My #introduction to #Linux.
I was blown away by the #Battlezone clone #bz on cool #SiliconGraphics machines (with HUGE monitors) at university. That was my first indication that there was a world out there beyond #DOS and #Windows.
One day, I bought #Caldera #OpenLinux 2.2 from #FutureShop. And I could play #BZFlag! It was amazing - but something didn't work. Maybe sound? I forget.
Years later, I tried #Mandrake 9.0. I used it solidly until I discovered #Ubuntu. The rest is history.

@lproven @theregister #FLTK helped me a lot to get what I am now. I used it (version 1.0.7) back in the year 2000, shortly after CUPS 1.0 came out, for my very first, own free software project, the X Printing Panel, a simple GUI print dialog, giving access to all pipes and whistles of the printers. With this I got invited to the big Linux show LinuxTag and there I got invited to work at MandrakeSoft in Paris ... I ended up leading #OpenPrinting ...

Long way back started out on #NetBSD but of course that's the odd one out here :P

@gael You started early, in i386 times, Linux' first architecture. When I started in 1997 with SUSE 5.1 we had mostly Pentium and some i486, 8MB and 16MB RAM, FVWM, built KDE 1.0 first time in 1998 (?) (on SGI IRIX), installed Mandrake Linux for the first time on my first laptop mid-1999, and on my wife's PC in April 2000, got invited to work at MandrakeSoft to switch the distro to CUPS min-2000.
So you did an important step to what I am now. Thanks!

J'ai essayé pendant un temps #MandrakeLinux puis #Mandriva, mais jamais #MageiaJe ne nierai pas ma préférence tout de même pour #Ubuntu (pas seulement parce que ça a été ma première distro à 100% et sans dual-boot) ou dérivée.
Certes, elle n'est ni Française ni Européenne, mais d'une part elle a un cycle de vie que je trouve à la fois clair (2 maj majeures/an en avril et octobre) et pertinente (LTS tous les 2 ans) ; et d'autre part #Canonical propose un support professionnel à celui qui le souhaite.
