Today I came across a weird #printer problem. From #Debian #Linux I could print to the #Canon PIXMA printer in simplex or #duplex.
BUT, in duplex mode it would print a side, eject the paper, re-load the paper, then eject it again without printing anything on it, and then start the second page on a separate sheet of paper.
This happened from my PC and a separate one using the stock #IPP driver in #CUPS
Annoyingly it works perfectly in Windows...

Isso tudo me lembra quando eu participava no FISL, não me lembro exatamente, pode ser em 2003 e 2004, e eu dei tutoriais sobre CUPS em Português, com a sala superlotada, pessoal assistindo em pé, os organizadores me daram 3 PCs (cada um com monitor CRT) e 2 impressoras para demonstrações de impressão em rede ...
Em um destes 2 anos tinha também Jon Maddog Hall lá ...
E tinha churrascos deliciosos ...

More details:
- The printer is a Brother HL-L5100DN series.
- I did the configuration of the "Location" in the printer's Web UI (not in CUPS).
- The #LinuxMint printer app only responded with "server-error-internal-error"
- But in the CUPS Web UI I got a proper error message regarding the umlaut.So the error might very well be in the Brother software, not in CUPS.
To be on the safe side, I still reported the bug to the CUPS team:

My new printer stopped working under #LinuxMint the other day. Re-adding it resulted in a general error message.
Finally found the solution:
In the printer's "location" field, I had specified "Mein Büro" ("My office" in German). And Cups does not like umlauts in that field. 😶
After removing the "ü", the printer worked.
Maybe this information will be helpful to someone, at some point. 🙂

So about the #Kyocera #CUPS driver needing insecure #pypdf3 situation:
I guess this is not only a #NixOS problem but concerns anyone wanting to use their Kyocera printer on Linux. I understand that pypdf3 is deprecated and one should use just pypdf, but the kyocera driver is proprietary, so how would one fix that? 🤔
I guess Kyocera themselves don't care whatsoever...

O kurde, to faktycznie działa. Mam starą drukarkę Brother z #CUPS na #orangepizero2 i już też miałem ją wpiętą do @homeassistant więc konfiguracja integracji była prosta. No i teraz mogę drukować jakieś rzeczy niczym jak faks. Tylko nie wiem jeszcze do czego się może przydać...

Got smol SSD drive (250GB) and restarted #LinuxMint experiment (old #desktop was laggy using spinning rust) - this is actually now a usable PC!
Office #printer once again detected by #CUPS with driverless install, built in software handled printing a large graphics-intensive PDF well.
Both #Firefox and #Edge running without problems (only reason I have Edge on here is to test how well it works with if #MS365)
Only minor drawback is #Dropbox #Linux client wants to download entire Dropbox to the hard drive (which will fill it up very quickly), it doesn't have the "save hard drive space" functionality on #Windows
This would now be good enough to use as backup PC for general (non technical) office staff (many use web MS365 apps a lot more than desktop these days!)

Den Netzwerkdrucker von Brother über das Wlan einzubinden hat Mint mit Fehlermeldung, wohl von Cups, verweigert.
Geholfen hat die Installation der von Brother auf der Supportseite als deb-Paket zur Verfügung gestellten Treiber.Nun funktioniert der Drucker, und die Frau ist glücklich.

Why doesn't merch that includes mugs ever* include large ones, 16-18 ounces, or more?
I would buy more mugs, but 8-12 oz ain't worth my money and the extra clutter. I'm full up on those sizes.
14 ounces isn't very compelling and would require an awesome design or other factor to get my money.
Just take note, merch sellers. We large mug users do exist.
The large 18-24 oz to-go cup is ubiquitous, not at all rare, so large mugs should be more common.

I have originally reported this one. See the answers of CUPS author Michael Sweet. He has developed primarily under Mac OS (BSD-based) which uses mdnsresponder (Not Avahi as in Linux) where the problem does not occur, seems in CUPS' Avahi support.
Set as milestone for first CUPS 2.5.x release.

A security update to CUPS broke printing in Linux Mint 21.3 in 2025, AKA the year of the Linux desktop. Yargh !
This is the first time that I've ever actually restored a Timeshift backup, and the sonofabitch just worked. Held back the CUPS update in Update Manager and boom, problem solved (for now).

You know what I love most about #CUPS?
The fact that it will just spontaneously break from time to time, without any changes being made, and requiring much jiggery-pokery, cursing, repeatedly deleting and recreating printer entries, cursing some more, sacrificing a black goat at midnight under a full moon, etc before it will work again.
Literally just happened to me, again, between 2 print jobs, less than a minute apart. Changed absolutely nothing, but the second one failed and the printer (in CUPS, not the actual printer itself) went into an unrecoverable state.
FFS.

@martinsteiger @rapha3l No drivers at all! The operating systems just support the driverless #IPP standards, without explicit support of these printer models.
The printers are certified to fulfill the AirPrint, Mopria, and/or IPP Everywhere standards by being run through test programs, and therefore they are in the list.

Substitua "Brother" por como quer chamar sua impressora. É o nome que você vai selecionar quando for imprimir algo.
Substitua "AAA.BBB.CCC.DDD" pelo IP da sua impressora. Depois disso, não mude nada no comando acima.
E como esse setup usa o driver genérico do protocolo IPP, dispensa drivers proprietários e bloatware da fabricante.

If you package the standard printing stack of OpenPrinting: #CUPS, #cups-filters, #Ghostscript, ... Void Linux will be good for all modern printers.
