  1. Farmworkers Heal Climate-Scarred Land With #NativeSeeds

At #California’s #HedgerowFarms, specialists produce seeds to #revegetate burned areas, reestablish #wetlands, and transform drought-prone #farmland

    By Caleb Hampton

    July 7, 2025

"Quiroz and Gómez are seed-cleaning specialists and field workers at Hedgerow Farms, a native seed farm near the #CentralValley town of #WintersCA. Hedgerow’s collectors gather seeds from native plants in the wild, and field workers grow them out at the 300-acre farm to produce more seeds. This spring, neat rows of #mugwort, #PurpleNeedlegrass, and #CaliforniaPoppies sprouted in the midst of neighboring almond orchards, tomatoes, and alfalfa.

"Government agencies, tribes, and other land managers use the seeds to revegetate #FireRavagedAreas, transform #AbandonedFarmland, reestablish wetlands, and repair other damaged or altered lands, creating environments that support local #ecosystems and #biodiversity.

" 'We’re doing something for the planet,' Quiroz said in Spanish.

"Recreational areas have benefited too: Hedgerow Farms’ #SilverbushLupine grows in the Golden Gate National Recreation Area, and its #NativeGrasses can be found in the Yolo Bypass Wildlife Area outside Sacramento. The farm also supplies native seeds to seed packet retailers, helping sow #DroughtResistant plants and establish #pollinator habitat in #urban environments.

"Some projects, such as the ongoing restoration of the #KlamathRiverBasin in Oregon and California, involve billions of seeds — from various suppliers, including Hedgerow — spread across thousands of acres. 'Native vegetation is the foundation of a healthy #ecosystem,' the #YurokTribe said in a social media post showing #wildflowers blooming this spring in the scar of a former reservoir.

"After four dams were removed from the #KlamathRiver, the tribe began #revegetating the riverbanks last year, planting species such as #milkweed — a key food source for #MonarchButterflies — that once flourished in the watershed."

  6. Another photo update of the mugwort patch at my community garden, now several weeks after it was plowed. It's Exhibit A for why one should never, ever till mugwort. I've tried to explain this to the person in charge but she just doesn't care. #allotment #garden #gardening #weed #tilling #plowing #mugwort #artemisia

  11. Here's the horror show at my community garden that I described several days ago. The "tilled" section has been plowed and looks weed free and inviting. But in reality the lawn of common mugwort that was previously there has just been broken up into thousands of little clumps, soon to reestablish in areas of the garden that previously didn't have it. And then, just like in past years, gardeners will abandon their plots because the weeds are too thick and the vegetables can't compete. #allotment #garden #gardening #weed #nodig #tilling #plowing #mugwort

  14. To rid your garden of common mugwort you have to dig it up and remove the long rhizomes from every clump. It took me two years of hard work to eliminate it. Now other gardeners say, "Oh, you're so lucky that your plot doesn't have that weed." #garden #gardening #weeds #mugwort #allotment

  16. At my community garden one can choose to be on the tilled side or the non-tilled side. I chose the latter because I can use it year-round (e.g., I sow peas and fava beans in February). But the photos below provide the other big reason: common mugwort (Artemisia vulgaris). When you have a lawn of this, the very last thing you want to do is plow — every single one of the thousands of rhizome segments will survive and thrive. But that is exactly what will happen this week. I watch in horror every year. #garden #allotment #mugwort #weed #nodig

  34. As it got closer to sunset on the #SummerSolstice, I went out into the backyard to harvest the #Mugwort aka Artemesia vulgaris.

This is used for divination, and people can burn it as incense (outdoors recommended) or brewed as tea. Also, to polish crystal balls to recharge them.

Also if anybody wants a kombucha #scoby / mother hmu!
