse. Now, we’re taking two important steps: federating the accounts of 400 creators and expert curators; and enabling two-way communication so that new followers and fediverse activity are visible and actionable in the Flipboard app.

Does anyone on #SFBA have experience writing opinion pieces for local news papers? The admin team is about to attempt a draft explaining SFBA and the fediverse to a local paper audience. Ideally, in a way it could be customized to each area of the bay! I’d love to invite our neighbors to join us here 🎉

I agree with @gruber. Not federating is certainly a choice admins can make, but it's unlikely to have an impact considering that Threads is being bootstrapped off the Instagram social graph.
Would you rather keep the fediverse restricted to its current population of ~8M people or scale it to ~2.35B+?

It looks interesting, but what does it do?
First thing the web site does is ask me to sign in to my Mastodon account.
Second thing is, my Mastodon instance asks me if I want to authorize SpreadMastodon.org for full access to my account.
No explanation of what is going to happen or what is intended.I'm not saying Yes if the website isn't even going to give me the courtesy of telling me what is intended, other than: "Do this! It'll be really cool!"

This is an excellent website to share to people who have joined Mastodon but haven't stuck around.
It's the user on-boarding that Mastodon should provide when you create your account. It would make sure new users' timeline isn't empty, but instead filled messages that are interesting to them.

Just wrote a DM reply where I described myself as grieving, and it's just hit me. I feel like I have bought into platform rhetoric that now feels empty. That I promoted people who've just turned out to be nicer™️, more liberal tinkerers, but now feel like white tech bros nonetheless.
There's a bunch of thoughtful female, queer, and multiracial admins that I follow that I just don't boost enough, probably because they don't blast most of their thoughts on the direction of the #Fediverse on public. They also don't over promote and under deliver, and seem to be more focused on safety.
I think more counsel from more folks like them could create a future #Fediverse I'd want to see.

At some point, Facebook and Twitter became the "coke and pepsi" of social, crowding out all others. #News sites and #journalists all *had* to be on Twitter. There should be an effort to #SpreadMastodon by getting news sites, journalists, and brands to simul-post content to #Mastodon. Costs them nothing, promotes competition and free market of ideas, gives #contentproducers greater control over their own messaging. #ifyoubuildittheywillcome
