lol I had a 3dfx card before nvidia ever *made* a gpu. I believe Voodoo cards were the first 3D graphics accelerators as we think of them today, at least for PCs[1].

I seem to recall that *maybe* nvidia coined the term GPU? I know they weren’t called that at the start.

Another day, another 30 year old computer getting in on the IPv6 action. This time it's an SGI O2 running IRIX 6.5.

It only took me a few hours to setup a network installation server for the software and remember how to use inst and find the right systune but hey, now we're golden. :sgi:​

(Install eoe.sw.ipv6, reboot, systune ip6_enable 1, reboot)

I only got to wear one once, at Epcot Center. I got the chance to explore some Egyptian tomb and it got me hooked on VR ever since.

And now I wonder how hard it could be to patch a 68K silicon graphics IRIS 3000 to run classic mac os. I doubt I'll have time in my lifetime to look into that, but still making QuickDraw work with a bitplane graphic adapter would be interesting…

@lauren @PeterLudemann @not2b I used to joke about how without fail every other generation (Challenge-Origin server and Indigo-O2 desktop era) of Silicon Graphics machines - the power supplies would either just die (no blinking lights) or catch on fire (literal flames shooting out). #sgi #silicongraphics A smart software engineer whose deskside machine caught on fire in his office calmly rolled it outside, removed the disks to save their work, THEN used an extinguisher on it.

I have a Silicon Graphics (Norwegian) PS/2-keyboard, a PS/2 mouse (with ball), a Silicon Graphics Camera and a SGI O2 Workstation Quickstart guide. They are all headed for recycling. BUT, if someone wants the lot I can probably make the effort to ship it for the cost of postage and packaging from Norway to whereever you are.

I'll store it until the end of august.
